Recent Advances in Plant-Based Edible Emulsion Gels for 3D-Printed Foods.

3D printing has emerged as a suitable technology for creating foodstuff with functional, sensorial, and nutritional attributes. There is growing interest in creating plant-based foods as alternatives to address current demands, especially to tailor consumer preferences. Consequently, plant-derived edible inks for additive manufacturing have emerged as suitable options, including emulsion gels (or emulgels). These gels can be formulated entirely from plant-derived lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, and/or other ingredients to form complex fluids that belong to the category of soft matter. This

Chronotype, cognitive outcomes, and neural dynamics: recent evidence and potential mechanisms with implications for perioperative period.

Circadian rhythm plays a fundamental role in regulating biological functions, including sleep-wake preferences, body temperature, hormone secretion, food intake, cognitive function and physical performance. The sleep chronotype, as part of the circadian rhythm, usually refers to an individual's subjective preference for their own sleep-wake cycle. Because of the differences in brain microstructure and resting-state connections between different sleep chronotype, it may lead to differences in individual cognitive function. Concurrently, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the associati

Differentiating aspects of oral and long-acting injectable antipsychotic drugs for tailoring the therapy of schizophrenia in clinical practice: a narrative review.

Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric condition requiring continuous treatment with antipsychotic medications available in different formulations, including oral antipsychotics (OAPs) and long-acting injectables (LAIs). This narrative review aims to comprehensively outline the advantages and disadvantages of OAPs and LAIs to support clinicians in choosing different formulations based on the presentation of clinical symptoms. An electronic search of the PubMed database was performed in June 2024, and additional articles were retrieved from the references or personal knowledge of the authors. R

Bite force transmission and mandible shape in grasshoppers, crickets, and allies is not driven by dietary niches.

Although species evolve in response to many intrinsic and extrinsic factors, frequently one factor has a dominating influence on a given organ system. In this context, mouthpart shape and function are thought to correlate strongly with dietary niche and this was advocated for decades, e.g., for insects. Orthoptera (grasshoppers, crickets, and allies) are a prominent case in this respect because mandible shape has been even used to predict feeding preferences. Here, we analyzed mandible shape, force transmission efficiency, and their potential correlation with dietary categories in a phylogenet

Nutrition and Lifestyle-Related Factors as Predictors of Muscle Atrophy in Hematological Cancer Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and side effects from cytostatic treatment commonly affect nutritional status manifested as a decrease in muscle mass. We aimed to investigate the impact of nutrition and lifestyle-related factors on muscle mass in patients with hematological cancer. METHODS: Dietary intake, food preferences, quality of life (QoL), and physical activity level (PAL) were monitored during 1-2 cytostatic treatment series. Body composition was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). RESULTS: 61 patients were included. Weight loss and loss of muscle mass were detected in 64% and…

Insomnia Management: A Review and Update.

Insomnia is a distinct disorder that is common, yet underrecognized and undertreated in primary care. Treating insomnia has been shown to improve outcomes, including reduced risk of developing cardiovascular and mental health disorders. Insomnia is influenced by the brain's regulation of sleep and wake, which are mutually exclusive events. Insomnia should be treated as a distinct condition, even when occurring with a comorbid diagnosis such as depression or anxiety. Clinicians should implement a multimodal approach to insomnia management, including nonpharmacologic interventions and pharmacolo

A role for taste receptors in (neuro)endocrinology?

The sense of taste is positioned at the forefront when it comes to the interaction of our body with foodborne chemicals. However, the role of our taste system, and in particular its associated taste receptors, is not limited to driving food preferences leading to ingestion or rejection before other organs take over responsibility for nutrient digestion, absorption and metabolic regulation. Taste sensory elements do much more. On the one hand, extra-oral taste receptors from the brain to the gut continue to sense nutrients and noxious substances after ingestion and, on the other hand, the nutri…

Reprint of "An overview of freshwater snails in Asia with main focus on Vietnam".

Freshwater snails have received much attention for their role as intermediate hosts for trematodes causing disease in people and animals such as schistosomiasis and various food-borne trematodes. While effective medical treatment exists for some of these diseases there is need for preventive measures to reduce transmission, e.g. control of intermediate hosts because transmission patterns are often complicated due to presence of reservoir final hosts. In order to implement control measures against the intermediate host snails with minimal impact on the freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversi

Can we cut out the meat of the dish? Constructing consumer-oriented pathways towards meat substitution.

The shift towards a more sustainable diet necessitates less reliance on foods of animal origin. This study presents data from a representative survey of Dutch consumers on their practices related to meat, meat substitution and meat reduction. The practices reflected a cultural gradient of meat substitution options running from other products of animal origin and conventional meat free meals to real vegetarian meals. To investigate feasible substitution options, a variety of meals without meat were presented using photos, which were rated by the participants in terms of attractiveness and chanc

Aligning private incentives with societal goals in smallholder agriculture.

Small-scale farmers in low-income countries are often encouraged to adopt new inputs and practices that generate significant societal benefits, such as improved nutrition, food safety, and environmental sustainability. The limited observability of these attributes, combined with small production scale and misaligned private incentives, leads to adoption levels below the social optimum. Addressing this issue often requires combining instruments identified by different scientific disciplines, spanning across multiple policy sectors, an exercise that is rarely articulated jointly. This paper aims

Diet in Ulcerative Colitis: A Narrative Review of Its Role in Pathogenesis and Treatment.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease influenced by genetic, immune, microbial, and environmental factors, with diet emerging as a key modifiable element. This narrative review examines how specific macronutrients, food additives, and dietary patterns affect UC pathogenesis, symptom control, and clinical outcomes. High intake of saturated fats, red and processed meats, and ultra-processed foods promotes dysbiosis and mucosal inflammation, while diets rich in fiber, resistant starches, and omega-3 fatty acids support gut barrier integrity and exert anti-inflammatory ef

[A child s first 1,000 days: its relevance to the oral care practice].

Every human life begins as a single, fertilized egg-cell. During the first 1,000 days of life, this cell develops into a 2-year-old toddler. More milestones are reached in this period of life than in any other. All organs are formed, the metabolism is set up, the microbiome is formed, the child learns to eat and drink, develops eating habits, food preferences, and learns to walk and talk. The environment in which these developments take place is crucial to health in later life. The established structures and systems will last for life and will thus have a life-long influence on the individual …

Patient and carer experiences of cancer cachexia and its management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To explore the contributions of recent qualitative literature in progressing understanding of the experiences of cancer cachexia, and its management, from the perspectives of patients and unpaid/family carers. RECENT FINDINGS: Challenges with conducting everyday activities, maintaining independence, and continuing usual roles within the family are sources of distress. Patients and carers value individualization, flexibility, and carer involvement in physical activity/exercise interventions. In psychosocial/educational interventions that were positively perceived, the opport

Development and Quality Characteristics of Jangjorim Prepared Using Long-Arm Octopus (Octopus minor) as an Elderly-Friendly Food.

We prepared a long-arm octopus Jangjorim prototype (LOJP) by optimizing the ratio of ingredients for seasoning and establishing heat sterilization parameters. The optimal amounts of purified water (2.9-56.6%, A), starch syrup (0.3-37.8%, B), and soy sauce (25.5-71.5%, C) for the production of seasoning soy sauce were obtained using response surface analysis. The LOJP was prepared by combining A, B, and C under the optimal conditions and evaluated for consumer preferences and physicochemical, nutritional, and microbiological properties and compared with Korea's legal management standards for ge

Dietary Sodium Restriction for Heart Failure: A Systematic Review of Intervention Outcomes and Behavioral Determinants.

The 1500 mg/d dietary sodium restriction commonly recommended for patients with heart failure has recently been questioned. Poor adherence to sodium-restricted diets makes assessing the efficacy of sodium restriction challenging. Therefore, successful behavioral interventions are needed. We reviewed sodium restriction trials and descriptive studies of sodium restriction to: 1) determine if sodium restriction was achieved in interventions among heart failure patients; and 2) characterize predictors of successful dietary sodium restriction. Among 638 identified studies, 10 intervention trials, a

Acceptability of 12 fortified balanced energy protein supplements - Insights from Burkina Faso.

Poor maternal nutrition contributes to poor birth outcomes, including low birth weight and small for gestational age births. Fortified balanced energy protein (BEP) supplements may be beneficial, although evidence is limited. This mixed method study, conducted among pregnant women in Burkina Faso, is part of a larger clinical trial that seeks to understand the impact of fortified BEP supplements on pregnancy outcomes and child growth. The formative research reported here, a single-meal rapid assessment of 12 product formulations, sought to understand product preferences for provision of BEP su

Rat-atouille: A Mixed Method Study to Characterize Rodent Hunting and Consumption in the Context of Lassa Fever.

Lassa fever is a zoonotic hemorrhagic illness predominant in areas across Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, and southern Mali. The reservoir of Lassa virus is the multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis), a highly commensal species in West Africa. Primary transmission to humans occurs through direct or indirect contact with rodent body fluids such as urine, feces, saliva, or blood. Our research draws together qualitative and quantitative methods to provide a fuller and more nuanced perspective on these varied points of human-animal contact. In this article, we focus on the hunting, prepa

Ethanol polydipsic choice: effects of alternative fluid polydipsic history.

Two groups of rats drinking either 5% ethanol or 0.9% NaCl solution under a fixed-time 1-min schedule of food pellet delivery became polydipsic during daily 3-hr sessions. When both fluids were made available to animals during sessions, strong side preferences typically developed so that neither fluid was preferred in spite of the fact that one group had a mild-to-moderate physical dependence on ethanol. The group that drank 0.9% NaCl solution initially failed to acquire a strong 5% ethanol polydipsia when this became the sole available fluid, and special procedures were required to induce an
