Heat stress in cereal crops: reproductive development and grain filling.

Increasingly frequent extreme heat events threaten cereal production and food security under a changing climate. The reproductive-to-grain formation continuum of cereals is particularly vulnerable to elevated temperatures, as heat stress disrupts developmental processes from inflorescence formation and fertilization to grain filling and quality establishment. These disruptions reduce reproductive success, impair yield formation, and compromise grain quality. A comprehensive understanding of the developmental, physiological, molecular, and genetic basis of cereal heat tolerance is therefore ess…

Plant halotropism: mechanisms, signaling networks, and adaptive significance.

Soil salinization is one of the most pressing abiotic stresses currently confronting global agriculture, posing a severe threat to crop yields and global food security. As soil salinity is not uniform, plant roots actively adjust their direction of growth to evade high-salinity regions; a phenomenon called halotropism. The core molecular mechanism underlying this process relies on the asymmetric redistribution of auxin. This paper systematically reviews the current knowledge of the physiological and molecular mechanisms regulating root halotropism, compares the divergent halotropic strategies …

Global patterns in plant-pollinator specialization.

Pollination is a key ecological process sustaining biodiversity and food security, yet global patterns of plant-pollinator specialization remain unresolved. Using a global dataset of quantitative plant-pollinator networks (>3,400 networks, >110,000 interactions), we show that specialization is latitudinally structured, but not as a single directional pattern. We find no consistent monotonic increase or decrease in specialization towards the Equator. Instead, network-level and pollinator specialization peak at low northern latitudes near the tropical-subtropical boundary, whereas plant speciali…

Coordinated regulation of amino acid metabolism and transport in cereal nitrogen remobilization for grain filling.

Improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in cereals is crucial for sustainable agriculture and global food security. Nitrogen remobilization from senescing leaves to developing grains can contribute up to 80% of grain nitrogen content in cereals, though this varies with genotype and environment, making it a critical determinant of both yield and protein quality. This review synthesizes current evidence to highlight that remobilization efficiency emerges not from isolated processes but from the precise coordination between source leaves and sink grains. Specifically, we discuss how efficient nit…

Comparative Transcriptomics Reveals Constitutive Immunity and Divergent Defence Strategies in Wheat against Leaf Rust.

Wheat leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina, poses a continuous threat to global food security. To dissect durable resistance mechanisms, we compared early infection responses between the near-immune cultivar 'Yunmai 34' (YM) and the susceptible 'Chinese Spring' (CS). While CS exhibited massive transcriptional reprogramming upon infection, YM displayed a relatively narrow scale-changes yet could arrested the pathogen prior to haustorium formation. This resistance might be associated with a constitutive immune state, evidenced by elevated basal expression of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes an…

Revolutionizing Soil Bioremediation: Nanobubble-Driven Enhancement of Microbial Dynamics and Rhizosphere Resilience.

Soil pollution from urbanization, agriculture, and industry, compounded by climate change, poses severe threats to soil health and food security. Traditional physical, chemical, and biological remediation approaches are often resource-intensive and risk secondary contamination. This narrative review critically synthesizes mechanistic insights into nanobubble (NB) technology, its interactions with soil microbial communities, and their applications in enhancing bioremediation of contaminated and saline soils. NBs (<1 µm improve the gas transfer, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), and facili…

Successive nitric oxide and lipoic acid priming mitigates [ZnO]NPs toxicity in wheat: experimental and DFT insights.

The global food security is threatened by the accumulation of anthropogenic nanomaterials in the environment. We investigated the phytotoxic effects of elevated zinc oxide nanoparticles ([ZnO]NPs: 300-400 mg L⁻1) on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and evaluated a novel detoxification strategy using successive redox-priming. Wheat caryopses were primed with alpha-lipoic acid (LA) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a nitric oxide donor) either individually or in successive sequences (LA→SNP and SNP→LA). Exposure to [ZnO]NPs resulted in significant growth inhibition, reduction of biomass and degradation…

Gut Microbiome of Aquatic Organisms: Role in Immunity Formation and Effects on Aquaculture Productivity.

Aquaculture is central to global food security, but intensification of production has increased disease risk and environmental pressure. The gut microbiome of aquatic organisms is now recognized as a key mediator of host physiology, nutrition, immunity, and pathogen resistance, making it a promising alternative to antimicrobial-based disease control. This review summarizes current knowledge on the composition, assembly, and functional roles of the gut microbiome in fish and crustaceans of aquacultural importance. Major bacterial phyla include Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Fusobact…

Pseudomonadaceae Promotes Tobacco Defense Against Pathogen Invasion via Root Exudate Reprogramming.

Microbial pathogens pose a serious challenge to food security under climate change. Microbiomes can filter out incoming pathogens. However, the specific microbial taxa and mechanisms that indicate the response of the microbiome and plant health to the invasion of pathogens remain largely unknown. Here, we combine multiple field surveys and experiments with DNA and RNA sequencing using tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and the bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum as the model system, and f ind that Pseudomonadaceae constitute an important root-associated component against pathogen invasions…

A Framework for Antimicrobial Resistance Risk Assessment, Monitoring, and Risk-Reduction Practices along the Reused Water-Soil-Crop-Human Continuum.

Food security in many parts of the world is threatened by reduced water availability, resulting from population growth and climate change. Under these circumstances, irrigating crops with reclaimed water is becoming an increasingly important agricultural practice. A framework is proposed to address these concerns, evaluate how effectively current regulations ensure safe and sustainable water reuse in the context of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and identify opportunities for more targeted guidance. The paper proposes indicators for water quality assessment that take into account risks specif…

Bacterial biomineralization-engineered Ag-Pt nanozyme for label-free and sensitive colorimetric detection of enrofloxacin in aquatic products.

The overuse of enrofloxacin (ENR) in aquaculture poses significant threats to ecological security and food safety, generating an urgent demand for instrument-free on-site detection. Herein, a Listeria-templated Ag-Pt bimetallic nanozyme (Listeria-Ag@Pt) was fabricated via a bacteria-templated in situ mineralization strategy. The intact bacterial template not only prevents nanoparticle aggregation to maximize peroxidase-like activity but also imparts inherent molecular recognition capability toward ENR without requiring antibodies or aptamers. The presence of ENR can enhance the catalytic effic

Characterization of the Genital Microbiota in Portuguese Native Goats.

Evaluating the reproductive microbiome in small ruminant livestock, such as goats and sheep, is crucial for improving breeding performance, promoting animal health, and optimizing pregnancy outcomes. A healthy microbiome in the reproductive tract inhibits infections, regulates immune activity, and reduces the risk of microbial imbalances that negatively affect pregnancy. Understanding this microbiome also supports better disease control, informs advanced animal husbandry practices for goats and sheep, and contributes to global food security. This study aimed to characterize the genital microbi…
