Time-loss and recurrence of lateral ligament ankle sprains in male elite football: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

A literature search was conducted to systematically review and meta-analyze time-loss and recurrence rate of lateral ankle sprains (LAS) in male professional football players. Six electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDRO, CINAHL, and Cochrane) were searched independently, separately both for time-loss and recurrence from inception until April 30, 2021. In addition, reference lists were screened manually to find additional literature. Cohort studies, case reports, case-control studies and RCT in English language of male professional football players (aged more than 16 years) …

An evaluation of the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and bone turnover markers in professional football players and in physically inactive men.

Vitamin D is synthesised in the skin during exposure to sunlight and its fundamental roles are the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism and bone mineralisation. The aim of our study was to evaluate serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, PTH and bone turnover markers (P1NP, OC, beta-CTx, OC/beta-CTx) and the intake of calcium and vitamin D in Polish Professional Football League (Ekstraklasa) players and in young men with a low level of physical activity. Fifty healthy men aged 19 to 34 years were included in the study. We showed that 25(OH)D3 and P1NP levels and OC/beta-CTx were higher…

Simultaneous metacarpophalangeal joint ulnar collateral ligament injury and carpometacarpal dislocation of the thumb in a football player: a case report.

An unusual case of ulnar collateral ligament avulsion in association with carpometacarpal dislocation of thumb is described. Symptoms and deformity caused by dislocation can mask the presence of injuries such as damage to the ulnar collateral ligament of thumb. This may lead to long term disability. A high index of suspicion and good clinical examination allows correct diagnosis and management of these uncommon injuries leading to a good clinical outcome.

Injuries in Swedish elite football--a prospective study on injury definitions, risk for injury and injury pattern during 2001.

The purpose of this study was to study the risk for injury and injury pattern in Swedish male elite football and to compare two different injury definitions. A prospective cohort study was conducted during 2001 on all 14 teams (310 players) in the Swedish top division. Injuries and individual exposure were recorded. Injury was defined as time-lost injury (715 injuries) and for comparison as tissue injury (765 injuries). No significant difference in the risk for injury between tissue injuries and time-lost injuries was found during matches (27.2 vs. 25.9 injuries per 1000 match hours, P=0.66) o…
