Multimodal neuroimaging investigations of alterations to consciousness: the relationship between absence epilepsy and sleep.

The link between epilepsy and sleep is well established on many levels. The focus of the current review is on recent neuroimaging investigations into the alterations of consciousness that are observed during absence seizures and the descent into sleep. Functional neuroimaging provides simultaneous cortical and subcortical recording of activity throughout the brain, allowing a detailed definition and characterization of large-scale brain networks and the interactions between them. This has led to the identification of a set of regions which collectively form the consciousness system, which incl…

Neuroimaging for prognosis of central nervous system infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) infections carry a severe prognosis and often require intensive care unit (ICU) admission. This study evaluated the prognostic value of neuroimaging in patients with all-type CNS infections. METHODS: Using a predefined strategy, we first conducted a systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, PubMed Central, Embase, Cochrane and Google Scholar. Eligible studies published between January 1st, 2000, and June 1st, 2023, were included. We considered randomized controlled trials, non-randomized trials, cohort studies, excluding abstracts, cost-effectiveness analys

Cingulate role in Tourette syndrome.

This chapter comprehensively reviews the published record for neurosurgical, neurostimulatory, and neuroimaging evidence of the involvement of the cingulate gyrus in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS). The most noteworthy evidence comes from neuroimaging. Neuroimaging findings were rarely exclusive to the cingulate cortex and tended to implicate multiple other cortices as well. Some results are reflective of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms of TS. Copious findings, however, drawn from structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), magnetic resonance spectroscop

[Functional assessment of internal carotid artery tortuosity in patients with multifocal atherosclerosis].

The review is devoted to diagnosis and treatment of internal carotid artery tortuosity. The authors consider modern classification, epidemiology and diagnostic options using neuroimaging or ultrasound-assisted functional stress tests depending on medical history and complaints. In addition to standard Doppler ultrasound, rotational and orthostatic tests are advisable due to possible changes of local shape and hemodynamic parameters following body position changes, especially in patients with concomitant atherosclerotic stenosis. Thus, a personalized approach is especially important for treatme

The network localization and underlying biological basis of heterogeneous structural and functional brain abnormalities in insomnia disorder.

Insomnia disorder (ID) has become a prevalent sleep disorder worldwide, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear due to heterogeneous neuroimaging findings and uncertain network localization. We identified brain structural and functional abnormality locations associated with ID from 63 published neuroimaging studies, including 3391 patients and 3433 healthy controls. Using coordinate network mapping combined with a normative connectome database, we mapped these abnormalities to large-scale brain networks of ID across imaging modalities and further decoded them by integrating microsc

Machine Learning-Based Identification of Functional Dysregulation Characteristics in Core Brain Networks of Adolescents with Bipolar Disorder Using Task-fMRI.

Background and Objective: Adolescent bipolar disorder (BD) has substantial symptom overlaps with other psychiatric disorders. Identifying its distinctive candidate neuroimaging markers may be helpful for exploratory early differentiation and to inform future translational studies after independent validation. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled adolescents with BD and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Assessments included clinical/behavioral scales and an emotional Go/NoGo task-based fMRI (Go trials require a response; NoGo trials require response inhibition) acquired across thre

Longitudinal Study of Spatial Correlations Between Brain Imaging Changes and Atlas-Based Neurotransmitter Maps in Subcortical Ischemic Stroke.

Emerging evidence in ischemic stroke indicates that imbalances in serotonin and dopamine are linked to motor deficits in stroke survivors. Nevertheless, the spatial relationships between the biological mechanisms underlying stroke and the observed imaging changes remain poorly understood. This study aimed to explore neuroplasticity alterations in chronic subcortical ischemic stroke patients before and after 1-month pharmacological intervention, as well as to assess the spatial connections between the underlying biology and imaging changes. In the present study, all patients underwent two T1-we

fMRI-Based Alzheimer's Disease Detection Using the SAS Method with Multi-Layer Perceptron Network.

In the present scenario, Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is one of the incurable neuro-degenerative disorders, which accounts for nearly 60% to 70% of dementia cases. Currently, several machine-learning approaches and neuroimaging modalities are utilized for diagnosing AD. Among the available neuroimaging modalities, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is extensively utilized for studying brain activities related to AD. However, analyzing complex brain structures in fMRI is a time-consuming and complex task; so, a novel automated model was proposed in this manuscript for early diagnosis of A

Frontotemporal Pathology in Motor Neuron Disease Phenotypes: Insights From Neuroimaging.

Frontotemporal involvement has been extensively investigated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) but remains relatively poorly characterized in other motor neuron disease (MND) phenotypes such as primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), spinal bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), post poliomyelitis syndrome (PPS), and hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). This review focuses on insights from structural, metabolic, and functional neuroimaging studies that have advanced our understanding of extra-motor disease burden in these phenotypes. Th…

Consortium neuroscience of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder: The ENIGMA adventure.

Neuroimaging has been extensively used to study brain structure and function in individuals with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) over the past decades. Two of the main shortcomings of the neuroimaging literature of these disorders are the small sample sizes employed and the heterogeneity of methods used. In 2013 and 2014, the ENIGMA-ADHD and ENIGMA-ASD working groups were respectively, founded with a common goal to address these limitations. Here, we provide a narrative review of the thus far completed and still ongoing projects of these worki

Deep residual learning for neuroimaging: An application to predict progression to Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The unparalleled performance of deep learning approaches in generic image processing has motivated its extension to neuroimaging data. These approaches learn abstract neuroanatomical and functional brain alterations that could enable exceptional performance in classification of brain disorders, predicting disease progression, and localizing brain abnormalities. NEW METHOD: This work investigates the suitability of a modified form of deep residual neural networks (ResNet) for studying neuroimaging data in the specific application of predicting progression from mild cognitive impair

Individual differences in social network size linked to nucleus accumbens and hippocampal volumes in functional neurological disorder: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In the biopsychosocial formulation of functional neurological (conversion) disorder (FND), little is known about relationships between social behavior and brain anatomy. We hypothesized that social behavior would relate to brain areas implicated in affiliative behaviors and that social network size would correlate with symptom severity and predisposing vulnerabilities in FND. METHODS: This neuroimaging pilot probed how social network size, as measured by the Social Network Index, related to structural brain profiles in 23 patients with motor FND (15 woman and 8 men). Neuroimaging studies of essential tremor: how well do these studies support/refute the neurodegenerative hypothesis?

BACKGROUND: Tissue-based research has recently led to a new patho-mechanistic model of essential tremor (ET)-the cerebellar degenerative model. We are not aware of a study that has reviewed the current neuroimaging evidence, focusing on whether the studies support or refute the neurodegenerative hypothesis of ET. This was our aim. METHODS: References for this review were identified by searches of PubMed (1966 to February 2014). RESULTS: Several neuroimaging methods have been used to study ET, most of them based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The methods most specific to address the que

The "handwriting brain": a meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies of motor versus orthographic processes.

INTRODUCTION: Handwriting is a modality of language production whose cerebral substrates remain poorly known although the existence of specific regions is postulated. The description of brain damaged patients with agraphia and, more recently, several neuroimaging studies suggest the involvement of different brain regions. However, results vary with the methodological choices made and may not always discriminate between "writing-specific" and motor or linguistic processes shared with other abilities. METHODS: We used the "Activation Likelihood Estimate" (ALE) meta-analytical method to identify

Assessment of neuroimaging techniques as biomarkers of the progression of Parkinson's disease.

A major goal of research in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been the development of treatments to slow the progressive degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system and to reduce the functional decline of patients. Because of the uncertainty in the ability of the clinical evaluation to reflect the status of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system once dopaminergic therapy has commenced, investigators in PD have sought to develop alternative measures of disease. One approach, which has been extensively explored, is neuroimaging with radiotracers that interact with processes central to dopami
