OBJECTIVE: Medical training molds the future of healthcare worldwide. A balance between theoretical, technical, and communication skills is required for a physician to be competent and effective to the community, while preserving healthcare workers' quality of life and mental health. Therefore, a variety of innovative tools whose goals are to aid with medical learning are being implemented constantly. Artificial intelligence (AI) is acquiring mainstream media exposure due to tools such as ChatGPT and other AI chatbots. This may also have its uses in medical education and training.

BACKGROUND: Development and widespread use of laparoscopic bariatric surgery exposes emergency room physicians and general surgeons to face acute or chronic surgical complications of bariatric surgery.
METHODS: The most common surgical emergencies after bariatric surgery are examined based on an extensive review of bariatric surgery literature and on the personal experience of the authors' practice in four high-volume bariatric surgery centers.
RESULTS: An orderly stepwise approach to the bariatric patient with an emergency condition is advisable. Resuscitation should follow the same protoco

Public policy and health care are demonstrably interconnected. Medical and surgical outcomes are inseparableable from the political processes and laws that govern our nation. Health care delivery and public health are shaped by public discourse in city councils, county commissions, and state/national legislatures and agencies. Health inequities including barriers to access are the subject of ongoing political debate related to health care reform, practice management guidelines, firearm violence prevention, physician compensation, and Medicaid/Medicare policy. Effective surgical advocacy is per

OBJECTIVE: Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly been used in clinical and healthcare research, prompting the development of new research guidelines to ensure its appropriate use. Similarly, AI has been applied to surgical education research, creating a need to assess the relevance and applicability of existing guidelines in this context. This narrative review synthesized guidelines and checklists related to AI in surgical education, providing researchers with an introductory roadmap for conducting rigorous, reproducible studies and identifying gaps for future framework development.

This manuscript uses two personal surgical cases to explore hansei, the Japanese discipline of structured self-reflection, as a framework for technical and professional growth. The first case illustrates the limits of technical perfection and the inevitability of some complications. The second reveals the cost of acting on overcaution. Together, they trace the difficult boundary between error, prudence, and inherent surgical risk. The discussion contrasts hansei's explicit, disciplined acknowledgment of shortcomings with the Western tendency to obscure responsibility through passive language a

BACKGROUND: Knowledge translation (KT) interventions are essential for implementing evidence-based practices in healthcare. However, despite their proven effectiveness in addressing global health challenges, KT strategies in surgery remain challenging to apply. This scoping review examines KT strategies in surgery, their effectiveness, and key barriers and enablers to their implementation.
METHODS: This scoping review followed the Arksey and O'Malley and Levac et al. frameworks, integrating the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) and the PRISM (Practical Robus

In numerous examples in this series of essays on 'The Early Days of ...' there is argument and debate about who should be given the credit for introducing a particular major advance in treatment. However, in the story of the management of tumours involving the spinal cord, there is no doubt at all about priority; the surgeon was Victor Horsley and the date was June 1887! The patient was a Captain Gilbey, a business man and a retired Army officer. In 1884, shortly after his wife's death following a road traffic accident, he developed severe upper thoracic back pain. He was seen over succeeding

Compassion fatigue or "burn out" occurs in all surgeons at some point in their career. Compassion fatigue can be identified, prevented and treated by simple measures of self care. In addition, learning techniques of mindfulness can allow surgeons to see their work in a way that decreases stress.

Sanizade, who lived in the first half of the 19th century, is an important physician for his great contributions to the Ottoman Medicine, by transferring European medical knowledge. He has important books concerning history, as well as medicine. In one of his works on medicine, Hamse-i Sanizade, a work of five volumes, the volume titled Kanunü'l Cerrahin (the Law of Surgery), deals with surgery. The recent explosive growth in the use of endoscopic techniques in the performance of surgical procedures has created an important need for educational materials on this subject. However, limitations of currently available teaching tools frustrate the user and hamper the teaching and spread of these procedures. To improve on currently available methods, we developed a CD ROM video atlas of techniques in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The multimedia CD ROM video atlas combines the best features of the surgical atlas with conventional videotapes. The component steps of procedures in ESS are pre

Basing upon the experience of soviet medicine during the Great Patriotic War, organization of medical security of the Troops and Navy personnel in the post-war period, especially during the war in Afghanistan and local military conflicts and analysis of modern tendencies in military medicine development in the armies of foreign countries the authors formulate the principles of military-medical doctrine of the Armed Forces. The authors consider the following organizing principles of military-medical doctrine to be the main ones: the use of medical service mobile forces relying on the territoria

Denis Browne was the first surgeon in England to confine his practice entirely to children. The methods of treatment devised by him were new and often revolutionary and were frequently attacked and criticized, but they worked. He regarded his research into the aetiology of congenital deformities as his most important single scientific contribution. In 1931, he published his first article on talipes equinovarus. He further enlarged his theory of the mechanical origin of congenital deformities in a study published in 1936. The mechanical theory led him to search for treatment by use of selective

Galen of Pergamon (128-216 AD) is one of the most renowned physicians of antiquity, known for his extensive contributions to various medical disciplines. His early career included treating traumatic injuries, which developed his knowledge of human anatomy and surgical techniques. The aim of this work is to analyze the contributions of Galen to the history of pediatric surgery. Galen's work in pediatric surgery is notable for its detailed case reports and methods, such as using healing poultices. He emphasized the necessity of surgery only when required, criticizing colleagues who endangered pa

Guy de Chauliac, the most famous surgeon of the middle age, influenced the practice of surgery for centuries. His landmark work, in seven treatises, "Chirurgia Magna" was translated from Latin to French and became popular across Europe, educating hundreds of surgeons. In his book, a series of text fragments were dedicated in cancer such as breast tumor removal, amputation for soft tissue carcinomas of the extremities and cancer treatment using arsenic. Chauliac was probably the first physician to suggest the excision of cancer at early stage and this is considered as a promoter of surgical onc
