Chemical contaminants in gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) stranded along the west coast of North America.

The concentrations of selected chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g. PCBs, DDTs, DDEs, chlordanes) and essential (e.g. zinc, selenium, copper) and toxic (e.g. mercury, lead, arsenic) elements were measured in tissues and stomach contents from 22 gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) stranded between 1988 and 1991 at sites from the relatively pristine areas of Kodiak Island, AK, to more urbanized areas in Puget Sound, WA, and San Francisco Bay, CA. The majority of animals were stranded at sites on the Washington outer coast and in Puget Sound. The gray whale has the unique feeding strategy among Mystice

Groundwater arsenic content in quaternary aquifers of the Red River delta, Vietnam, controlled by the hydrogeological processes.

The relation between arsenic groundwater concentrations and hydrogeological processes was investigated in the proximal part of the Red River delta, Vietnam, west of the depression cone formed by the exploitation of groundwater in Hanoi. Flow paths in the Quaternary aquifers were modeled based on previously interpreted geological structure and hydrogeological data gathered during field work in 2014-2017. Sedimentary structures and simulated flow patterns were compared with the spatial distribution of the groundwater arsenic concentration. The regression of the sea in the area started 4 ka BP in

Ulva fasciata litter decomposition fuels microbial restructuring and antibiotic resistance proliferation in mariculture sediment.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pose a global public health threat, with marine environments acting as critical reservoirs for their dissemination. This study aimed to ascertain the nutrients release of Ulva (U.) fasciata litter and their effects on antibiotics resistance variation of maricultural sediment. Laboratory microcosms simulated decomposition under varying U. fasciata particle sizes (small, 5-6 mm; large, 2-3 cm) and biomass levels (2-10 g L-1) for 3 months. Results revealed that U. fasciata decomposition significantly increased nutrient concentrations, with total nitrogen and pho

Comparative metagenomic assessment of Illumina-compatible library preparation methods, short-read lengths, and PacBio HiFi sequencing reveals differences in microbial and functional diversity recovery from a complex environmental sample.

UNLABELLED: Metagenomics enables comprehensive exploration of microbial communities but is influenced by library preparation and sequencing technologies, affecting recovery of microbial genomes and proteins. Here, we benchmarked six Illumina-compatible short-read library preparation conditions in triplicate at 2 × 150 bp and 2 × 250 bp read lengths alongside PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing using a composite environmental sample of marine mangrove sediment and terrestrial palm tree soil. Longer short reads (2 × 250 bp) combined with optimal library preparation approaches improved assembly qual

DNA methylation as a biomarker of salinity and contaminant stress in mangrove crab Ucides occidentalis.

Epigenetic modifications provide underlying mechanisms of organism responses to environmental stressors, yet their role in estuarine species that are exposed to combined natural and anthropogenic pressures remains poorly understood. Here, we quantified global 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) representing epigenetic alteration in the red mangrove crab Ucides occidentalis across 14 sites with varying salinity levels and contamination profiles in the Guayas Estuary (Ecuador). To obtain comprehensive view of crabs' environmental stressors, we measured concentrations of 10 metals and three common pesticides

Long-term evolution of Fe oxyhydroxide mineralogy and potentially toxic element partitioning in mining-impacted sediments of the Lower Doce River fluvial-estuarine system.

The collapse of the Fundão dam in southeastern Brazil released large quantities of Fe-rich tailings into the Doce River basin, generating a long-term legacy of mining-derived sediments enriched in potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Although Fe oxyhydroxides are recognized as major geochemical hosts of contaminants, their long-term mineralogical evolution and relationships with PTE partitioning in tropical fluvial-estuarine systems remain poorly understood. This study investigated the distribution, crystallographic properties, and geochemical behavior of Fe oxyhydroxides in sediments collected

Comparative Analysis of Different Anodic Inoculum in Microbial Fuel Cell for Efficient Methylene Blue Dye Degradation.

This study investigates three different inoculum sources in dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs), such as Marine Sediment (MFC-MS), Estuary Sediment (MFC-ES), and Anaerobic Sludge (MFC-AS), to compare the efficacy for Methylene Blue (MB) dye degradation and electricity generation. All the MFCs were operated under identical conditions in batch mode using synthetic wastewater containing 3000 mg/L COD made using sodium acetate. The electrochemical study reveals that MFC inoculated with marine sediment achieved maximum power density of 35 mW/m² followed by anaerobic sludge (31 mW/m²) and estua

Predicting antifouling paint particle contamination based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing data using random forest-based machine learning.

Antifouling paints often contain biocides designed to inhibit biological growth, and antifouling paint particles (APPs) have been previously shown to affect microbial communities in sediment. Given that typical methods for monitoring for APP presence can be specialized and challenging, alternative methods using simple, standardized, and universal approaches, such as 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, would be highly valuable. This study uses a field-based mesocosm approach to train a random forest-based (supervised) machine learning model to predict APP presence and concentration in sediment based

Polyplacophora from the southwestern Adriatic Sea, with the description of three new species.

The examination of chitons (Polyplacophora) associated with sandy bioclastic sediments collected in the southwestern Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Basin) revealed the presence of three previously undescribed species: Leptochiton elisabettaesp. nov., L. gaiaesp. nov., and Ischnochiton falkorisp. nov. The latter two species preserve dried soft parts, allowing preliminary anatomical observations, particularly of the girdle. In addition, the studied sediments yielded valves of rare and recently described taxa (Leptochiton antondhorni, L. salicensis and Ischnochiton sigwartae), enabling refinement of

Sediments Microfungi Diversity in the Demänovská Ice Cave: A Combined Morpho-Molecular Approach with Edaphic N, P, K, C and pH Factors.

Subterranean environments represent extreme oligotrophic ecosystems where microclimatic and edaphic factors restrict microbial life. This study evaluated culturable fungal communities in the soil and sediment samples of the Demänovská Ice Cave to determine their spatial diversity and abundance across psychrophilic (5 °C) and mesophilic (24 °C) incubation temperatures in relation to soil and sediment chemistry. Using a combined morpho-molecular approach, 19 distinct fungal species were identified, with a strong taxonomic dominance of Ascomycota and the genus Penicillium. Culturing temperatures

Response mechanisms of denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) processes to typical quinolone antibiotics in freshwater wetland sub-surface sediments.

Sub-surface sediments in freshwater wetlands function as active habitats for microbial denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) processes and as hotspots for antibiotic accumulation. Focusing on the Baiyangdian wetland, which is contaminated with quinolone antibiotics (QNs) and hosts active DAMO processes, this study employed 13C-labeled microcosm incubation experiments, RT-qPCR, and gene sequencing to decipher the response mechanisms of DAMO processes to prevalent QNs in the sub-surface sediments (0.5 20 cm) of study area. Short-term exposure (24 h) to typical QNs at 200 ng·g-1 reduced

Environmental occurrence of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid from sulfluramid-based ant bait usage and its ecotoxicological risks.

In laboratory trials, sulfluramid (N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide; EtFOSA) has been shown to degrade into perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) under aerobic conditions, including in Brazilian agricultural soils. Thus, we aimed to investigate the environmental occurrence of PFOS in agricultural areas mostly used for forestry, where sulfluramid-based ant baits are primarily used. Surface water, groundwater, and sediment samples were collected from selected micro-watersheds, primarily used for forest plantation, and PFOS and its precursors were assessed by ultra-performance liquid chromatogra

Overlooked role of heterotrophic prokaryotes in sulfur oxidation makes the sediment of the Bohai Sea a sufficient sink of hydrogen sulfide.

Marine sediments are the active sites for the biogeochemical cycling of sulfur. Sulfate is used as a major terminal electron acceptor for the anaerobic oxidation of organic compounds in deep sediments, and the produced sulfide is normally oxidized back to sulfate in upper sediments. However, it is unclear which microorganisms, metabolic pathways, and enzymes are mainly involved in oxidation. Here, we used metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and the testing of sulfide, thiosulfate, and sulfite oxidation in sediment samples to figure out how sulfide is oxidized in the Bohai Sea sediments. Surpris

Occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of antibiotics in post-harvest and drained ponds of Sheyang River estuary in Jiangsu Province: Implications for sustainable aquaculture management.

Antibiotic contamination in aquaculture has long been a critical problem, jeopardizing aquatic ecosystems, food security, and human health. However, the post-harvest antibiotic residues in drained ponds, critical for guiding subsequent farming cycles, remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated 20 target antibiotics in white shrimp aquaculture ponds at the Sheyang Estuary, Jiangsu Province, China, focusing on sediments and the low-lying area residual water sampled three months after harvest and drainage. Sixteen antibiotics were detected in residual water at total concentr

Multiple antibiotic resistance and herbicide catabolic profiles of bacteria isolated from Lake Villarrica surface sediments (Chile).

Antibiotics and herbicides are contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic environments. Lake Villarrica is a relevant freshwater body in Chile and was recently designated a 'saturated nutrient zone'. Here, we investigated the occurrence of multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) and herbicide catabolic profiles among bacteria present in the surface sediments of Lake Villarrica. The occurrence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs; blaTEM, catA and tetM) and herbicide-catabolic genes (HCGs; phnJ and atzA) was investigated by qPCR. Subsequently, the presence of culturable bacteria with multiple resi

Assessment of sulfonamide contamination in aquatic environments: A first report for Argentina and environmental risk assessment.

The global surge in pharmaceutical consumption, driven by increasing population and the demand for animal proteins, leads to the discharge of diverse pollutants, including antibiotic residues, into water bodies. Sulfonamides, being water-soluble compounds, can readily enter surface run-off, posing potential risks to non-target species despite their low environmental concentrations. Latin America has implemented intensive production systems highly dependent on antimicrobials for productivity and animal health, yet there is a paucity of information regarding their concentration in the region. Phosphorus immobilization in sulfide-ferrous oxidation process driven by nitrate reduction during black-odorous sediment remediation.

During remediation of black-odorous sediment, the pathways of phosphorus immobilization require clarification alongside the oxidation of sulfide and ferrous. This study separated the oxidation stages of sulfide and ferrous through controlled sodium nitrate dosing ratios and methods, and analyzed the changes in phosphorus species and immobilization effects throughout these processes. Results showed that iron-bound phosphorus was the primary contributor to the phosphorus immobilization in the oxidation process, with increased 19% in ferrous oxidation stage and affected the transformation between

[Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Different River Sediments in Typical Cities: A Case Study of Shijiazhuang].

Rivers are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, most current studies have focused on the temporal and spatial distribution, and data on the differences in the species and abundance of ARGs between urban and rural rivers is still lacking for certain areas. In view of this, two rural rivers and three urban rivers were selected in Shijiazhuang City. In both December 2020 and April 2021, sediments were collected at 15 sampling sites. Metagenomic sequencing technology was used to compare the differences in temporal-spatial variation for ARGs in sediments. The results

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotic pollution and antibiotic resistance genes in seagrass meadow sediments based on metagenomics.

Seagrass meadows are one of the most important coastal ecosystems that provide essential ecological and economic services. The contamination levels of antibiotic and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in coastal ecosystems are severely elevated owing to anthropogenic disturbances, such as terrestrial input, aquaculture effluent, and sewage discharge. However, few studies have focused on the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics and their corresponding ARGs in this habitat. Thus, we investigated the antibiotic and ARGs profiles, microbial communities, and ARG-carrying host bacteria in typi
