AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate older peoples' experiences with acute hospital treatment and care, and variables that may influence these experiences.
BACKGROUND: In the Nordic countries, research on older peoples' experiences with hospital care is sparse.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from an acute geriatric ward in a hospital in Norway during a 1-year period (n = 189). Patient experience was assessed using the Picker Patient Experience Questionnaire, self-rated health by Euro-QoL 5-dimension, three-level version and comorbidity by Charlson comorbidity index.
RESULTS: Responders

Depressive symptoms and empty nest phenomenon of rural elderly people are both important public health issues, which should not be ignored. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and related factors of the empty nest elderly in rural China. We recruited 3182 eligible subjects and gathered data by face-to-face interview. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to explore the related factors of depressive symptoms. The present study showed that the prevalence of depressive symptoms significantly differed between empty nest old adults and non-empty nesters (24.1% vs.

BACKGROUND: The elderly are predisposed to septic arthritis (SA) because of the aging nature and increasing comorbidities. SA may in turn increase the long-term mortality in the geriatric patients; however, it remains unclear. We conducted this prospective nationwide population-based cohort study to clarify this issue.
METHODS: Using Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we identified 1667 geriatric participants (≥ 65 years) with SA and 16,670 geriatric participants without SA matched at a ratio of 1:10 by age, sex, and index date between 1999 and 2010. A comparison of t

Antiretroviral therapy has enabled people to live long lives with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). As a result, most HIV-infected adults in the United States are >50 years of age. In light of this changing epidemiology, HIV providers must recognize and manage multiple comorbidities and aging-related syndromes. Geriatric principles can help meet this new challenge, as preservation of function and optimization of social and psychological health are relevant to the care of aging HIV-infected adults, even those who are not yet old. Nonetheless, the field is still in its infancy. Although other

BACKGROUND: Delirium remains a major nosocomial complication of hospitalized elderly. Predictive models for delirium may be useful for identification of high-risk patients for implementation of preventive strategies.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate specific factors for development of delirium in a geriatric ward setting.
METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study comprised 675 consecutive patients aged 79.2±7.7 years (66% women and 34% men), admitted to the subacute geriatric ward of a multiprofile university hospital after exclusion of 113 patients treated with antipsychotic medication because of behav

BACKGROUND: Most studies focusing on improving the nutritional status of geriatric trauma patients exclude patients with cognitive impairment. These patients are especially at risk of malnutrition at admission and of worsening during the perioperative fasting period. This study was planned as a feasibility study to identify the difficulties involved in including this high-risk collective of cognitively impaired geriatric trauma patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective intervention study included cognitively impaired geriatric patients (Mini-Mental State Examination <25, age >65 years)

OBJECTIVE: To present a clinical report of a patient treated with corticosteroids for oral pemphigus vulgaris (PV) lesions.
BACKGROUND: PV is the type of pemphigus that most often affects the oral mucosa and tends not to appear in elderly people.
METHODS: Two biopsies were needed for diagnosis. She was treated with oral prednisone and topically with 0.05% clobetasol propionate.
CONCLUSION: An early diagnosis and treatment is needed for a good prognosis, especially in elderly patients with multiple systemic pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholecystitis is one of the common surgical procedures in the geriatric patients. Increased gallbladder wall thickness is expected due to acute cholecystitis and in some other clinical conditions. Routine histopathological evaluation of cholecystectomy materials are required to confirm the diagnosis and document other pathologies. The aim of this study was to evaluate age-related histopathological gallbladder morphometric measurements.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 371 cholecystectomy materials was performed. Two groups were designed ac

BACKGROUND/AIM: Malnutrition is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). In this study, we aimed to screen for malnutrition and geriatric syndromes and seek their associations in patients with AD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Katz Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) tests were applied. Mean daily oral fluid intake was assessed according to patients' and relatives' declarations.

BACKGROUND: The Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) is a recently developed scale aiming to evaluate symptoms of anxiety in later life. This 20-item scale uses dichotomous answers highlighting non-somatic anxiety complaints of elderly people. The present study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian Portuguese version GAI (GAI-BR) in a sample from community and outpatient psychogeriatric clinic.
METHODS: A mixed convenience sample of 72 subjects was recruited for answering the research protocol. The interview procedures were structured with questionnaires about sociodemog

INTRODUCTION: Mobile geriatric rehabilitation is an outpatient rehabilitative treatment in which a multidisciplinary team treats elderly patients at home. This kind of treatment has been performed in rare cases in Germany but there are no data available on the effectiveness in patients with severe cognitive and functional impairment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a retrospective study design the data of all patients who had participated in mobile geriatric rehabilitation between 1 September 2009 and 23 May 2011 were evaluated. Before treatment a comprehensive geriatric assessment was performed and

BACKGROUND: According to international recommendations [from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association/European Society of Cardiology] and those of the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) in France, treatment with a vitamin K antagonist is recommended in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) in the presence of a high thromboembolic risk factor [history of stroke, transient ischemic attack, systemic embolism, or valvular heart disease, or presence of a mechanical heart valve prosthesis] or at least two moderate risk factors (age ≥75 years, hypertension, congestive heart failure,

Elderly ESRD patients often lose functionality when they start dialysis, which may be due to a variety of clinical problems. We recently postulated that intensive (longer and/or more frequent) hemodialysis (HD) may be the ideal strategy to try to prevent these ESRD- and dialysis-related complications, including dialysis-induced hypotension, cardiac and cerebral events, malnutrition, infections, sleep problems, and psychological issues. The feasibility of home dialysis therapies has been demonstrated in observational studies. As self-care dialysis is often a challenge in the elderly patient, as
