The eleventh reported case of Mulvihill-Smith syndrome in the literature.

BACKGROUND: The Mulvihill-Smith Syndrome was first recognized in 1975. After the recognition of the Mulvihill-Smith Syndrome, ten cases have been described. CASE PRESENTATION: This article describes the eleventh case of this syndrome in a male patient, 24 years-old with short stature and microcephaly with mild cognitive impairment, deafness and allergic conjunctivitis. The patient was hospitalized several times for repeated infections, and the presence of multiple melanocytic nevi on his skin was noticed. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the entire set of signs and symptoms presented in our study, it w

Guidelines for the management of growth failure in childhood inflammatory bowel disease.

Around 1 in 4 patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) present in childhood, the majority around the time of their pubertal growth spurt. This presents challenges over and above those of managing IBD in adults as this period is a time of dramatic psychological and physical transition for a child. Growth and nutrition are key priorities in the management of adolescents and young adults with IBD. Growth failure in IBD is characterized by delayed skeletal maturation and a delayed onset of puberty, and is best described in terms of height-for-age standard deviation score (Z score) or by vari

[Effects of calcium on the course of strontium toxicosis].

Chronic intake of Sr for 20 days by chickens caused in them a delay in body mass increase and symptoms of rickets in spite of complete provision with vitamin D. There were low levels of Ca, P, enhanced activity of alkaline phosphatase in the serum, inhibited mineralization of bone tissue, reduced levels of vitamin D-dependent calcium-binding protein, Sr accumulation in various tissues. Enrichment with Ca of the chickens ration diminished the above signs of Sr toxicosis. It is suggested that a protective effect of Ca in chronic Sr toxicity may be due to more active discrimination of Sr against

Accelerated growth in children.

Many tall-statured children will display variations of normal growth patterns, such as familial tall stature or familial rapid maturation. However, precocious puberty and a number of rarer diseases that can cause accelerated growth require the earliest possible detection and treatment to ensure that underlying problems are appropriately treated and optimum final adult height is attained. Most of these syndromes are rare. Nevertheless, the pediatric nurse practitioner should be acquainted with them to make timely and appropriate referrals to endocrinologists, geneticists, cardiologists, or orth

Weaver syndrome: a case without early overgrowth and review of the literature.

A female child with Weaver syndrome is described. She did not show the excessive growth characteristic of this syndrome until after adequate caloric intake was achieved by feeding through a gastric feeding tube. Her inadequate nutrition was a result of feeding difficulties during infancy. In addition, she had recurrent pulmonary infections, apneic spells, and severe developmental delay. She died at 16 months of sepsis, congestive heart failure, and respiratory arrest. The autopsy revealed marked atrophy of the brain and cardiac ventricular hypertrophy. Most of the brain changes were thought to

The fracture of the proximal end of the radius in adolescence.

According to a follow-up of 50 fractures of the proximal end of the radius in adolescence the cause and prevention of later persisting functional disturbances, posttraumatic valgisation of the elbow axis and posttraumatic growth disturbances are investigated. Furthermore, the limitations of spontaneous correction of malposition in this area during further growth should be defined. Contrary to current opinion prevailing till now in the literature, not the primary tilt, but the performed therapy turned out to be the cause for later functional disturbance: we found significantly more frequently f

Hemihypertrophy in a boy with renal polycystic disease: varied patterns of presentation of renal polycystic disease in his family.

Hemihypertrophy is a condition that has been described in association with a variety of other malformations and diseases; quite often these have had a renal origin. -It is the purpose of this paper to record and discuss the occurrence of polycystic disease in a family, to note that the disease was manifest as either the "adult" or the "infantile" form, and detail the fact that one member of the family who had infantile type polycystic disease also had hemihypertrophy. -The pattern of inheritance of renal polycystic disease, its age at presentation and the variation in the boy of its manifestat

Orthopaedic Manifestations of Inborn Errors of Metabolism.

»: Inborn errors of metabolism are disorders of carbohydrate, amino acid, organic acid, or purine and pyrimidine metabolism; disorders of fatty acid oxidation; disorders of metal metabolism; and lysosomal storage defects that can cause metabolic derangements that have secondary musculoskeletal effects. »: Orthopaedic surgeons should be aware that patients with inborn errors of metabolism may be at high risk for spasticity, which may cause joint subluxations, scoliosis, and contractures, as well as poor bone quality, which is caused by malnutrition or disordered bone growth. »: Multidisciplin

New molecular genetic tests in the diagnosis of heart disease.

With the increasing use of next-generation sequencing applications, there has been an increase in identification of genetic causes of cardiac disease. This technology has also enabled the transition of these genes into the clinical setting and the rapid growth of large gene tests for the diagnosis of heart disorders. The ability to combine tests to include similar, but distinct, diseases has shown that many genes can be responsible for a wide variety of both syndromic and nonsyndromic disorders. This article discusses the current state of molecular genetic diagnosis for cardiac disorders, focu

Assessment of children with pervasive developmental disorders.

TOPIC: Pervasive developmental disorders, a group of conditions marked by impaired social reciprocity, communication deficits, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. PURPOSE: Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are in a unique position to assess these children, make appropriate diagnoses, and refer parents for further consultation and intervention. SOURCES: Current literature, formal training on diagnostic instruments, and clinical experience. CONCLUSIONS: Diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorders requires knowledge of normal growth and development and other childhood psychiatric disorders.

Nomenclature and classification of temporomandibular joint disorders.

Currently, there are basically two approaches to classification, one based on structural and one on positional changes occurring within the joint. Despite the increase in knowledge of pathologic changes occurring within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the disc still seems to be a central issue in nomenclature and classifications of TMJ disorders. Basic pathologies of the TMJ involve inflammation and degeneration in arthritic disorders (irrespective of the presence or position of the disc) and structural aberrations in growth disorders. Some internal derangements may occur independent of und…
