Number of recent sexual partners among blood donors in Brazil: associations with donor demographics, donation characteristics, and infectious disease markers.

BACKGROUND: Brazilian blood centers ask candidate blood donors about the number of sexual partners in the past 12 months. Candidates who report a number over the limit are deferred. We studied the implications of this practice on blood safety. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed demographic characteristics, number of heterosexual partners, and disease marker rates among 689,868 donations from three Brazilian centers between July 2007 and December 2009. Donors were grouped based on maximum number of partners allowed in the past 12 months for each center. Chi-square and logistic regression an

Identification of subtype B, multiple circulating recombinant forms and unique recombinants of HIV type 1 in an MSM cohort in China.

To study HIV-1 genetic diversity among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) in China, a cohort consisting of HIV-positive MSM was established in 2005 and was monitored every 2 years. In 2007, 44 HIVpositiveMSM subjects were genotyped, and the results showed HIV-1 subtype B decreased from 77.5% to41.9%, but non-B subtypes increased rapidly represented by CRF01_AE from 3.7% to 30.2% compared to 2005.In addition, one case of CRF07_BC was first identified in this population, which mainly circulated among HIV-1-infected injection drug users (IDUs) in China. There were 11 unique recombinant

HIV transmission risk behavior among men and women living with HIV in 4 cities in the United States.

Determining rates of HIV transmission risk behavior among HIV-positive individuals is a public health priority, especially as infected persons live longer because of improved medical treatments. Few studies have assessed the potential for transmission to the partners of HIV-positive persons who engage in high-risk activities. A total of 3723 HIV-infected persons (1918 men who have sex with men [MSM], 978 women, and 827 heterosexual men) were interviewed in clinics and community-based agencies in Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York City, and San Francisco from June 2000 to January 2002 regarding s

HIV infection and AIDS in Jerusalem: a microcosm of illness in Israel.

During the decade 1985-94, 158 individuals (124 males, 34 females) with HIV/AIDS were seen at the AIDS clinic of Hadassah University Hospital. They comprised 10% of the total reported number of HIV-infected Israelis and included 6% of all reported HIV-infected Ethiopians and all HIV-infected West Bank Palestinians. Most individuals (82%) were self-referred; 12% were detected through the local HIV screening clinic. Risk groups for AIDS were homo/bisexuality (39%), heterosexual relations (30%), intravenous drug abuse (15%), contaminated blood transfusions (9%), born to HIV+ mothers (1%), and hem

Sexual Behaviors among Individuals Aged 20-49 in Japan: Initial Findings from a Quasi-Representative National Survey, 2022.

Nationally representative data on sexual health and behaviors in Japan are scarce. We conducted an online survey, including questions about a range of topics related to sexual behaviors and outcomes. The sample, including 8000 men and women aged 20-49 years in Japan, was stratified by sex and weighted with respect to age, marital status, and region of residence to reflect the population of Japan. Of the women, 82.9% and 10.0% reported that they were heterosexual and asexual, respectively; corresponding proportions for men were 87.4% and 6.9%. 15.3% of women and 19.8% of men reported never havi

Associations Between Having a Spouse/Partner with Alcohol Problems and One's Own Risk of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders by Sexual Orientation.

INTRODUCTION: The association between an individual's alcohol misuse and their spouse's/partner's behavioral health is well documented. Whether these associations vary by sexual orientation is unknown. METHODS: We used data from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III; n = 36,309 U.S. adults ≥18 years). Using multivariable logistic regression models, we examined the associations between sexual orientation (heterosexual-identified with concordant attraction/behavior, heterosexual-identified with discordant attraction/behavior, gay/lesbian, and

Sexual Identity Is Associated With Adverse Childhood Experiences in US Early Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To determine disparities in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) by sexual identity in a national cohort of early adolescents. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from year 2 of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (N = 10,934, 2018-20, ages 10-14 years). Disparities in ACE scores across lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB), not sure, and heterosexual adolescents were assessed using multinomial logistic regression analyses. Logistic regressions estimated the associations between sexual identity and each individual ACE. Analyses were adjusted for potential confounders.

The Association Between Sexual Identity, Depression, and Adolescent Substance Use.

Sexual minority youth (SMY) represent a population vulnerable to several adverse health consequences. Specifically, SMY experience depression and substance use at substantially higher rates than heterosexual peers. Better understanding the relationship between depression and substance use among SMY may help reduce morbidity and mortality. We hypothesize that depression will moderate increased substance use rates seen in SMY. Weighted logistical analyses of covariance, adjusted for race/ethnicity, sex, and age, compared the relationship between sexual identity, depression, and substance use (14

Disparities in traditional and alternative tobacco product use across sexual orientation groups of young adult men and women in the US.

Background: Despite literature documenting disparities in tobacco use among sexual minority young adults, research is just emerging regarding alternative tobacco product (ATP) use among specific sexual minority men versus women. The current study examined associations between sexual orientation and traditional and ATP use among young adult men and women. Methods: We analyzed survey data (September-December 2018) from 2,809 young adults (ages 18-34) recruited via social media. Multivariable regression models were used to examine the binary outcomes of any past 30-day use of cigarettes, e-cigare

Re-assessing the late HIV diagnosis surveillance definition in the era of increased and frequent testing.

OBJECTIVES: Late HIV diagnosis (CD4 <350 cells/mm3 ) is a key public health metric. In an era of more frequent testing, the likelihood of HIV diagnosis occurring during seroconversion, when CD4 counts may dip below 350, is greater. We applied a correction, considering markers of recent infection, and re-assessed 1-year mortality following late diagnosis. METHODS: We used national epidemiological and laboratory surveillance data from all people diagnosed with HIV in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (EW&NI). Those with a baseline CD4 <350 were reclassified as 'not late' if they had evidence

Discovery of new genetic loci for male sexual orientation in Han population.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that the genetic factors partly influence the development of same-sex sexual behavior, but most genetic studies have focused on people of primarily European ancestry, potentially missing important biological insights. Here, we performed a two-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) with a total sample of 1478 homosexual males and 3313 heterosexual males in Han Chinese populations and identified two genetic loci (rs17320865, Xq27.3, FMR1NB, Pmeta = 8.36 × 10-8, OR = 1.29; rs7259428, 19q12, ZNF536, Pmeta = 7.58 × 10-8, OR = 0.75) showing consistent as

Opioid-Related Disparities in Sexual Minority Youth, 2017.

OBJECTIVES: In light of the opioid epidemic, it is essential to understand which subgroups of youth are at elevated risk for opioid use. Sexual minority groups have increased rates of substance use compared to heterosexual youth. Our study aims to examine the prevalence of both prescription opioid misuse and heroin use in adolescents. We then examine odds of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use adjusting for common covariates. METHODS: Using 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System data, we examined lifetime odds of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use among sexual minority yout

Is increased screening and early antiretroviral treatment for HIV-1 worth the investment? An analysis of the public health and economic impact of improvement in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: Early treatment of HIV-1 infection at all CD4 levels has demonstrated clinical and public health benefits. This analysis examined the costs, health outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of increased HIV-1 screening and early treatment initiation in the UK. METHODS: A Markov model followed theoretical cohorts of men who have sex with men (MSM), heterosexuals, and people who inject drugs (PWID) with initially undiagnosed HIV-1 infection over their remaining lifetimes. The analysis examined increased HIV-1 screening (resulting in 10-50% improvements in diagnosis rates) versus current scre
