Extragenital Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing Among Louisiana Parish Health Units, 2016-2019.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that men who have sex with men (MSM) get tested annually for urethral and rectal chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (NG), and pharyngeal NG. There are no national recommendations to screen women and heterosexual men at extragenital sites. We assessed extragenital CT/NG screening among men and women at Louisiana's Parish Health Units (PHU). METHODS: The Louisiana STD/HIV/Hepatitis Program piloted extragenital screening at 4 PHUs in February 2016 and expanded to 11 PHUs in 2017. Sexual histories were used to identify gender of sex

Neisseria gonorrhoeae positivity in contacts presenting to a sexual health centre.

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding antimicrobial resistance and the appropriate use of antibiotics have resulted in many sexual health clinics moving away from the epidemiological treatment of contacts of gonorrhoea. The aim of this study was to inform decision-making regarding patients who are contacts who should be given epidemiological treatment. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of positivity rates of symptomatic and asymptomatic contacts of gonorrhoea who attended the Adelaide Sexual Health Centre from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019. Relevant demographic and behavioural characterist

Prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis infections among adolescent men who have sex with men and transgender women in Salvador, Northeast Brazil.

Adolescent men who have sex with men (AMSM) and transgender women (ATGW) enrolled as part of the PrEP1519 study between April 2019 and February 2021 in Salvador were tested for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections. We performed real-time polymerase chain reaction using oropharyngeal, anal, and urethral swabs; assessed factors associated with NG and CT infections using multivariable Poisson regression analysis with robust variance; and estimated the prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). In total, 246 participants were included in the anal

Epidemiological Characteristics and Factors Associated with Repeat Sexually Transmitted Infections in Barcelona, Spain Over a Decade.

In the last few years, the frequency of sexually transmitted infections (STI) has increased, as has the number of people with multiple infections. The aim of our study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of persons with repeated bacterial STI and to determine the risk factors for these episodes in persons living in Barcelona during the period 2007-2018. We studied all cases of bacterial STI included in the STI registry of Barcelona. Repeated STI were defined as a diagnosis of gonorrhea, syphilis, or lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) after a first episode of one of these infections

Polydrug Use, Sexual Risk, and HIV Testing Among Cisgender Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men and Transgender and Nonbinary Individuals Who Have Sex With Men in Kazakhstan.

This study examined substance use and sexual risk correlates of HIV testing among cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men (MSM) and transgender and nonbinary individuals (TSM) who have sex with men in Kazakhstan. We analyzed baseline data from an HIV prevention trial collected prior to intervention deployment (N = 304). Multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed that lifetime HIV testing was positively associated with poly-drug use (AOR = 4.4, 95% CI [2.0, 9.9]) and negatively with sexual risk (AOR = 0.4, 95% CI [0.2, 1.0]). Similarly, recent HIV testing was positively associated with

Behavioural survey and street-based HIV and HCV rapid testing programme among transgender sex workers.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women sex workers (TGW-SW) are disproportionally affected by HIV and have reduced access to testing. Moreover, information regarding their behaviours and health needs is scarce. METHODS: A behavioural survey and a targeted testing programme in prostitution sites were conducted in Milan and Monza areas. The non-profit organisation 'ALA Milano Onlus' and 'San Gerardo' Hospital (Monza) implemented a mobile HIV testing unit involving a TGW peer educator, four physicians, a counsellor, a psychologist and a cultural mediator. All TGW-SW were offered anonymous HIV and hepatit

Assumptions about patients seeking PrEP: Exploring the effects of patient and sexual partner race and gender identity and the moderating role of implicit racism.

INTRODUCTION: Daily pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV-prevention is an essential component of national plans to end the HIV epidemic. Despite its well-documented safety and effectiveness, PrEP prescription has not met the public health need. Significant disparities between White and Black people exist with respect to PrEP prescription, as do disparities between men and women. One factor contributing to these disparities is clinicians' assumptions about patients seeking PrEP. METHODS: The present study sought to investigate medical students' assumptions about patients seeking PrEP (antic

Monkeypox: A Review.

Monkeypox is caused by a pox virus closely related to smallpox virus and spreads from animals to humans, and humans to humans following close contact. Prior smallpox vaccination gives partial protection against monkeypox. The steady increase in monkeypox cases in Africa over the past few decades were ignored by the global scientific community till this year, when more than 16,000 cases have been reported from nonendemic countries. Monkeypox has recently been labelled as a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO. While most of the current cases are in men who have sex with m

Chemsex and incidence of sexually transmitted infections among Canadian pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users in the l'Actuel PrEP Cohort (2013-2020).

OBJECTIVES: Use of illicit substances during sex (chemsex) may increase transmission of HIV and other STIs. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective at preventing HIV transmission, providing an important prevention tool for those who practise chemsex. However, it does not prevent acquisition of other STIs. We aim to examine the impact of chemsex on STI incidence among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM), and transgender women using PrEP in Montréal, Canada. METHODS: We linked baseline sociodemographic and behavioural data with follow-up STI testing from 2013 t

Evidence of Sexual Transmission of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacterales: A Cross-sectional and Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) represent a major threat to public health. Little is known on their potential for sexual transmission. METHODS: We recruited individuals at a sexually transmitted infection and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) outpatient clinic in Paris, France, in whom we evaluated the prevalence of ESBL-E intestinal carriage and, among those testing positive, the proportion with clearance 6 months thereafter. We compared carriage prevalence between groups using logistic regression adjusted for age, geographic origin, travel outs

Sexual orientation and quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS in China: evidence from an institutional-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: At the end of 2019, there were approximately one million people known to be living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in China. Different sexual orientation groups were observed within the people living with HIV in general, and studies have found that socially marginalized groups exist among this population, such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and bisexual individuals. Correspondingly, sexual orientation may pose challenges to the emotional and psychological development of PLWHA. Under this background, we aim to analyze whether sexual orientation affects the health-related quality of life (

Oral, Vaginal and Anal Sexual Practices among Heterosexual Males and Females Attending a Sexual Health Clinic: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Melbourne, Australia.

Sex practices among heterosexuals are not well studied. We aimed to explore sexual practices among heterosexuals attending a sexual health clinic. This cross-sectional survey was conducted at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre between March and April 2019. Data were collected on kissing, oral sex (fellatio or cunnilingus), vaginal sex, anal sex and rimming in the previous 3 months. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the associations between engaging in anal sex and other sex practices. There were 709 participants (333 men; 376 women) who were eligi

A Comparative Analysis of Reported Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Cases Among US Army Soldiers, 2015 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia and gonorrhea have increased nationally and in the US Army. Rates reported in the Army are elevated relative to the general population, partly because of differing population demographics. METHODS: Age- and sex-specific chlamydia and gonorrhea case rates among Army active component soldiers and the wider 18- to 64-year-old US adult population were computed from reports submitted through national and military surveillance systems in 2015 to 2019. Rates were standardized using the 2015 Army age and sex population distribution. Multivariable generalized linear models were g

Impacts of Human Papillomavirus Immunization Programs on Rates of Anogenital Warts in British Columbia, Canada, 2000 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: In 2008, British Columbia (BC) implemented a school-based quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV-4) immunization program for girls born in 1994 or later. In 2015, an expanded clinic-based program included men who report sex with men (MSM) born in 1989 or later. To evaluate the impacts of HPV-4 programs on anogenital warts (AGWs), diagnosis rates were measured among women who report sex with men (WSM), men who report sex with women (MSW), and MSM. METHODS: Diagnoses of AGW were ascertained from 16 sexually transmitted infection clinics. Rates were calculated as new AGW diagnoses ov

High prevalence of sexually transmitted coinfections among at-risk people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Concurrent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are not uncommon in at-risk populations, for which control requires integrated testing, treatment and prevention. METHODS: From May, 2019 to February, 2020, multiplex real-time PCR assays were prospectively performed to detect Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) in the urine and rectal/vaginal swab specimens collected from HIV-positive patients with a history of STIs or symptoms suggestive of STIs. Patients confirmed to have acquired STIs were treated according to treatment

HIV-related posts from a Chinese internet discussion forum: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: In China, the introduction of antiretroviral treatment has increased the number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). New technologies, such as social media, might be useful for enhancing HIV surveillance, especially given the lack of Chinese research, which is related to stigma and discrimination. Thus, the relative anonymity of social media may make it useful for evaluating "hard to reach" PLWHA. SETTING: This study used social media data to assess whether it reflected the prevalence of HIV and to explore PLWHA' needs and online habits. METHODS: In 2017, the Baidu Tieba platf

[Canal anal carcinoma].

Canal anal carcinoma. Anal carcinomas are rare, but their incidence has increased in recent years. They are induced by the Human papillomas virus (mostly genotype 16). The prevalence is high among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) and primary prevention by vaccination against HPV is a source of hope in this population. Screening is based on the detection and treatment of precancerous lesions, called anal intra-epithelial neoplasia, which can be of low grade or high grade. It concerns a category of HIV-infected patients: MSM, history of condyloma or precancerous/cancerous lesions of
