Pain associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Despite a comprehensive approach to the treatment of JRA patients, pain remains a largely underdeveloped area of research and an undertreated clinical problem. Pain is a highly prevalent condition in JRA patients, one that in adults has been shown to be highly predictive of current medication usage and future disability. This recurrent or chronic pain syndrome is currently treated primarily with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but inclusion of pain management specialists on the interdisciplinary team will allow for greater use of nonpharmacologic means of pain management.

[Effect of tiapride on the activity of neuroleptics and other kinds of drugs in mice and rats].

Tiapride is a central dopamine receptor specific antagonist, and it has a benzamide chemical structure. This drug is very useful for the treatment of dyskinesia and such abnormal behaviors as delirium and psychomotor excitation in patients with arteriosclerosis. Most of these patients are elderly and generally suffer from other diseases. Since they are apt to be treated with several drugs for such diseases, the effect of tiapride in combination with various kinds of drugs was examined in rats and mice. Tiapride significantly potentiated the catalepsy-inducing effect of haloperidol and chlorpro

Evoked potentials in hysteria and malingering.

Evoked potentials are often helpful in confirming the nonorganic nature of sensory symptoms in hysteria and malingering. In a retrospective analysis, such cases were found to comprise approximately 1% of referrals to a university hospital laboratory. However, the diagnostic usefulness of electrophysiologic tests is limited in some clinical settings: normal responses may be encountered in subjects with certain organic deficits, and "abnormal" responses can sometimes be produced voluntarily by normal subjects. In malingering--as opposed to hysteria--the role of the technologist in monitoring pat

Adrenergic knockout demonstrated resistance to α 2 -agonist hypnosis and moderate resistance to hypothermia and impaired coordination with forced movement. GABAergic knockout showed resistance only to impairment of spontaneous movement by α 2 -agonists. Spectral analysis of the EEG showed an increase in proportion of …

Corticosterone microinjected into nucleus pontis oralis increases tonic immobility in rats.

Tonic immobility (TI) is also known as "immobility response", "immobility reflex", "animal hypnosis", etc. It is an innate antipredatory behavior characterized by an absence of movement, varying degrees of muscular activity, and a relative unresponsiveness to external stimuli. Experimentally, TI is commonly produced by manually forcing an animal into an inverted position and restraining it in that position until the animal becomes immobile. Part of the neural mechanism(s) of TI involves the medullo-pontine reticular formation, with influence from other components of the brain, notably the limb…

Midazolam and other benzodiazepines.

The actions of benzodiazepines are due to the potentiation of the neural inhibition that is mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Practically all effects of the benzodiazepines result from their actions on the ionotropic GABA(A) receptors in the central nervous system. Benzodiazepines do not activate GABA(A) receptors directly but they require GABA. The main effects of benzodiazepines are sedation, hypnosis, decreased anxiety, anterograde amnesia, centrally mediated muscle relaxation and anti-convulsant activity. In addition to their action on the central nervous system, benzodiazepines …

Gut-directed hypnotherapy versus standard medical treatment for nausea in children with functional nausea or functional dyspepsia: protocol of a multicentre randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of chronic functional nausea or nausea due to functional dyspepsia in children is generally symptomatic. Moreover, these disorders pose a risk for worse psychosocial and health outcomes in children. Hypnotherapy (HT), by its ability to positively influence gastrointestinal and psychosocial functioning, may be an effective treatment for chronic nausea. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: To test efficacy, this multicentre, parallel, randomised controlled, open label trial evaluates whether gut-directed HT is superior to standard medical treatment (SMT) for reducing nausea. Memory focused interventions (MFI) as a therapeutic strategy in hypnotic psychotherapy.

The prospect of utilizing memory plasticity (the constructive and transitory nature of memory) for therapeutic purposes has not been widely recognized. However, a number of theoretical and clinical venues throughout the last century have shown its potential application. Intensive research conducted during these last decades, pointed out the possibility of influencing human memory in relation to new memories and their specific components. Moreover, the research showed the feasibility of planting alternative early childhood memories and thus altering memories of personal history. Additionally, r

Effects of Non-Pharmacological Interventions on Pain and Psychological Outcomes in Patients with Burns: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-pharmacological interventions are used alongside analgesia in burn care, but the evidence comes from clinically diverse interventions, populations, and settings. METHODS: We searched nine databases from inception to July 1, 2026. Controlled studies of virtual reality, music, massage, hypnosis, relaxation, distraction, or structured psychological interventions in patients with burns were eligible. Continuous outcomes measuring the same construct were synthesized as Hedges'g standardized mean differences (SMDs) using random-effects models. Multi-arm trials contributed one indepe…

Sources, impacts, and mechanisms of non-pharmacological artifacts in processed electroencephalography monitoring during anaesthesia and intensive care: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Processed EEG (pEEG) monitoring is widely used to assess depth of hypnosis during anaesthesia and sedation in intensive care. However, these systems are susceptible to non-brain-related artifacts. Although previous reviews have identified sources of artifacts, their specific effects on electroencephalographic signals and derived hypnotic indices have not been systematically synthesised. This scoping review aims to summarise non-pharmacological artifact sources affecting pEEG monitoring in perioperative and ICU settings, including their impact on hypnotic indices and underlying mech…
