The role of antioxidants in idiopathic male factor infertility.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Idiopathic male factor infertility remains a major reproductive health concern, presenting with abnormal semen parameters despite no identifiable anatomical, hormonal, genetic, infectious, or endocrine cause. Oxidative stress is recognized as a central mechanism, as excessive reactive oxygen species can impair sperm concentration, motility, morphology, mitochondrial function, and DNA integrity. This review evaluates antioxidant therapy, mainly, in idiopathic male factor infertility. RECENT FINDINGS: Current evidence suggests that selected antioxidants may improve several se…

Clinical characteristics of different subtypes of adenomyosis in infertility.

This study aimed to compare the clinical histories and clinicopathological characteristics between internal and external adenomyosis (ADM) among infertile women. A total of 759 infertile patients aged 24 to 40 years were enrolled from the Sports New City Branch of Dalian Maternal and Child Health Hospital (Group) from June 2018 to September 2024. All patients were divided into 3 groups according to magnetic resonance imaging-based ADM typing: internal ADM group (n = 418), external ADM group (n = 113), and non-ADM control group (n = 228). Baseline clinical histories and clinicopathological para

Microplastics and female infertility: reproductive toxicity and underlying mechanisms.

In modern society, the progression of ovarian aging in women has accelerated, and the incidence of infertility has increased markedly with a distinct younger-onset trend. Exploring the etiology and pathogenesis of infertility has become a core research focus for clinicians. Plastic products bring tremendous convenience to modern life, while the health risks caused by plastic pollution have aroused global concern. As typical endocrine-disrupting chemicals, microplastics (MPs) can enter the human body through dietary intake, respiration, and skin contact, and accumulate in multiple organs. Accum…

Absence of CDK12 in oocyte leads to female infertility.

Transcriptional activity and gene expression are critical for the development of mature, meiotically competent oocytes. Our study demonstrates that the absence of cyclin-dependent kinase 12 (CDK12) in oocytes leads to complete female sterility, as fully developed oocytes capable of completing meiosis I are absent from the ovaries. Mechanistically, CDK12 regulates RNA polymerase II activity in growing oocytes and ensures the maintenance of the physiological maternal transcriptome, which is essential for protein synthesis that drives further oocyte growth. Notably, CDK12-deficient growing oocyte

Neglected Tropical Diseases and Female Infertility: Possible Pathophysiological Mechanisms.

Battling female infertility has posed a global challenge, where neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are nonetheless a notable contributing factor. NTDs affect a variety of diseases, often of a chronic nature, which are often cited as some of the most lethal diseases operating against the most economically disadvantaged populations across the globe. The various causative agents for NTDs have been documented and could originate from a myriad of sources-from bacteria, fungi and viruses to ecto- and endoparasitic species-including but not limited to helminths and protozoa. This paper will seek to d…

Reproductive microbiota in humans: characterization and role in infertility.

Advancements in next generation sequencing technologies, including 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, have vastly expanded our understanding of reproductive microbiota and its role in fertility. For example, in humans, the bacterial genus of Lactobacillus is the overwhelmingly dominant commensal bacterium within reproductive tissues and fluids, such as the vagina, and is an indicator of fertility in women. Shifts away from Lactobacillus allow for opportunistic pathogenic bacteria to inhabit the reproductive tract and result in dysbiosis and infertility. The goal of this review is to explore human r…

Dignity-based care and infertility treatment: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of infertile people is generally time-consuming and requires frequent and long-term visits and providing dignity-based services. Due to the different perceptions and experiences of people and the lack of a specific study to explain the concept of dignity-based care, this study aimed to explain the concept and dimensions of dignity-based care in infertility treatment services. METHODS: This was a qualitative study with a conventional content analysis approach. Fifty participants (20 infertile women, 16 infertile men, and 14 key informants) were recruited using a pur…

Genetic syndromes leading to male infertility: a systematic review.

Male-factor infertility is a multifactorial, complex, and increasingly common condition, of which genetic factors have more frequently been implicated. Not only are the causal relationships between genetic variation and male infertility phenotypes understudied, but also the differences in frequency of disease-causing genetic alterations within different geographic and ethnic groups. Guidelines remain inconsistent as to recommended genomic testing during the male infertility workup. Our current fund of knowledge limits our diagnostic capability where the etiology of male infertility remains idi…

Temperature change and male infertility prevalence: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Although the effects of climate change on human health are widely recognized, its potential role in male infertility prevalence has not been thoroughly examined. This study seeks to explore the association between changes in ambient temperature and the prevalence of male infertility. METHODS: This ecological study encompassed 174 countries and regions. We utilized data from 2000 to 2019 on the age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) of male infertility and ambient temperature to assess their potential association. The analysis accounted for several covariates, including the Sociod…

Determination of carriers of deafness-infertility syndrome in Peru.

The prevalence of deafness-infertility syndrome (DIS) is approximately 1%. Genetic heterogeneity is one cause of homozygous copy number variants (CNVs) involving the CATSPER2 and STRC genes, which are associated with DIS and male infertility. Because the prevalence of DIS in Peru is unknown, we aimed to determine the frequency of carriers of DIS-related genes. In this descriptive crossover study, we evaluated the clinical histories and chromosomal microarray analysis results of patients at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño Breña from 2015 to 2022. All patients with CNVs involving the CA…

[Primary infertility revealing a Rokitansky syndrome: a case report].

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a rare congenital malformation characterised by uterine agenesis and absence of the upper two-thirds of the vagina in phenotypically normal females with a 46,XX karyotype. We report the case of a 22-year-old woman presenting with primary infertility. Clinical examination revealed normal external genitalia with a shallow vaginal dimple. Pelvic ultrasound and MRI showed complete agenesis of the uterus and upper vagina, with normal ovaries. Hormonal evaluation confirmed preserved ovarian function, and karyotyping revealed a normal 46,XX profile. D…
