Carbon Dioxide Inhalation-Risks for Health or Opportunity for Physical Fitness Development?

Background: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is traditionally regarded as a metabolic by-product; however, growing evidence indicates that it plays an active regulatory role across multiple physiological systems. Acute hypercapnia elicits respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and neurocognitive responses, some of which may transiently influence exercise performance. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on CO2 inhalation in healthy individuals and critically evaluates whether controlled hypercapnia may serve as a targeted stimulus in sport and exercise contexts. Methods: A narrative …

Early Tracheoesophageal Fistula Following Tracheostomy in Severe Facial Burn with Inhalation Injury.

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a rare but devastating complication of mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy, classically described as a late sequela of prolonged airway instrumentation. Patients with severe burn injury and inhalation injury represent a uniquely vulnerable population due to airway mucosal ischemia, thermal injury, and impaired tissue healing. We report a case of fulminant posterior tracheal wall failure with early TEF formation occurring within days of tracheostomy in a 75-year-old patient with extensive full-thickness facial burns following thermal inhalation injury from…

Inhalation of hydrogen gas reduces exacerbations of acute aortic dissection in mice.

AIMS: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a life-threatening condition in which vascular inflammation contributes to disease progression and co … control gas for 24 h, and effects on AAD severity and inflammation were examined. KEY FINDINGS: H2 inhalation improved 24-h survival and spontaneous locomotor activity, while systolic blood pressure was not altered. H2 also reduced aortic rupture frequency and suppressed false lumen enlargement. In plasma, H2 inhalation significantly reduced IL-6 and G-CSF …

Haptoglobin Protects Against Increased Chlorine Inhalation Vulnerability in Sickle Cell Trait Mice.

RATIONALE: Sickle cell trait (SCT), carried by millions worldwide, is generally considered benign. However, SCT is increasingly linked to life‑threatening complications under environmental stress. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether sickle cell trait confers heightened vulnerability to oxidant inhalation injury and whether post-exposure haptoglobin mitigates injury. METHODS: Using humanized SCT (AS) and control hemoglobin (AA) mice carrying human hemoglobin knock‑in genes, we examined physiologic, biochemical, histologic, mitochondrial, and proteomic responses to chlorine (Cl₂) inhalation at conce…

Acetic Acid Inhalation-Induced Lung Injury: A Common Chemical with Underestimated Risks.

Acetic acid is widely used; however, its inhalation can cause significant respiratory harm. This paper examines its toxicological mechanisms, overlooked health risks, and the need for targeted safety measures to prevent lung injury in both domestic and occupational places.

Chronic inflammatory pain and chronic THC vapor inhalation alter midbrain neuronal activity.

In an effort to reduce reliance on opioids for the treatment of pain in the clinic, ongoing work is testing the utility of cannabinoid drugs as a potential alternative for treatment of chronic pain. We tested chronic delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) vapor inhalation effects on intrinsic and synaptic properties of ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG) neurons in male and female rats treated with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). We report that chronic THC vapor inhalation modulates intrinsic and synaptic properties of vlPAG neurons, including reductions in action potential firing rate and…

Development of a Mouse Model of Coccidioidomycosis Using an Inhalation Exposure System.

Coccidioides species are thermally dimorphic fungal pathogens that cause coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) primarily in North and South Amer … rosol route of infection, we compared the intranasal method with aerosolization using the Glass-Col Inhalation Exposure System (IES). Infection with a dose of 2 × 106 CFU/mL, nebulized in 5 mL of PBS, but not in water, was able to infect mice, albeit inconsistently, compared to intranasal challenge. Arthroconidia were detected inside the IES after the nebuli …
