Mechanisms of Horizontal Cell-to-Cell Transfer of Wolbachia spp. in Drosophila melanogaster.

Wolbachia is an intracellular endosymbiont present in most arthropod and filarial nematode species. Transmission between hosts is primarily vertical, taking place exclusively through the female germ line, although horizontal transmission has also been documented. The results of several studies indicate that Wolbachia spp. can undergo transfer between somatic and germ line cells during nematode development and in adult flies. However, the mechanisms underlying horizontal cell-to-cell transfer remain largely unexplored. Here, we establish a tractable system for probing horizontal transfer of Wol

Putting behaviors into context for vector-borne diseases: Examining behaviors that may reduce exposure to disease vectors.

Understanding why people adopt or ignore vector-borne disease (VBD) preventive measures is key to better risk assessment and control. However, little is known about why some households adopt preventive practices while others do not, which is particularly striking in this era of One Health's attention to human, environmental, and animal health. We examined what household factors are linked to practices that may reduce exposure to disease vectors, with a focus on Chagas disease (CD) and American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) vectors. We surveyed 204 households in 12 rural communities in Coclé Pr

Anti-mosquito plants as an alternative or incremental method for malaria vector control among rural communities of Bagamoyo District, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Plants represent one of the most accessible resources available for mosquito control by communities in Tanzania. However, no doc … n gathered from the literature, except for Psidium guajava, which is reported for the first time in insect control. CONCLUSION: This survey has indicated some knowledge gap among community members in managing mosquito vectors using plant. The communities need a basic health education and sensitization for effective exploitation of this valuable tool for reducin …

Correlation between ranges of leg walking angles and passive rest angles among leg types in stick insects.

Because of scaling issues, passive muscle and joint forces become increasingly important as limb size decreases.1-3 In some small limbs, passive forces can drive swing in locomotion,4,5 and antagonist passive torques help control limb swing velocity.6 In stance, minimizing antagonist muscle and joint passive forces could save energy. These considerations predict that, for small limbs, evolution would result in the angle range over which passive forces are too small to cause limb movement (called "resting-state range" in prior insect work4 and "area of neutral equilibrium" in physics and engine

The internal transcribed spacer 1 sequence polymorphism brings updates to tsetse species distribution in the northern Cameroon: Importance in planning efficient vector control.

Vector control remains one of the best strategies to prevent the transmission of trypanosome infections in humans and livestock and, thus, a good way to achieve the elimination of human African trypanosomiasis and animal African trypanosomiasis. A key prerequisite for the success of any vector control strategy is the accurate identification and correct mapping of tsetse species. In this work, we updated the tsetse fly species identification and distribution in many geographical areas in Cameroon. Tsetse flies were captured from six localities in Cameroon, and their species were morphologically

Visceral leishmaniasis on the Indian Subcontinent: Efficacy of fipronil-based cattle treatment in controlling sand fly populations is dependent on specific aspects of sand fly ecology.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a deadly disease transmitted by the sand fly Phlebotomus argentipes on the Indian subcontinent, with a promising means of vector control being orally treating cattle with fipronil-based drugs. While prior research investigating the dynamic relationship between timing of fipronil-based control schemes and the seasonality of sand flies provides insights into potential of treatment on a large scale, ecological uncertainties remain. We investigated how uncertainties associated with sand fly ecology might affect our ability to assess efficacy of fipronil-b

Repellent efficacy of DEET, MyggA, neem (Azedirachta indica) oil and chinaberry (Melia azedarach) oil against Anopheles arabiensis, the principal malaria vector in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, Anopheles arabiensis is the main vector responsible for the transmission of malaria in the country and its control mainly involves application of indoor residual spraying (IRS) and use of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs). OBJECTIVE: Although the role of repellents for reducing man-vector contact is documented in the literature, the response of An. arabiensis to repellents was not previously evaluated under field conditions in Ethiopia. METHOD: The trial was conducted in Sodere village assessing the repellent activities of four repellents, of which, two of them wer

Improving the cost-effectiveness of visual devices for the control of riverine tsetse flies, the major vectors of human African trypanosomiasis.

Control of the Riverine (Palpalis) group of tsetse flies is normally achieved with stationary artificial devices such as traps or insecticide-treated targets. The efficiency of biconical traps (the standard control device), 1×1 m black targets and small 25×25 cm targets with flanking nets was compared using electrocuting sampling methods. The work was done on Glossina tachinoides and G. palpalis gambiensis (Burkina Faso), G. fuscipes quanzensis (Democratic Republic of Congo), G. f. martinii (Tanzania) and G. f. fuscipes (Kenya). The killing effectiveness (measured as the catch per m(2) of clot

Human African trypanosomiasis: Epidemiology and control.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), or sleeping sickness, describes not one but two discrete diseases: that caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and that caused by T. b. gambiense. The Gambian form is currently a major public health problem over vast areas of central and western Africa, while the zoonotic, Rhodesian form continues to present a serious health risk in eastern and southern Africa. The two parasites cause distinct clinical manifestations, and there are significant differences in the epidemiology of the diseases caused. We discuss the differences between the diseases caused by

Development of an adaptive tsetse population management scheme for the Luke community, Ethiopia.

Since 1996, tsetse (Glossina spp.) control operations, using odor-baited traps, have been carried out in the Luke area of Gurage zone, southwestern Ethiopia. Glossina morsitans submorsitans Newstead was identified as the dominant species in the area, but the presence of Glossina fuscipes Newstead and Glossina pallidipes Austen also was recorded. Here, we refer to the combined number of these three species and report the work undertaken from October 2002 to October 2004 to render the control system more efficient by reducing the number of traps used and maintaining the previously reached levels

Rotational application of bioinsecticide with deltamethrin-An antilarval measure for the control of filarial vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Culicidae: Diptera).

A laboratory investigation was undertaken to study the cyclic usage of field recommended doses of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), Bacillus sphaericus (Bsp) and combination of Bti and Bsp (half the recommended dose of each) with deltamethrin 2.8 EC to attain better control of mosquito larvae. To understand the susceptibility status of the Culex quinquefasciatus larvae in the field, early fourth instar field collected larvae were exposed to the above treatments of biopesticides and were monitored for their persistency till 50% mortality was obtained. The larvae those survived in each t

Ecology of malaria vectors in the Americas and future direction.

The resurgence of malaria in the Americas has renewed interest in Anopheles biology. Anopheles darlingi, An. albimanus, An. nuneztovai and An. aquasalis are reconfirmed as major malaria vectors and other species are playing important roles in regional malaria transmission. Adult biting activity and larval ecology are discussed in detail. Seasonal abundance and daily biting activity of Anophelines vary considerably among species and geographically for the same species. Anopheles albimanus has the least amount of variation in biting activity over its range and An. darlingi has the greatest. All

Control of Bancroftian filariasis by integrating therapy with vector control using polystyrene beads in wet pit latrines.

In the town of Makunduchi, Zanzibar, wet pit latrines provided breeding places for Culex quinquefasciatus and there were few other mosquito breeding places available. The adult mosquito population in bedrooms was monitored for a year and found to consist almost entirely of Cx quinquefasciatus of which 2.45% carried infective larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti. It was estimated that each person received about 24,993 bites per year, of which 612 were potentially infective. After a year of baseline data collection, polystyrene beads were expanded in boiling water and applied to form floating layers o

Divergent migratory strategies along the East Asian insect flyway: A trade-off between flight power and atmospheric dependence.

Mass migration within the East Asian insect flyway is a globally significant ecological phenomenon, yet how insects with different flight capabilities utilize divergent strategies to exploit the same wind system remains a critical puzzle. We hypothesize that these strategies arise from a fundamental trade-off between active trajectory control and strategic atmospheric exploitation. To test this, we integrated long-term (11-year) field observations with atmospheric trajectory modeling to quantitatively assess the migratory performance of two species with disparate flight capacities: the orienta

Gene Expression of GqBursicon in Gynaephora qinghaiensis (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) and Its Impact on Wing Expansion.

The tanning hormone (Bursicon) is a heterodimer secreted by the insect nervous system, playing a crucial role in the process of cuticle darkening and hardening and wing expansion in insects. In this study, we knocked out the GqBurs gene using RNAi, thereby impairing the flight ability of adult males by affecting wing development, laying the groundwork for further control of the damage they cause to alpine meadows. The GqBurs gene was successfully characterized and expressed at all developmental stages of Gynaephora qinghaiensis, with higher expression in 5th instar larvae and wing primordia. I

IIS/TOR network plays an essential role in ovarian development in the pupal stage of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda.

The ovary plays a crucial role in the female reproductive system of insects and is vital for the perpetuation of insect populations. The insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling (IIS) and target of rapamycin (TOR) signaling network play a key role in controlling ovarian development and maturation during the adult stage. However, the pupal stage is a critical developmental phase in the reproductive system of holometabolous insects, and the regulatory role of the IIS/TOR network during this stage remains to be elucidated. In this study, we observed that during the pupal stage, the enlargemen

Viable Trypanosoma cruzi cultured from a dead Paratriatoma lecticularia (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) encountered in a large dog kennel environment in south Texas, USA.

Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909) is a protozoan parasite transmitted by triatomine (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) insects and is the causative agent of Chagas disease. Oral transmission of the parasite occurs through consumption of contaminated food or infected triatomines and may depend on the degree to which T. cruzi survives in triatomine abdomens. Dead triatomines may be abundant in areas with insecticide use, such as dog kennels where animals may encounter them. We attempted to culture T. cruzi from the gut material of 108 triatomines collected near dog kennels-14 found alive and 94 found dead-a

Phytochemical and Insecticidal Activity of Some Thyme Plants' Essential Oils Against Cryptoblabes gnidiella and Scirtothrips mangiferae on Mango Inflorescences.

Mango fruits are one of the strategic fruit crops in different countries that are attacked by several serious pests such as Cryptoblabes gnidiella and Scirtothrips mangiferae. Natural extracts, especially essential oils, provide several promising insecticide agents to control different insects as an alternative to synthetic insecticides. Using Clevenger-type hydrodistillation, the essential oils of five thyme plants-Thymus vulgaris, Origanum vulgare, Thymus argenteus, Thymus citriodorus, and Origanum syriacum-from Saudi Arabia and Egypt were extracted, and GC/MS analysis was performed.
