Life events and their subjective appraisal by children and adolescents in clinical high-risk states of psychosis: a cross-sectional comparison with inpatients with non-psychotic disorders and community subjects.

While childhood trauma and neglect are generally found to be increased in clinical high-risk of psychosis (CHR-P), findings on life events (LEs) are so far inconclusive, with some indication of a stress sensitization effect in CHR-P, leading to generally higher stress appraisals of LEs, and a LE-reducing effect of negative symptoms. Thus, we studied 50 LEs and their appraisals as assessed with the Munich Life Event Scale in CHR-P patients according to ultra-high risk and basic symptom criteria and age- and sex-matched clinical inpatient (ClinS) and healthy controls (GPS; each n = 112, age 8-17

Association of overgeneral autobiographical memory with personality impairment, pathological trait domains, and the borderline pattern specifier in a female psychiatric sample.

The proposed model of personality disorder in the International Classification of Diseases, 11th revision (ICD-11) comprises ratings of the severity of self and interpersonal impairment, pathological trait domains, and a borderline pattern specifier. The incremental validity of the different components of the model has primarily been studied in relation to symptoms, traits, and psychosocial functioning, whereas associations with cognitive- and identity-related factors have not yet been characterized. The present study investigated the unique associations of each component of the ICD-11 model w

Longitudinal associations between interpersonal relationship functioning and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in recently traumatized individuals: differential findings by assessment method.

BACKGROUND: The role of interpersonal relationship functioning in trauma recovery is well-established. However, much of this research has been done with cross-sectional samples, often years after trauma exposure, using self-report methodology only, and is focused on intimate relationship adjustment. METHODS: The current study investigated the longitudinal associations between interpersonal (intimate and non-intimate) relationship functioning and clinician- and self-reported posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in 151 recently (within the past 6 months) traumatized individuals. Partic…

When couples disconnect: rumination and withdrawal as maladaptive responses to everyday stress.

Previous research has highlighted the importance of examining the interpersonal context of stress and coping. How individuals in a relationship respond to one another and cope with stress together have important outcomes on both individual and dyadic levels. The current study sought to examine 2 deleterious coping responses, rumination and interpersonal withdrawal, as they relate to occupational stress and interact in the home setting. An intensive longitudinal design was employed in a sample of 87 couples in which 1 partner was working as a paramedic. Over a period of 4 consecutive work shift

Digital imaging and telemedicine as a tool for studying inflammatory conditions in the middle ear--evaluation of image quality and agreement between examiners.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate digital imaging of the tympanic membrane by telemedicine technology and study interpersonal agreement in assessing image quality. METHODS: In an open consecutive study, 64 children aged 2-16 years who attended three rural health care centres in Northern Sweden with otalgia were examined with video endoscopic photography of their tympanic membrane in a telemedical environment. One hundred and twenty-four images were stored in a central database and later assessed independently regarding image quality by an ENT specialist, a general practitioner and a registrar in general

A transdiagnostic AI-based measure of interpersonal coordination in autism and other conditions.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal coordination is a fundamental social behavior that has been shown to be reduced in autism, though less is known about other psychiatric conditions. An automated quantitative measure of interpersonal coordination would enhance assessment, diagnosis, and monitoring of treatment-related change in autism and other psychiatric conditions. We introduce and apply a novel AI-based measure ('concurrence') to quantify and compare nonverbal interpersonal coordination during naturalistic conversation in individuals with and without various psychiatric presentations. METHODS: The

Cross-sectional Study of Factors Associated With Suicide Ideation in Ontario Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide is the second leading cause of death in Canadian adolescents. The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide attempts to explain suicide etiology and proposes that feelings of perceived burdensomeness or thwarted belongingness lead to suicide ideation, but this has not been extensively studied in adolescents. This study aimed to use the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide to examine factors that may be associated with suicide ideation in adolescents. The factors of interest were school connectedness, perceived availability of support, self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, feelings of hop

Psychological and Interpersonal Factors Associated with Sexualized Drug Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review.

Chemsex-the use of specific drugs during planned sexual activity to sustain or enhance sexual functioning (Bourne et al., 2015)-is widely reported as a major public health issue among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in Western countries. Considering current evidence surrounding Chemsex, we conducted a mixed-methods systematic review regarding psychological and interpersonal factors associated with Chemsex behaviors among GBM. Publications covering Chemsex and psychological or social variables were eligible. Theoretical papers and studies solely presenting physical heal

From early family systems to internalizing symptoms: The role of emotion regulation and peer relations.

Research has demonstrated the importance of early family characteristics, such as the quality of caregiving, on children's later mental health. Information is, however, needed about the role of more holistic family systems and specific child-related socioemotional mechanisms. In this study, we conceptualize families as dynamic family system types, consisting of both marital and parenting trajectories over the transition to parenthood. First, we examine how early family system types predict children's anxiety, depression, peer exclusion, and emotion regulation. Second, we test whether couples'

Hypnotherapy: the salutogenic solution to dealing with phobias.

Evidence suggests that around a quarter of women can suffer from an intense fear of giving birth (tocophobia). This can be costly to these women in terms of enduring negative effects of the increased use of medical interventions associated with tocophobia. Other phobias, such as white coat hypertension, can also be problematic in pregnancy. This article describes the establishment of a hypnotherapy service within the antenatal day assessment unit at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and recounts a recent case study in which the use of hypnotherapy was employed to help Rebecca, a white coat h

Dissecting first-year students' perceptions of health profession groups: potential barriers to interprofessional education.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that health profession students enter interprofessional education (IPE) programs with negative perceptions of health disciplines other than their own, which could serve as possible barriers to engagement with interprofessional principles. Yet, past studies have not fully dissected these perceptions, nor have they examined how these perceptions may contrast with how students view their own future profession. METHODS/FINDINGS: A total of 638 students from six different health profession training programs completed surveys assessing their perceptions/stere

Practical tips for sexual counseling and psychotherapy in premature ejaculation.

INTRODUCTION: A number of milestones in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) have occurred over the past five decades, including the development of various behavioral and cognitive techniques as well as pharmacotherapies that modify neurophysiological processes involved in ejaculation. Nevertheless, the notion that sexual responses such as PE are influenced by physiological, psychobehavioral, cultural, and relationship factors is as valid now as it was 50 years ago, and therefore, interventions should consider all such domains in the development of effective treatment strategies. AIM:

Intent attributions and aggression: a study of children and their parents.

This research aimed to further clarify the relationship between children's self-reported hostile intent attributions (for ambiguous instrumental or relational provocations) and peer-reported aggression (physical and relational) in 500 fourth-grade children. In addition, we examined whether parents' intent attributions might predict children's intent attributions and aggression. Both parents (mothers and fathers) in 393 families completed intent attribution questionnaires. Results showed, consistent with past research, that boys' instrumental intent attributions were related to physical aggress

Social interpretation bias and generalized social phobia: the influence of developmental experiences.

Patients with generalized social phobia (N = 42) and non-phobic community controls (N = 42) engaged in a social interaction with an experimental assistant whose behavior was used to create either a positive or an ambiguous social environment. Participants then rated their own performance and their partner's behavior. As a group, social phobic patients displayed negatively biased self-judgments, but failed to display biased social interpretations. Among the social phobia group, a social developmental history marked by parental hostility was associated with negative interpretations of partner be

Risk profiles of adolescent girls who were victims of dating violence.

The prevalence of dating violence, as well as its relationship to potential risk factors, was examined among a nationally representative sample of 9th-through 12th-grade U.S. females (N = 7,824) who completed the 1999 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The dependent variable was physical dating violence; the independent variables were violence, suicide, substance use, and sexual risk behavior. Unadjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were examined, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the most significant risk factors. It was found that nearly one in

Pushing the wrong buttons: men's and women's attitudes toward online and offline infidelity.

Despite current researchers' interest in the study of online sexual addiction, there is a dearth of research available on what constitutes online infidelity. This paper attempts to redress this balance by comparing 1,117 participants' attitudes toward online and offline acts of infidelity. A factor analysis was carried out that yielded three components of infidelity: sexual infidelity, emotional infidelity, and pornography. More importantly, this study revealed that online acts of betrayal do not fall into a discrete category of their own. A MANOVA was performed and revealed a statistically si

The antecedents and implications of interracial anxiety.

Drawing on previous theorizing from both the prejudice and social anxiety literatures, a model of the antecedents and implications of intergroup anxiety is offered. It is argued that a lack of positive previous experiences with outgroup members creates negative expectancies about interracial interactions, which result in intergroup anxiety. This anxiety is posited to result in heightened hostility toward outgroup members and a desire to avoid interacting with outgroup members. Study 1 examined White participants' responses to interacting with Black people using a range of self-report measures;
