Laparoscopic treatment of colo-colic intussusception secondary to a lipomatous polyp.

INTRODUCTION: Colo-colic intussusception is extremely rare in adults and few cases have been described secondary to a lypomatous polyp. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 50-year old man with chronic abdominal pain who was diagnosed a colo-colic intussusception secondary to a lipoma of the left colon. The patient underwent laparoscopic resection of the splenic flexure without reduction, which occurred spontaneously after induction of the pneumoperitoneum, and final histology confirmed a submucosal lipoma with no evidence of malignancy. CONCLUSION: The traditional treatment of choice for a

Primary perivascular epithelioid cell tumor in the rectum: a case report and review of the literature.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare collection of tumors arising in a wide array of anatomic locations. It is characterized by the presence of a peculiar population of myomelanocytic marker-positive perivascular epithelioid cells, and is commonly detected in the uterus. The colorectal area is an uncommon site for primary PEComa. In this study, we describe a 17-year-old patient presenting with a rectal polyp. Histologically, the tumor consisted of sheets of round to polygonal epithelioid cells with clear and granular cytoplasm, and a prominent capillary network. Some of the t

Lymphoid hyperplasia of the large intestine: a case report with immunohistochemical and gene analysis.

A case of lymphoid hyperplasia arising in the large intestine of a 54-year-old woman is described. Barium enema X-ray and colonoscopic examination revealed multiple small polyps in the right side of the colon. Pathological findings from forceps biopsy revealed similar features to a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. A right hemicolectomy with mesenteric lymph node dissection was carried out. Histological sectioning demonstrated hypertrophic lymphoid follicles with well-formed germinal centers. Occasionally, lymphocytes infiltrated the crypts, in a way similar to that found in l

[Comparison of gastric mucosal lesions in high and low incidence areas of gastric cancer--analysis of 3146 operated gastric specimens and 112 autopsied samples. National Gastric Cancer Pathology Cooperative Group].

Gastric mucosal lesions, including 3146 gastric specimens resected for various benign diseases and 112 autopsied samples, in both high and low incidence areas of gastric cancer in China were analysed and compared. The results showed that, in high and low incidence areas of gastric cancer, the detection rate was 59.96% and 52.02% for chronic atrophic gastritis, 60.60% and 52.76% for intestinal metaplasia, 37.60% and 22.97% for atypical hyperplasia, 0.44% and 0.13% for microcarcinoma and small carcinoma of the stomach, 2.52% and 0.79% for gastric polyp. The data suggest that a positive correlati

A rare cause of recurrent vomiting: large polypoid duodenal gastric heterotopia. A case report with a focused review of the paediatric literature.

Gastric heterotopia (GH) is a developmental anomaly characterized by the presence of ectopic gastric mucosa outside its normal location. It is rare in the duodenum, particularly as a large polypoid lesion in children. We report the case of a 12-year-old boy who developed recurrent postprandial nausea and vomiting at 11 years of age. Imaging and endoscopy revealed a large partially obstructing polypoid mass in the distal duodenum. Technetium-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy demonstrated ectopic gastric mucosa. The lesion was successfully removed through a two-stage endoscopic resection, leading t

Caecal lipoma causing acute appendicitis-a case report.

Colonic lipoma is a rare mesenchymal tumour of the gastrointestinal tract that is composed of well-differentiated adipose tissue (1). The commonest site of colonic lipomas is the ascending colon (45%), followed by the sigmoid colon (30.3%), descending colon (15.2%), and transverse colon (9.1%) (2). Lipomas of the large intestine represent the third most common benign tumours after hyperplastic and adenomatous polyps (3). They arise from the submucosa in ~90% of cases, but occasionally extend into the muscularis propria; up to 10% are subserosal (3). Colonic lipomas >2 cm may occasionally cause

[Three cases of enteroenteric intussusception examined by three-dimensional computed tomography enteroclysis].

Three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) enteroclysis or virtual enteroscopy is a novel technique to explore the entire small bowel using a modified protocol of virtual colonoscopy by inflating the small bowel with air. In our hospital, the procedure is performed routinely for cases with suspected gross lesions. We performed 3D CT enteroclysis for three cases with enteroenteric intussusception bowel. The lesions associated with intussusception were identified, single-incision laparoscopic surgery was performed, and diagnoses of lipoma and Peutz-Jeghers polyp were made in two cases. 3D CT

Diagnosis and treatment of intestinal intussusception in adults: a rare experience for surgeons.

AIM: We evaluated the aetiological factors, diagnoses and treatment outcomes of adult cases of invagination of the intestine, or intussusception. We elucidated the role of ultrasonography (USG), computed tomography (CT) and other techniques in the diagnosis of such cases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients with sufficient medical data, all of whom were followed-up and treated for intussusception at Safa Hospital, General Surgery Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey, between July 2008 and December 2013, were enrolled. RESULTS: The site of intussusception was the small bowel in five cases. The aetiopathol

A rare cause of ileus: invagination due to ectopic pancreas.

INTRODUCTION: Invagination is seen rarely as a cause of ileus in adults. The cause of invagination in children differs from that in adults. In adults it is mostly due to organic lesions (tumour). CASE REPORT: In a 49 years old patient, with 3 months of intermittant abdominal pain, radiologic investigations suspected a of small bowel tumour. The patient was operated on. At exploration, there was an ileo-ileal invagination on the terminal ileum over 40 cm distance A totally necrosed ileum segment was resected and an end-to-end anastomosis was performed. Inside the excised ileal loop their was a

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the esophagus.

The case of a 76-year-old woman with a submucosal tumor of the esophagus, whose principal symptoms were dysphagia and epigastric/retrosternal pain, is reported here. Endoscopy, barium swallow and a CAT scan all pointed to extramucosal localization. The lesion was located in the lower esophagus lying on the stomach fundus. An ulcer in the region of the cardia complicated the tumor. Two sets of conventional biopsies failed to detect malignancy, only inflammation and intestinal metaplasia were seen in the specimens of the mucosa surrounding the ulcer. The endoscopic ultrasonographic findings were

The role of angiotensin II in cardiovascular disease-induced cancer growth.

BACKGROUND: The higher incidence of cancer in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) has historically been explained by shared risk fact … eatment, or when MC38 tumor cells with low AT1 levels were used. ANGII also increased the number of intestinal polyps in APCmin mice, even at a low dose that did not induce LV hypertrophy or cardiac fibrosis. Lastly, an analysis of publicly available cancer databases showed that AT1 gene copy number variation is increased in most human cancer lines and tumors. CON …

Ileo-ileal intussusception secondary to a Peutz-Jeghers hamartomatous polyp in an infant.

We report the case of ileo-ileal intussusception secondary to a Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) hamartomatous polyp in a male infant. The patient presented with non-bilious vomiting and a single episode of passing blood in his stool. An upper gastrointestinal contrast study showed proximal bowel obstruction. At laparotomy, ileo-ileal intussusception was identified with a papillary mass acting as a lead point. The mass was resected, and a primary anastomosis was performed. The patient recovered well and was discharged on postoperative day 5. Histological assessment diagnosed a PJS hamartoma. The p

Clinical characteristics of non-ampullary duodenal polyps in the elderly and the outcomes of endoscopic mucosal resection.

At present, there are no reports on non-ampullary polyps of the duodenum (NAPDs) in the elderly. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinicopathological features of NAPDs in elderly and non-elderly patients to explore the efficacy and safety of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of NAPDs in the elderly.A total of 110 patients underwent EMR of NAPDs between April 2016 and December 2019. The shape, location, size, postoperative complications, and histopathological types of NAPDs were compared between the elderly group (n = 44) and the non-elderly group (n = 66).Sessile type was the most com

A pedunculated polyp-shaped small-bowel lymphangioma causing gastrointestinal bleeding and treated by double-balloon enteroscopy.

We report a rare case of a small-bowel lymphangioma causing massive gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding that we successfully diagnosed and treated using double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE). An 81-year-old woman suffering from repeated GI bleeding of unknown origin underwent a capsule endoscopy at a previous hospital. She was suspected of having bleeding from the jejunum, and was referred to our department for diagnosis and treatment. An oral DBE revealed a 20 mm × 10 mm, regularly surfaced, white to yellowish, elongated, pedunculated jejunal polyp with small erosions at 10 cm distal to the ligament of

An unusual cause of acute pancreatitis?

OBJECTIVE: The role of traditional Chinese medicine in cancer treatment is becoming increasingly pivotal. Tupistra chinensis Baker (STCB), a member of the Lily family, is an herbal plant with antipyretic and detoxifying properties. It has also been used to alleviate abdominal distension. Previous studies have shown that saponin extracted from STCB inhibits proliferation of hepatic carcinoma (HCC) cells. The present study aimed to explore the mechanisms implicated in the regulation of HCC progression by STCB. METHODS: The impact of STCB on HepG2 hepatoblastoma cell proliferation in vitro was e
