A case of mixed infection of Salmonella (type C2) and Parasarcophaga crassipalpis (an intestinal myiasis) in a two-year-old girl is reported. A girl after dining in a restaurant developed typical Salmonella food-poisoning symptoms. Stool culture showed both Salmonella and fly larvae. This paper is to report a first case of this fly larvae infection and to review the recent trends of food-poisoning in Japan.

A patient with acute intestinal obstruction due to unrecognized gastric phytobezoars is presented. There was no history of prior gastric or other abdominal surgery. At laparotomy several fragments of rubbery material were discovered obstructing the ileocecal valve. Exploration of the upper gastrointestinal tract revealed two partially fragmented bezoars in the stomach which were removed through a gastrotomy. After surgery the patient recounted the ingestion of persimmons a few weeks before the onset of her symptoms. A review of the literature reveals bezoars to be an infrequent, although not a

An algorithm for the evaluation of a newborn with an intestinal obstruction was formulated. It is hoped that this will aid the practicing surgeon in rapidly and safely arriving at the proper diagnosis so that appropriate therapy can be promptly instituted.

The predominant site of bleeding intestinal angiodysplasia in elderly patients will be the cecum or ascending colon, but recent experience in the Yale-Affiliated Gastroenterology Program in 1 year indicates that elderly patients may have bleeding acquired angiodysplasia (AD) confined to the small intestine only. A review of the literature confirms that symptomatic small intestinal AD is infrequent and occurs at an average age of 32 years in some series. Five patients with symptomatic small intestinal AD diagnosed during 1981 at Yale were older, with an average of 62 years. Three of the five ca

Primary malignant tumors of the small intestine are uncommon. The average annual incidence rate over a period of 30 years in Saskatchewan was 0.7 and 0.6 per 100,000 for male and females, respectively. The 209 patients who comprise the series represent 1.6% of the total number who had gastrointestinal cancers over the same period. The distribution of the tumors by site and histologic type is described. Both carcinoid and adenocarcinomatous tumors of the small intestine are associated with a high incidence of primary malignant neoplasms in other sites (17.0 and 20.3%, respectively). One patient

A survey of intestinal parasitosis was conducted in Martinique by INSERM in 1978. The survey used a stratified sample of 823 households from the general population. The most prevalent parasitosis are: schistosomiasis 19%; ancylostomiasis 18%; trichuriasis 37%; ascaridiasis 7%; strongiloidiasis 3%. 70% of the 5 to 15 age group carries at least 1 parasite. The prevalence of trichuriasis, ascaridiasis and giardiasis is greatest in the 5 to 15 age group, Ancylostomiasis concerns mostly the 15 to 30 age group. Schistosomiasis, was most prevalent in adults over 30 years of age. Prevalence of parasit

Coloscopic small bowel enema, a new diagnostic method, permits small and large intestinal investigation in one session. A coloscope is required equipped with a circular mounted balloon at the distal end. The endoscope is placed into coecum using the conventional technique (coloscopy). After intubation of the ileocoecal valve the balloon is inflated in the terminal ileum. This prevents reflux of the contrast medium and methyl-cellulose solution which are instilled into the small bowel through the endoscope instrumentation bore. Double-contrast investigation of the small bowel is particularly su

A worm-conglomerate in cases of ascariasis may cause an intestinal obstruction. The worms can be demonstrated as irregular oblong shadows or nodular thickenings. Level formation in the intestine must not be found because of filling intestinal loops with worms.

Although intestinal obstruction from intra-abdominal adhesions is a relatively common surgical emergency, the vast majority of adhesions are harmless and may be protective or even life-saving. The causes of intestinal adhesions are presented, and various methods advocated to prevent adhesions are discussed. The surgeon is advised to reduce unnecessary adhesion formation by meticulous surgical technique, control those adhesions which inevitably form to obtain their beneficial effects, and to avoid the risk of subsequent obstruction.

We evaluated phospholipase activity in the intestine of rats and other species. Phospholipase activity was assayed by a surface barostat technique or an egg yolk titration system. Mucosal activity was found only by the surface barostat technique with phosphatidylglycerol as substrate; it was not found with phosphatidylcholine as substrate in assays by either technique. In gut luminal fluid activity was found when both phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol were used as substrate in assays by the surface barostat technique, and phosphatidylcholine as substrate yielded activity in egg yolk
