Morphological skills among native Arab kindergarteners with developmental language disorders.

This study tested morphological skills among 14 native Arab kindergarteners with developmental language disorder (DLD) (age; 5.51 ± 0.95, 10 boys and 4 girls) and fifteen kindergarteners with typical language development (TD) (age; 5.49 ± 0.37, 7 boys and 8 girls). The participants completed two tasks designed to assess the identification and production of inflectional morphology skills in Arabic. In the identification task, the participants were asked to choose between two alternatives of pseudowords, the one that corresponds to a conventional inflection in the language, based on the instruct…

LSC-54: A landmark-based dataset for colombian sign language.

According to the World Health Organization, hearing disabilities are increasing globally, highlighting the need to support the deaf community. In countries such as Colombia, access to sign language education remains limited. Recent advances in Computer Vision have proven effective in promoting sign language learning through real-time interaction. In response to this need, a time-series dataset was developed to represent signs from Colombian Sign Language (CSL), including 11 colors, 33 courtesy phrases, and the numbers 1-10. This dataset served as input for the development of a technological to…

Language, economic and gender disparities widen the scientific productivity gap.

Scientific communities need to understand and eliminate barriers that prevent people with diverse backgrounds from contributing to and participating in science. However, the combined impact of individuals' linguistic, economic, and gender backgrounds on their scientific productivity is poorly understood. Using a survey of 908 environmental scientists, we show that being a woman is associated with up to a 45% reduction in the number of English-language publications, compared to men. Being a woman, a non-native English speaker, and from a low-income country is associated with up to a 70% reducti…

Residential exposure to noise, green space, and children's language acquisition.

BACKGROUND: Noise pollution has been linked to impaired development in a variety of language-related skills in laboratory settings. While studies have focused on school environments, residential noise exposure's impact remains underexplored. METHODS: We used multilevel regression models to examine the association between noise exposure measured using deterministic noise modelling and language development in kindergarten-aged children in Vancouver, Canada, between April 1, 2000 and December 31, 2005, measured through a questionnaire completed by kindergarten teachers (the Early Development Ins…

Joint Engagement and Socially Motivated Language in Young Autistic Children.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the social motivation underlying young autistic children's language and time spent in engagement states [adapted from Bottema-Beutel et al., (2014) and ranging from less social to more social] during interactions with parents. We examined (1) autistic children's time and words per minute (WPM) in each engagement state; (2) the relationship between time in engagement states and the social motivation (SM) of utterances; and (3) the effect of the Pathways intervention on time in engagement states. METHODS: This secondary analysis used video recordings of 10-min n…

Adapting language models for mental health analysis on social media.

In recent years, there has been a growing research interest focused on identifying traces of mental disorders through social media analysis. These disorders significantly impair millions of individuals' cognitive and behavioral functions worldwide. Our study aims to advance the understanding of four prevalent mental disorders: Anorexia, Depression, Gambling, and Self-harm. We present a comprehensive framework designed for the domain adaptation of models to analyze and identify signs of these conditions on social media posts. The language models' adapting strategy consisted of three key stages.…

Comparing psychedelic and meditation experience reports with natural language processing.

Psychedelics and meditation are known for their potential to induce personally meaningful and even transformative experiences. However, it is unclear how similar these experiences are, or how they differ from each other. This explorative study used natural language processing (NLP) methods to compare reports of personally meaningful subjective experiences facilitated by either psychedelic substances or meditation. Participants (N = 197) wrote open-ended narrative reports about their most meaningful experience facilitated either with psychedelics (n = 134) or meditation (n = 63). These reports …

Second Language Teachers' Knowledge and Beliefs About Dyslexia: Turkish Context.

Dyslexia is one of the most common language-based learning disabilities. Teaching a second language (L2) to dyslexic students is still a contested issue among educators. Teachers' knowledge and beliefs about dyslexia play an important role in the successful inclusion of these students in L2 classrooms. The current study investigated the knowledge and beliefs of Turkish second language teachers (SLTs) about dyslexia. Data were collected from 150 participants using the Knowledge and Beliefs About Developmental Dyslexia Scale (KBDDS). The findings revealed that Turkish SLTs possess a moderate lev…

Speech and Language Disorders Associated With 7q31 Deletions Implicating FOXP2.

Some 7q31 deletions encompass FOXP2, a gene long associated with speech and language disorders. Intragenic pathogenic FOXP2 variants cause FOXP2-related speech and language disorder, which has been well characterized in the literature. Conversely, the phenotype associated with 7q31 deletions is neglected. Here we characterize the phenotype of eight individuals (4 males) with 7q31 deletions (median age 4 years, 3 months, range 1-32 years). Deletion size ranged from 6.8 to 15.2 Mb. All had protracted speech and language milestones, and those with larger deletions had little to no speech. All ver…

CLCN4 -Related Neurodevelopmental Condition: Characterization of Speech and Language Abilities.

Speech and language difficulties are a core feature of the CLCN4-related neurodevelopmental condition, but these have not been well described. Here we systematically phenotype speech and language in 13 participants (10 female, aged 1 year 10 months-41 years 10 months) with pathogenic CLCN4 variants (12 missense de novo, 1 premature stop codon maternal inheritance). Speech, language, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods were examined. Expressive and receptive language conditions were highly penetrant (12/13, 92%). Eight participants were minimally verbal but used a range…

Artificial Intelligence-Based Large Language Models Can Facilitate Patient Education.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly popular, with patients and families more likely to utilize LLM when conducting internet-based research about scoliosis. For this reason, it is vital to understand the abilities and limitations of this technology in disseminating accurate medical information. We used an expert panel to compare LLM-generated and professional society-authored answers to frequently asked questions about pediatric scoliosis. METHODS: We used three publicly available LLMs to generate answers to 15 frequently asked questi…

Subcortical correlates of developmental language disorder: more than the neostriatum.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects receptive and expressive language skills. In contrast to the wealth of evidence on acquired language disorders, we understand relatively little about the neural underpinnings of DLD. A recent meta-analysis across different types of structural brain analyses in DLD highlighted consistent anatomical differences in the anterior striatum, with other subcortical structures relatively spared. These findings are consistent with predictions from the procedural circuit deficit hypothesis (PCDH), namely that the a…

Large language models for dermatological image interpretation - a comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: Interpreting skin findings can be challenging for both laypersons and clinicians. Large language models (LLMs) offer accessible decision support, yet their diagnostic capabilities for dermatological images remain underexplored. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of LLMs based on image interpretation of common dermatological diseases. METHODS: A total of 500 dermatological images, encompassing four prevalent skin conditions (psoriasis, vitiligo, erysipelas and rosacea), were used to compare seven multimodal LLMs (GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini 1.5 Flash, C…

Merlin: A Vision Language Foundation Model for 3D Computed Tomography.

Over 85 million computed tomography (CT) scans are performed annually in the US, of which approximately one quarter focus on the abdomen. Given the current shortage of both general and specialized radiologists, there is a large impetus to use artificial intelligence to alleviate the burden of interpreting these complex imaging studies while simultaneously using the images to extract novel physiological insights. Prior state-of-the-art approaches for automated medical image interpretation leverage vision language models (VLMs) that utilize both the image and the corresponding textual radiology …

Deaf children, home language environments, and reciprocal-contingent family interactions.

Engaged communication between mother and a child in their early developmental stages is one of the predictors of children's development of higher-order thinking skills. For deaf children, this engaged communication between mother and child hinges on the home language environment (HLE) being fully accessible to the child. This research uses agogical phenomenology in exploring the lived experiences of participants' HLE where sign language is used, with particular focus on the opportunities for extended discourse. Data were collected via semistructured interviews with the deaf children and their …
