[Learned helplessness and depression in the aged. A study of the concept of Seligman's depression in the old age home].

Seligman's concept of "learned helplessness" is examined with a sample of rest-home residents. A semi-structured interview is used to assess attributions in the dimensions of internality, stability and generality for past, present, and future life-events. Interrelations of these attributions with depression and age-related self-esteem are investigated. According to Seligman's model elderly subjects with high scores in depression and age-related self-esteem tend to attribute negative life-events as internal, stable and global. Some other assumptions of the model of "learned helplessness" could

Stress levels and health status of victims of a natural disaster.

Bereaved, property loss, and control groups (N = 155) were compared 11 months after the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens using standardized instruments and structured interviews. It was hypothesized that the greater the loss the greater the stress and the poorer the health. Bereaved subjects reported significantly higher levels of stress and lower levels of mental health, but not physical health. Persons who lost their permanent homes reported high rates of stress, but did not report significantly higher levels of depression, somatization, or poorer physical health. Conceptual and methodolo

Addictive behaviors and life problems before and after behavioral treatment of problem drinkers.

The broader impact of a behavioral self-control training intervention focusing on the reduction of alcohol consumption was examined in a sample of 93 problem drinkers (55 male). Individual life problems were assessed via the method of goal attainment scaling before and after treatment and at 3-6 months, 12 months and 24 months following termination. Alcohol and drug use, smoking and weight were also evaluated. At intake, women were more likely than men to be unmarried, married to a problem drinking spouse, or taking psychoactive prescription medication but less likely to be using illicit drugs

Benzodiazepine prescription to middle-aged women: it is done indiscriminately by family physicians?

It has been frequently suggested that physicians' indiscriminate prescribing has caused the high level of patient use of benzodiazepines. To determine whether this was true at Ottawa Civic Hospital's Family Medicine Centre, patient charts of women aged 45 to 65-the age-sex group that received the highest number of new prescriptions for diazepam (Valium) or oxazepam (Serax) - were studied. Middle-aged women who received a new prescription for one of these drugs visited the office significantly more often, had more marital problems, and experienced significantly more life crisis situation than a

The value of reconstruction in adult psychoanalysis.

Reconstruction is clinically valuable for the patient and fundamental for the analyst. The analyst will inevitably use reconstruction in order to comprehend the patient and to understand how that adult has remained a disturbed child with that particular psychopathology. Although not necessarily specified, reconstruction remains a very important dimension of psychoanalytic technique that is regaining analytic attention. After reviewing reasons for the shift of attention away from reconstruction, the signifcance of reconstruction is emphasized for restoring personality continuity and cohesion an

Test of the reward/circadian rhythm dysregulation model of risk for bipolar spectrum disorders at a micro time scale using multilevel moderated mediation.

Two theories, the social zeitgeber theory and the reward theory, have been proposed to explain the onset of bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs), highlighting the roles of disrupted sleep-wake rhythms and hypersensitivity to reward in BSDs. This study tested a component of the integrated reward/circadian rhythm dysregulation model of BSDs by examining how reward-relevant life events predict affective symptoms via social rhythm disruption (SRD) in young adults (N = 145) with high- or moderate-reward sensitivity across 20-days of ecological momentary assessment. Significant interaction effects were

Impact of young adult life transitions on adult mental health problems: a propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems commonly persist from childhood to adulthood. This study tested whether young adult life transitions can improve adult mental health symptoms after adjusting for childhood mental health symptoms. METHODS: The analysis uses data from the prospective, representative Great Smoky Mountains Study. Life transitions (e.g., high school completion, partnering, parenthood, and living independently) were assessed up to three times in young adulthood (ages 18 to 26; 3,241 observations). A cumulative variable counted the number of young adult transitions. Emotional, subs

Development of the Event-focused Repetitive Thoughts Questionnaire (ERTQ): A tool for assessing cognitive responses to stressful life events.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment Disorder (AjD) is a prevalent condition characterized in the ICD-11 by two core symptom clusters: preoccupations and failure to adapt. Preoccupations have been proposed as key mechanisms driving the development and maintenance of AjD. However, existing tools for assessing preoccupations are brief and limited in scope, providing insufficient detail for clinical application. This study aimed to develop and validate a more comprehensive questionnaire to assess preoccupations: the Event-focused Repetitive Thoughts Questionnaire (ERTQ). METHOD: The ERTQ was examined in two s

Interaction of both positive and negative daily-life experiences with FKBP5 haplotype on psychosis risk.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research on the interaction of both positive and negative daily-life environments with stress-related genetic variants on psychotic experiences (PEs) and negative affect (NA) across the extended psychosis phenotype. This study examined whether the FK506 binding protein 51 (FKBP5) variability moderates the association of positive and negative experiences in the moment with PEs and NA in participants with incipient psychosis and their nonclinical counterparts. METHODS: A total of 233 nonclinical and 86 incipient psychosis participants were prompted for a 1-week peri

On Occasion of the COVID-19 Pandemic - One of the Most Important Dilemma: Vaccinate or Not?

Probably in the history of medicine, doctors were not as united as they are today, in that fight against COVID-19, when the pandemic spread incredibly fast - from East to West, from North to South. The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have unprecedented and unforeseeable consequences, from those on a worldwide/global level to those at the local level - at the level of local communities and families, and individuals (and not just humans, but all other living beings), of which the future will testify in various ways. The consequences will be political, economic, social, but probably to the greates

Neglected tropical disease as a 'biographical disruption': Listening to the narratives of affected persons to develop integrated people centred care in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Integrated disease management, disability and inclusion (DMDI) for NTDs is increasingly prioritised. There is limited evidence on the effectiveness of integrated DMDI from the perspective of affected individuals and how this varies by differing axes of inequality such as age, gender, and disability. We used narrative methods to consider how individuals' unique positions of power and privilege shaped their illness experience, to elucidate what practical and feasible steps could support integrated DMDI in Liberia and beyond. METHODS: We purposively selected 27 participants affected
