[The influence of the feeding type on the concentration of trace elements in the hair of infants].

The aim of this study was to assess hair magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc levels in breast-fed and formula-fed infants. Our findings showed that concentration of the assayed macro- and trace elements, except copper, were higher in breast-fed children and declined with age, faster in formula-fed children. The frequent occurrence of magnesium deficiency indicates that pregnant women should receive magnesium supplementation.

Pre-eclampsia during pregnancy and cardiovascular disease later in life: the case for a risk group.

INTRODUCTION: Women with pre-eclampsia (PE) have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) later in life. This association might reflect an effect of pre-eclampsia on mechanisms inducing a higher risk of CVD or the presence of a group at risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The possibility that women with a magnesium deficiency might constitute a risk group was examined using published evidence form investigations on PE and CVD. RESULTS: Available data strongly suggest that a magnesium deficiency is a major risk factor for both PE and for CVD disease later in life. CONCLUSIONS: Magnesium ho…

Magnesium status, serum HDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein A-1 levels.

To determine the relationship between low magnesium status and lipids, we divided 27 patients with microscopic hematuria and normal renal function into two groups according to magnesium retention, as measured by a magnesium-loading test, and compared their serum lipid and apolipoproteins. Patients with low magnesium status (n = 7) had significantly lower levels of cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein A-1 than those with normal magnesium status (n = 20); however, there were no significant differences between the groups in serum concentrations of magnesium and apolipoprotein B. These

Microvasculopathy and soft tissue calcification in mice are governed by fetuin-A, magnesium and pyrophosphate.

Calcifications can disrupt organ function in the cardiovascular system and the kidney, and are particularly common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Fetuin-A deficient mice maintained against the genetic background DBA/2 exhibit particularly severe soft tissue calcifications, while fetuin-A deficient C57BL/6 mice remain healthy. We employed molecular genetic analysis to identify risk factors of calcification in fetuin-A deficient mice. We sought to identify pharmaceutical therapeutic targets that could be influenced by dietary of parenteral supplementation. We studied the progeny

Cardiac Dysrhythmias and Neurological Dysregulation: Manifestations of Profound Hypomagnesemia.

Magnesium is the second most common intracellular cation and serves as an important metabolic cofactor to over 300 enzymatic reactions throu … thophysiology, diagnosis, and management of severe hypomagnesemia and emphasize the implications of magnesium deficiency in the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. Furthermore, this case highlights the importance of having high vigilance for hypomagnesemia in the appropriate clinical setting.

The Connection Between Magnesium and Heart Health: Understanding Its Impact on Cardiovascular Wellness.

Magnesium is a crucial mineral that supports various enzymatic processes in the body. It plays a vital role in maintaining vascular, metabolic, and electrical homeostasis, making it an important factor for cardiovascular health. Magnesium is also involved in oxidative and inflammatory responses. Low levels of magnesium are associated with several cardiovascular issues, including arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and abnormal lipid levels. This suggests that a deficiency in magnesium could be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is a major publi

Mononuclear cell magnesium content remains unchanged in various hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Serum magnesium levels, as well as magnesium content of red blood cells and peripheral mononuclear cells, were examined in 31 pregnant women … y. These changes were not statistically significant. The results do not support the hypothesis that magnesium deficiency is involved in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia.

Status of intracellular and extracellular magnesium concentration in patients with cardiac syndrome X.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to clarify the differences of intracellular and extracellular magnesium levels in patients with cardiac syndro … rocytes than group B (3.7 +/- 1.4 vs. 5.6 +/- 1.3 fg/cell, p < 0.05), demonstrating the presence of magnesium deficiency in group A. There were no significant differences in the serum concentration of magnesium between groups A and B (0.87 +/- 0.23 vs. 0.83 +/- 0.15 mmol/l). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the intracellular magnesium level decreased in pati …

Auto-immune complications of D-penicillamine--a possible result of zinc and magnesium depletion and of pyridoxine inactivation.

Long-term high-dosage penicillamine treatment of patients with advanced stages of diseases with autoimmune components has resulted in very few adverse reactions in a series of over 50 such patients also given selected nutrients: pyridoxine, zinc and magnesium (which penicillamine inactivates or chelates), and vitamins B1, B12, and E (which have sulfhydryl-protective activity). The patients on this regimen have been essentially free of the side effects that occur in about a third of patients treated with penicillamine without such supplements. Reports of myasthenia gravis--a disease with abnorm

Do intracellular, extracellular or urinary magnesium concentrations predict renal retention of magnesium in critically ill patients?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Magnesium disorders are common in hospitalized patients. In patients with low or normal magnesium, the intravenous magnesium loading test has been demonstrated to be a sensitive test to assess magnesium deficiency in critically ill patients. However, it is more time consuming and more difficult than the measurement of intracellular or extracellular magnesium concentrations. This study evaluated whether erythrocyte, plasma and urinary magnesium concentrations predict renal magnesium retention measured by th magnesium loading test. METHODS: One-hundred-and-three intens…

Magnesium Ion: A New Switch in Tumor Treatment.

The magnesium ion is an essential cation in the human body and participates in numerous physiological activities. A deficiency in magnesium ions is closely associated with tumor development, and supplementation with magnesium ions has been shown to partially inhibit tumor growth. However, the specific mechanisms by which magnesium ions suppress tumor proliferation remain unclear. Currently, studies have revealed that mitochondria may serve as a crucial intermediate link in the regulation of tumors by magnesium ions. Mitochondria might intervene in the proliferation and invasion of tumor cells

Micronutrient levels in the cord blood of term neonates and its association with oxidative stress and neonatal anthropometry: a cross sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The key roles of micronutrients are centered on their catalytic functions in chemical reactions and their structural support for significant molecules, such as enzymes and hormones. Micronutrient deficiencies and oxidative stress have been linked to low birth weight. We aimed to study the relationships of cord blood zinc, magnesium, copper and iron and the oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) with neonatal anthropometry. METHODS: We enrolled sixty-four term neonates born via vaginal delivery. Micronutrients and MDA levels were estimated from the cord blood. Birth weight

Dental phenotype in Jalili syndrome due to a c.1312 dupC homozygous mutation in the CNNM4 gene.

Jalili syndrome denotes a recessively inherited combination of an eye disease (cone-rod dystrophy) and a dental disorder (amelogenesis imperfecta), which is caused by mutations in the CNNM4 gene. Whereas the ophthalmic consequences of these mutations have been studied comprehensively, the dental phenotype has obtained less attention. A defective transport of magnesium ions by the photoreceptors of the retina is assumed to account for the progressive visual impairment. Since magnesium is also incorporated in the mineral of dental hard tissues, we hypothesized that magnesium concentrations in de
