Three Dimensional Osteometric Analysis of Mandibular Symmetry and Morphological Consistency in Cats.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe a number of anatomical reference points which can be used to measure mandibular morphology and assess the degree of mandibular symmetry in a group of normal cats. Comparisons were then made between cats to evaluate correlations between morphological measurements and degree of inter-cat variation. This will provide data valuable evaluating and developing techniques for caudal mandibular fracture repair. Methods: Twenty-seven mixed breed cats (26 Domestic Shorthaired and 1 Domestic Longhaired) with no history of head trauma, intact undamaged mand

Reconstruction of the bony chin using sagittal split osteotomies of the remaining mandible - A new technique for a special indication: Case report.

There are several indications for resecting the bony chin, such as squamous cell carcinoma, sarcoma, or benign tumors of the jaw such as ameloblastoma. Several techniques for reconstruction of the bony chin, such as the use of metal plates and also revascularized free bone grafts of the iliac crest, fibula, or scapula, are common. In the case of poor vascular supply, however, alternative techniques may be necessary. In this report, a new technique is described using pedicled bone flaps from both sagittally split mandibular stumps following chin resection. These flaps were pedicled on the myloh

Gorham's disease of the mandible: radiological features.

The most conspicuous element of Gorham's disease is its radiographic features, wherein massive disappearance of the mandible is observed. We report a case of an adolescent boy with massive osteolysis of the mandible in whom the diagnosis of Gorham's disease was made. A 14-year-old boy was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, for the management of a massive mandibular deformity. He was diagnosed with a hemangioma-like lesion at 1 year of age. The disease had progressed for an unknown number of years. Plain X-r

Does mandible ramus height asymmetry affect postoperative skeletal stability in orthognathic surgery patients?

BACKGROUND: Relapses following orthognathic surgery have been reported to exceed 2% to 50%, depending on multiple factors. This study aimed to analyze the stability after orthognathic surgery in patients with mandibular ramus height asymmetry through 3D reconstruction using Cone-beam CT. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study investigated patients who underwent mandibular setback surgery using bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Three-dimensional CT scans were taken at three different time points. Evaluation of the postoperative stability involved measuring changes in the x, y, and z

Novel Treatment Planning of Hemimandibular Hyperplasia by the Use of Three-Dimensional Computer-Aided-Design and Computer-Aided-Manufacturing Technologies.

RATIONALE AND AIM: Hemimandibular hyperplasia is characterized by an obvious overgrowth in the size of the mandible on one side, which can extend up to the midline causing facial asymmetry. Surgical resection of the overgrowth depends heavily on the skill and experience of the surgeon. This report describes a novel methodology of applying three-dimensional computer-aided-design and computer-aided-manufacturing principles in improving the outcome of surgery in 2 mandibular hyperplasia patients. METHODOLOGY: Both patients had their cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) scan performed. CMF Pro Pl

Exploring Paediatric Jaw Osteosarcoma: A Detailed Case Report of a 12-Year-Old Girl and Review of the Literature.

Osteosarcoma, the most common primary bone malignancy, rarely affects the jaw, representing only 6%-10% of cases. Jaw osteosarcoma typically occurs in individuals between the ages of 30 and 50 years and is uncommon in children. It often involves the mandible, especially in males, presenting with swelling, tooth mobility, and paraesthesia rather than pain. We present a rare case of jaw osteosarcoma in a 12-year-old girl who exhibited paraesthesia and a significant mandibular mass. Imaging demonstrated extensive mandibular involvement with Codman's triangle formation, and a biopsy confirmed the

Giant ameloblastoma of the mandible.

Ameloblastoma is a benign odontogenic tumor characterized by slow, asymptomatic growth and local aggressiveness. We report a case of a 24-year-old female with a gradually enlarging, painless swelling on the left side of her mandible over 3 years. Imaging revealed a 12 × 8 cm multilocular radiolucent lesion with cortical thinning and perforation, extending from the premolar to the angle of the mandibular ramus. Differential diagnoses included odontogenic keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, and other radiolucent mandibular lesions, and histopathological analysis confirmed a solid/multicystic ameloblas

Duplication of the oral cavity and mandible: a rare congenital craniofacial anomaly.

A newborn girl was referred to the otolaryngology service after prenatal imaging showed a right mandibular mass. Physical examination revealed a 1-2 cm mass along the right mandible with the appearance of a vestigial oral cavity. Tissue resembling the vermillion and primitive tongue appeared innervated and moved in conjunction with oral movements. MRI and CT of the mandible after birth confirmed a partially ossified soft tissue mass of the right mandibular body, containing unerupted teeth. She was taken to the operating room at 6 months of age for mass excision and reconstruction. Postoperativ

Otocephalus: histopathology and three-dimensional reconstruction.

Otocephaly is a lethal malformation of the first and second branchial arches, which consists of ventromedial displacement of the external ear structures (synotia), mandibular aplasia (agnathia), absence of the tongue (aglossia), and microstomia. We present the first complete description of the temporal bone findings in a case of otocephalus. A three-dimensional computer-assisted reconstruction of the right temporal bone was performed, allowing a unique graphic analysis. An extremely low-lying middle fossa tegmen was noted with malrotation of the middle ear structures. Severe ossicular malforma

Pathologic mandibular fracture after biting crab shells following ramal bone graft.

The mandibular ramus is considered an appropriate choice for reconstruction of maxillofacial defects because of sufficient amounts of material and fewer donor site complications. Although bone harvesting from the mandibular ramus has many advantages, in rare cases it can result in pathologic fracture of the mandible. Here, we present a case of 59-year-old man who suffered a pathologic mandible fracture related to biting hard foods, such as crab shells, after a sinus bone lifting with ramal bone graft procedure performed 2 weeks prior. He underwent closed reduction by intermaxillary fixation wi

An atypical presentation of breast cancer metastasis.

A 78-year-old woman heard a crack in her left mandible while eating a biscuit and reported to her dentist, who urgently referred her to the oral and maxillofacial surgery department. On examination she had a lesion in the body of her left mandible, which had eroded through the lower border and caused a pathological fracture. Her past medical history included a left mastectomy and level II axillary lymph node dissection for a 27 mm grade III invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast 9 months prior to her mandibular fracture. A transoral incisional biopsy was performed which confirmed the man
