Longitudinal evaluation of optic nerve head perfusion after phacoemulsification using OCT angiography.

BACKGROUND: Cataract surgery may influence posterior segment microcirculation; however, its effect on optic nerve head (ONH) perfusion remains incompletely understood. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables noninvasive assessment of ONH microvasculature and may reveal subtle postoperative changes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled 76 eyes from 38 patients undergoing uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery. ONH OCTA imaging was performed preoperatively and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively using the OptoVue system. Radial peripapillary c

Association Among Serum Vitamin D Levels, Visual Field Alterations, and Optical Coherence Tomography Parameters: A Clinical Correlation Study.

Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly recognized as a systemic factor influencing retinal health through inflammatory, neuroprotective, and vasculotropic pathways. Evidence regarding early retinal alterations in otherwise healthy adults remains limited. This cross-sectional study evaluated 120 eyes from 60 healthy adults stratified by serum 25(OH)D levels into <30 ng/mL (n = 60) and ≥30 ng/mL (n = 60). All subjects underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography (OCTA), visual field testing, and contrast sensitivity assessment. Central macular thickness (CMT), ganglion cell comple

VEGF-E Attenuates Injury After Ischemic Stroke by Promoting Reparative Revascularization.

The angiogenic response after stroke correlates with mild injury and an improved recovery. Stimulation of post-stroke angiogenesis using vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A is associated with an increased risk of vascular destabilization, leading to life-threatening complications. The non-mammalian VEGF-A homolog, VEGF-E, stimulates stable cutaneous vascularization and promotes wound healing. Herein, we posit that VEGF-E represents a potential mediator of reparative revascularization after ischemic stroke. C57BL6/J wildtype mice were subjected to experimental stroke, and VEGF-E or VEGF

Intracranial Occlusion in Cryptogenic Stroke Is Not Predictive of Recurrent Ischemic Stroke: A Propensity-Score Matched Analysis of the Cardiac Abnormalities in Stroke Prevention and Risk of Recurrence Study.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial occlusions in embolic stroke of undetermined source are histopathologically similar to cardiac sources of embolism. Whether patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source and intracranial occlusion benefit from anticoagulation is unknown. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort of adults with cryptogenic stroke was queried for patients with proximal or medium/distal vessel occlusion. The primary outcome was recurrent ischemic stroke, which was assessed in unadjusted and adjusted Cox proportional hazards models and repeated following 1:1 propensity score match

The use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography in borderline personality disorder compared to health control subjects.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) or OCT angiography (OCTA) has been investigated in few research studies of psychiatric disorders. No research has been done using OCT or OCTA in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHODS: OCTA measured foveal avascular zone (FAZ), macular vessel density (MVD), and peripapillary vessel density (PVD). OCT measured the peripapillary retinal fiber layer (RNFL) and central retinal thickness (CRT). The study utilized the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) to

Retinal microvasculature features in patients with migraine: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a central nervous system disorder involving neuronal and vascular factors. The brain has a close anatomical relationship with retinal vessels and similar regulatory processes, and the retinal vascular system is the only in vivo vessel that can be directly visualized, while optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is an advanced retinal vascular imaging technique. In this study, OCTA was used to study the retinal vascular density (VD) and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) in migraine patients, which provided a theoretical basis for its use as a candidate for rapid and n

Angiogenic gene characterization and vessel permeability of dermal microvascular endothelial cells isolated from burn hypertrophic scar.

Hypertrophic scar (HTS) formation is a common challenge for patients after burn injury. Dermal microvascular endothelial cells (DMVECs) are an understudied cell type in HTS. An increase in angiogenesis and microvessel density can be observed in HTS. Endothelial dysfunction may play a role in scar development. This study aims to generate a functional and expression profile of HTS DMVECs. We hypothesize that transcript and protein-level responses in HTS DMVECs differ from those in normal skin (NS). HTSs were created in red Duroc pigs. DMVECs were isolated using magnetic-activated cell sorting wi

Lung injury and neutrophil density during air embolization in sheep after leukocyte depletion with nitrogen mustard.

The hypothesis that neutrophils are a major mediator of acute lung injury is based in part on the results from leukocyte depletion studies in which peripheral leukopenia is induced by administration of chemotherapeutic agents or antileukocyte serum. Because of valid concerns about the specificity and multiplicity of effects these regimens have in vivo, we designed a correlative structure-function study of the impact of one depletion regimen on the intrapulmonary density of neutrophils in two groups of sheep. We gave one group of four awake sheep repeated injections of nitrogen mustard (0.4 mg/

OCTA and microperimetry in Behçet's retinal vasculitis: subgroup analysis, structure-function correlation, and 12-month follow-up evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In Behçet's syndrome (BS)-associated retinal vasculitis, optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography (OCTA) and microperimetry allow noninvasive assessment of retinal microvascular integrity and macular function, but integrated structure-function analyses across all retinal vascular plexuses during inactive disease remain limited. This study evaluated age- and sex-related differences, structure-function associations, and 12-month changes in inactive retinal vasculitis. METHODS: This observational study included 14 patients (23 eyes; mean age 40.6 ± 11.7 years) with inactive BS-

Hypertensive BPH/2J mice exhibit sex-specific heart failure progression and late-life microvascular rarefaction.

Heart failure (HF) involves structural and functional impairments in ventricular filling or blood ejection, and it is a growing health burden in the United States. Sex differences in HF with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) have been observed, and this condition is exacerbated by endothelial cell (EC) microvascular rarefaction. HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is more prevalent in women, with hypertension being the major risk factor. However, the mechanisms by which hypertension contributes to HFpEF development remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that male hypertensiv

Differential Effects of LOX-1 Inhibition on Aortic Structure and Posterior Cerebral Artery Structure and Function in an Experimental Model of Preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy marked by vascular dysfunction, large artery stiffness, and excess oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). oxLDL activates oxidative stress pathways which contribute to arterial stiffness through interaction with the lectin-like oxLDL receptor 1 (LOX-1). Increased vascular stiffness is associated with higher pulse wave velocity and downstream microvasculature damage. Here we evaluated the ability of LOX-1 inhibition (LOX-1i) to prevent large artery structural and microvascular structural and functional changes via assessment of the descend

Drag-Reducing Polymers Improve Vascular Hemodynamics and Tissue Oxygen Supply in Mouse Model of Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterised by hyperglycaemia and glucose intolerance caused by impaired insulin action and/or defective insulin secretion. Long-term hyperglycaemia leads to various structural and functional microvascular changes within multiple tissues, including the brain, which involves blood-brain barrier alteration, inflammation and neuronal dysfunction. We have shown previously that drag-reducing polymers (DRP) improve microcirculation and tissue oxygen supply, thereby reducing neurologic impairment in different rat models of brain injury. We hypot

Microvascular changes in the macular and parafoveal areas of multiple sclerosis patients without optic neuritis.

Retinal imaging has been proposed as a biomarker for neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Recently, a technique for non-invasive assessment of the retinal microvasculature called optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was introduced. We investigated retinal microvasculature alterations in participants with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) without history of optic neuritis (ON) and compared them to a healthy control group. The study was performed in a prospective, case-control design, including 58 participants (n = 100 eyes) with RRMS without ON and 78 age- and sex-match

Association of cerebral microvascular dysfunction and white matter injury in Alzheimer's disease.

Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) often have cerebral white matter (WM) hyperintensities on MRI and microinfarcts of presumed microvascular origin pathologically. Here, we determined if vasodilator dysfunction of WM-penetrating arterioles is associated with pathologically defined WM injury and disturbances in quantitative MRI-defined WM integrity in patients with mixed microvascular and AD pathology. We analyzed tissues from 28 serially collected human brains from research donors diagnosed with varying degrees of AD neuropathologic change (ADNC) with or without cerebral microinfarcts (mVB
