Control and management of sheep mange and pediculosis in Great Britain.

The patterns of insecticide use for the prevention and control of sheep lice and Psoroptes mites, in England, Wales and Scotland, in 2003-2004, were examined using data from a retrospective questionnaire. Overall, 375 of the 966 (39%) farmers who responded said that they treated at least once to prevent louse infestation. For scab, 426 of the 966 (44%) farmers who responded said that they had treated prophylactically to prevent the disease. There were no significant differences between regions in the number of times farmers treated to prevent lice (chi(2)=0.54, P>0.1) or scab (chi(2)=0.16, P>0

Parasitology and urban livestock farming in nigeria: prevalence of ova in faecal and soil samples and animal ectoparasites in Makurdi.

Domestic environmental pollution resulting from urban livestock farming was investigated in Makurdi using parasitological techniques. The test tube flotation technique was used for the parasitological analysis of animal faecal matter and soil samples collected from residential premises. Ectoparasitic fauna of dogs, goats, sheep and cattle cohabiting with humans within the same residential compound were also collected and identified. The hand-picking and body brushing methods were employed to search for ticks, fleas, lice and mites. Of the 150 soil samples examined, 55 (36.7 %) were positive fo

Transmission of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi strains among humans, wild rodents, and trombiculid mites in an area of Japan in which tsutsugamushi disease is newly endemic.

Thirty-two newly isolated strains of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, 14 from patients with tsutsugamushi disease, 12 from wild rodents, and 6 from trombiculid mites parasitizing rodents in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, were examined for reactivities to 12 monoclonal antibodies by an indirect fluorescent-antibody test to classify their antigenicities. All of the isolates could be classified into one of six groups (KN-1, KN-2, KN-3, GJ-1, R158, and R161) according to their reactivities to the monoclonal antibodies. The KN-1 and GJ-1 strains that are prevalent among patients from Gifu Prefecture had the same

Spatiotemporal clustering and ecological niche modeling of Varroa destructor infestations in honey bee colonies across Türkiye.

Varroa destructor is the most important ectoparasite affecting honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies worldwide and represents a major threat to apiculture through its direct pathogenic effects and its role in the transmission of viral diseases. Despite its widespread occurrence in Türkiye, information regarding its large-scale spatial distribution and environmental determinants remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of V. destructor infestations across Türkiye using retrospective Space-Time Permutation Scan Statistics (SaTScan) and ecological ni

Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) ectoparasites in livestock production systems from central Argentina: Influencing factors on parasitism.

Haematophagous ectoparasites are worldwide vectors of many zoonotic bacterial diseases, both emerging and re-emerging, whose incidences are rising. Livestock development alters different environmental characteristics such as the microclimate of a site, changing the availability, density and susceptibility of the hosts to pathogens and vectors, indirectly influencing the spread and persistence of a disease within an ecosystem. The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus), the most abundant vertebrate pest species found on livestock farms from Argentina, is a reservoir for several important zoonotic bacte

Treatment of rosacea and demodicosis with benzyl benzoate: effects of different doses on Demodex density and clinical symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Patients with rosacea or demodicosis have high facial skin Demodex densities (Dds). Topical ivermectin, benzyl benzoate (BB) and crotamiton have been shown to decrease Dds in vivo, but there are few data on the clinical and acaricidal effects of BB among patients with rosacea. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of topical BB (+crotamiton) treatment on Dds and clinical symptoms of rosacea and demodicosis, and compare three BB treatment regimens. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, 394 patients (117 with rosacea, 277 with demodicosis) were included. Three BB (+crotam

Laboratory evaluation of aromatic essential oils from thirteen plant species as candidate repellents against Leptotrombidium chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae), the vector of scrub typhus.

Scrub typhus, a rickettsial disease transmitted by several species of Leptotrombidium chiggers (larvae), is endemic in many areas of Asia. The disease is best prevented by the use of personal protective measures, including repellents. In this study commercially produced aromatic, essential oils of 13 plant species and ethanol (control) were tested in the laboratory for repellency against host-seeking chiggers of Leptotrombidium imphalum Vercammen-Grandjean and Langston (Acari: Trombiculidae). A rapid, simple and economic in vitro test method was used by exposing the chigger for up to 5 min. Re

Seasonal variation of North American form of Gigantolaelaps mattogrossensis (Acari: Laelapidae) on marsh rice rat in southern coastal Texas.

The ectoparasites of a small mammal community within an intertidal zone in the upper Gulf coast region of Texas were studied to assess the seasonal variation in abundances of the mite Gigantolaelaps mattogrossensis (Fonseca) (Acari: Laelapidae) on the marsh rice rat, Oryzomys palustris (Harlan). Further study into the ecology and dynamics of this parasite-host relationship was deemed to be necessary to expand the understanding of these potential participants in the ecology of Bayou Hantavirus, an important causative agent of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The objective of this study was to det
