Existential experiences and needs related to induced abortion in a group of Swedish women: a quantitative investigation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of existential experiences and needs among women who have requested an induced abortion. METHODS: A questionnaire was used to collect information from 499 women who had requested an induced abortion. A principle component analysis resulted in three components of existential experiences and needs: existential thoughts, existential practices, and humanisation of the foetus. These components were analysed in relation to background data and other data from the questionnaire. RESULTS: Existential experiences and needs were common. For 61% of women existent

Benign Envy in Nursing: A Qualitative Exploration of Perceived Triggers and Drivers.

BACKGROUND: Benign envy, a constructive form of upward social comparison, has received limited attention in nursing despite its potential relevance to professional learning, motivation, and growth. Although quantitative research has highlighted the potentially constructive aspects of benign envy, qualitative understanding of how nurses experience, interpret, and respond to benign envy within professional contexts remains limited. PURPOSE: This qualitative exploratory study sought to explore the perceptions benign envy within clinical and professional contexts. The research specifically focuse

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in war: a comprehensive review of subtypes, risk and protective factors, and therapeutic approaches.

BACKGROUND: War-related trauma is associated with substantial mental health burden, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD). These presentations often co-occur with depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, sleep disturbance, functional impairment, and moral injury, complicating assessment and treatment. Despite growing research on trauma in conflict-affected populations, recent evidence remains uneven across active-duty personnel, veterans, civilians, refugees, internally displaced persons, and children. METHODS: Studies published in English between 202

Building solidarity during COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS.

While the WHO, public health experts, and political leaders have referenced solidarity as an important part of our responses to COVID-19, I consider how we build solidarity during pandemics in order to improve the effectiveness of our responses. I use Prainsack and Buyx's definition of solidarity, which highlights three different tiers: (1) interpersonal solidarity, (2) group solidarity, and (3) institutional solidarity. Each tier of solidarity importantly depends on the actions and norms established at the lower tiers. Although empathy and solidarity are distinct moral concepts, I argue that

[Dialectic of hope in patients with a limited life expectancy. Ethical and narrative aspects].

The patient's right to know his/her clinical information corresponds with the duty of the health care professional, especially the physician responsible for his/her care, to provide it. However, in the case of patients whose life prognosis is limited, this presents several difficulties. Determining the content of this right is complicated because it depends on the circumstances. This favors the conspiracy of silence, the main cause of which can be found in the maintenance of the patient's hope. However, condemning the patient to a false hope prevents him/her from developing a grieving process,

Paediatric deep brain stimulation: ethical considerations in malignant Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by the presence of motor and vocal tics. Patients with malignant TS experience severe disease sequelae; risking morbidity and mortality due to tics, self-harm, psychiatric comorbidities and suicide. By definition, those cases termed 'malignant' are refractory to all conventional psychiatric and pharmacological regimens. In these instances, deep brain stimulation (DBS) may be efficacious. Current 2015 guidelines recommend a 6-month period absent of suicidal ideation before DBS is offered to patients with

Physician unionisation in the USA: ethical and empirical considerations and the free-rider problem.

While American physicians have traditionally practised as non-unionised professionals, there has been increasing debate in recent years over whether physicians in training (known also as interns, residents or house staff) are justified in unionising and using collective action. This paper examines specific ethical criteria that would permit union action, including a desire to ameliorate patient care as well as the goal of improving the conditions of working physicians. We posit that traditional rebuttals to physician unionisation often lean on an infinite conception of a doctor's energies and

Bioethical Issues as Triggers of Religious Transformation in Orthodox Christianity.

The advent of new biomedical technologies has given rise to an emerging area of sociocultural discourse. The sociocultural perception of these technologies is contingent upon a number of factors, including the prevailing attitudes within dominant religious traditions. Religious bioethics is fundamentally distinct from secular bioethics. The former is grounded in unchanging sacred scriptures and traditions, which inform its normative provisions. Consequently, a shift in the perception of technology must be accompanied by a corresponding shift in how religious institutions interpret scripture an

Inverse option generation: Inferences about others' values based on what comes to mind.

Prior research shows that when people try to think of things, such as solutions to a problem, the options that come to mind most often are those that they consider statistically common and valuable. Here, we ask whether ordinary people anticipate this and, therefore, infer that when uncommon solutions come to someone's mind, it is diagnostic of how much those solutions are represented as valuable-including in the moral domain. To illustrate, imagine your friend is brainstorming what to serve a vegetarian couple and says aloud, "maybe pizza, salad, or penne alfredo?" While some of the options c

Ethical considerations during Mpox Outbreak: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Historically, epidemics have been accompanied by the concurrent emergence of stigma, prejudice, and xenophobia. This scoping review aimed to describe and map published research targeting ethical values concerning monkeypox (mpox). In addition, it aimed to understand the research gaps related to mpox associated stigma. METHODS: We comprehensively searched databases (PubMed Central, PubMed Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Ovid, and Google Scholar) to identify published literature concerning mpox ethical issues and stigma from May 6, 2022, to February 15, 2023. The key search terms u

Longitudinal associations between lie evaluations and frequency: The moderating role of age.

While previous studies have demonstrated correlations between children and adolescents' evaluations of lies and lie-telling behaviors, the temporal order of these associations over time and changes across this developmental period remain unexamined. The current study examined longitudinal associations among children and adolescents' (N = 1128; Mage = 11.54, SD = 1.68, 49.80% male, and 83.6% white) evaluations of lies to parents for autonomy and lie-telling frequency to parents and friends. Autoregressive cross-lagged analysis revealed longitudinal associations moderated by age. Among children,

"She looked ten years older": Mechanisms of the new Woman's marriage and premature aging under patriarchy in Sarah Grand's The Heavenly Twins.

This article examines how the New Woman's premature aging happens in tandem with patriarchal marriage at the fin de siècle through a scrutiny of Sarah Grand's New Woman novel, The Heavenly Twins (1893/1992). The novel is a narrative of female degeneration, in which its three young and married New Woman characters become impuissant to realize the cumbersome feminized ideals of national regeneration and age or die prematurely in their twenties. Their premature decline is caused by moral and sexual degeneration of their military husbands who practice the ideology of progress at the imperial front

RESPONDER: A qualitative study of ethical issues faced by critical care nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AIMS: To identify and understand ethical challenges arising during COVID-19 in intensive care and nurses' perceptions of how they made "good" decisions and provided "good" care when faced with ethical challenges and use of moral resilience. BACKGROUND: Little is known about the ethical challenges that nurses faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and ways they responded. DESIGN: Qualitative, descriptive free-text surveys and semi-structured interviews, underpinned by appreciative inquiry. METHODS: Nurses working in intensive care in one academic quaternary care centre and three community hospit

Ethical Solutions to the Problem of Organ Shortage.

Organ shortage is a major survival issue for millions of people worldwide. Globally 1.2 million people die each year from kidney failure. In this paper, we critically examine and find lacking extant proposals for increasing organ supply, such as opting in and opt out for deceased donor organs, and parochial altruism and paired kidney exchange for live organs. We defend two ethical solutions to the problem of organ shortage. One is to make deceased donor organs automatically available for transplant without requiring consent from the donor or their relatives. The other is for society to buy non

Gheirat as a complex emotional reaction to relational boundary violations: A mixed-methods investigation.

People from different cultural backgrounds vary in how they define, perceive, and react to violations of relational boundaries. Muslim cultures are diverse and include nearly one in four people in the world, yet research on their relational and moral norms is scarce. We contribute to narrowing this gap by studying gheirat, a moral-emotional experience ubiquitous in Muslim Middle Eastern cultures. In four mixed-methods studies, we study how gheirat is experienced, what situations elicit it, and its social functions among Iranian adults (N = 1,107) using qualitative interviews, scenario- and pro

Ethical and religious dilemmas of modern reproductive choices and the Islamic perspective.

Advances in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) are constantly evolving, starting from Artificial Insemination (AI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF), to the current state of the art technologies that enable embryo biopsy for Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT). The future includes gene mapping and DNA replacement technologies with the potential for the so-called "designer babies." In other words, shortly, a modern couple may be in a position to decide how to procreate and with whom; which pregnancy to keep and which one to terminate depending on their prior knowledge about

Dermatologic features in good film characters who turn evil: the transformation.

Dermatologic depictions in film are often used to symbolize evil. To ascertain whether certain dermatologic characteristics are more representative of evil in movies, skin findings in film characters before and after evil transformation were compared using the Good Movie Characters Turned Bad poll courtesy of The Internet Movie Database (IMDb). The poll ranked the 35 most remarkable moral transformations in cinema. Data was analyzed from 27 characters who met study criteria and there was a statistically significant, greater number of dermatologic features seen in characters after an evil trans

[Scientific ethics of the origin of humans].

The analysis of the early human life from the view point of a scientific ethics is presented. Life is a historical materioenergetic process of specific organization. This phylo-ontogenetic process is a continuous process without interruption. Biology has demonstrated that human eggs or embryos are full human individuals, even though not all human conception is a human being. The contradictions involved in taking ethical decisions after knowing the percentage of conceptions obtained by in vitro or in fallopian tube fertilization that reach the birth are shown. The advantages of scientific ethic

Asking pragmatic and RAD questions about organoid intelligence.

Debates about whether organoid intelligence systems are conscious, or can suffer, often stall on the question of what these organoid entities and systems are. A reflexive, anticipatory, and deliberative approach, grounded in a moral principle of complexity, instead asks what they do and provides guidance on that basis. Unanswerable questions are transformed into more workable processes.

Self- enucleation of eyes in schizophrenia- an unusual mode of deliberate self harm.

Self inflicted injury to the eyes including self-enucleation is a rare phenomenon. The authors describe a case of bilateral self-enucleation in a patient with paranoid schizophrenia. A review of literature shows that self-enucleation is correlated with moral, religious and psychodynamic paradigms and various unconscious mechanisms have been proposed to explain this unusual behaviour.
