Rowing requires both the upper and lower body to be active for balance, steering, and propulsion, constituting a real challenge for athletes with disabilities. To our knowledge, adapted setups allowing pararowing for people with bilateral transfemoral amputation have not yet been described. This case report describes the adapted setup for Mr S, 24 years old, who underwent bilateral transfemoral amputation in 2019 after a motorcycle accident. He walks with 2 prostheses and practices high-level para-rowing in the Para-Rowing 2 single sculls category. We designed 2 prostheses consisting of a line

Post-traumatic missing talus is a rare and severe injury that often results in poor functional outcomes, with no consensus on the optimal treatment approach as strategies vary based on injury severity. We present the case of a 44-year-old male who sustained a missing talus following a high-energy motorcycle accident. After initial wound management and application of an external fixator, the patient underwent size-matched, fresh-frozen talus allograft transplantation combined with subtalar fusion. Postoperative radiography and CT confirmed successful transplantation with solid subtalar fusion,

Post-traumatic striatocapsular infarction is extremely rare and has been described only within the vascular territory of the perforating arteries originating from the middle cerebral artery (MCA). We recently encountered a patient presenting with unilateral multifocal striatocapsular hemorrhagic infarctions following mild head injury. This 25-year-old female was admitted to our trauma center after a motorcycle accident. Initial brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed multifocal acute hemorrhagic infarctions with a clustering in the right caudate head, anterior limb

One of the most impressive soft tissue injuries is the facial degloving, normally associated with industrial machines and traffic accidents. This injury is characterized by the separation of the skin and cartilage from the bones, compromising the soft tissues correlated in the trauma area, nerves, and blood vessels. A 28-year-old patient, male, was referred to Araçatuba's Santa Casa Hospital, after a motorcycle accident, hitting his face on the sidewalk. The patient was conscious, oriented, denying fainting and unconsciousness during the accident, and complaining of pain in the nasal region of

We report a case of a large plant foreign body in the orbit. A 30-year-old male presented to our hospital 6 h after a penetrating orbital injury in his left superior eyelid when he skidded from his motorcycle while riding. When the patient reported to us, he already had an inability to open his left eye and a continuous pain in the left orbit. On examination, there was a large plant foreign body penetrating the nasal orbit through the left upper eyelid. Orbital CT revealed a low density linear foreign body measuring 3.6 x 0.5 cm in the left orbit. An emergency operation was performed to remove

We report a case of posttraumatic syringomyelia (PTS) that developed 10 months after spinal cord injury (SCI), A 46-year-old man was involved in a motorcycle accident, in which he received a severe spinal cord injury due to a burst fracture at the T6 level. The patient underwent posterior fixation without decompression at another hospital, and was transferred to our hospital for rehabilitation. Ten months after the SCI, he complained of back and neck pain caused by bending his head backward. MRI showed syringomyelia shaped like a cone extending from the T6 to the C6 level, enlarged by cerebros

We report five cases of blunt cardiac rupture seen in our hospital during the last 6 years. All these patients sustained blunt chest trauma due to motor vehicle or motorcycle accidents, and all had vital signs on arrival at the emergency department. We suspected cardiovascular injuries from the findings of echocardiography and CT scans, and all five cases were operated on 2-6 h after injury. Four had a median sternotomy, and one had a lateral thoracotomy. During the operations, we found that two patients had pericardium injuries and all five patients had right chamber injuries, which included

Renal artery injury is an uncommon complication of blunt abdominal trauma. We present a case of a 19-year-old man who developed acute cortical necrosis in a congenital single kidney after a motorcycle accident. On initial presentation, he had signs of splenic injury and required immediate laparotomy and splenectomy. His renal function deteriorated, and he became dialysis dependent. Computed tomography followed by percutaneous angiography showed a dissection of a single renal artery causing the formation of a large pseudoaneurysm. A second angiogram showed an increase in the size of the pseudoa

This study evaluated the incidence and outcome of serious brain injury from traffic-related causes in 695 patients admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery at Karolinska Hospital during 1981-1992. A total of 37.3% of patients were car occupants, 28.1% pedestrians, 12.9% bicyclists, 12.2% car-bicycle/car-moped and 9.5% motorcycle riders. The dominating injury was brain contusion (61.6%) verified with computerized tomography. The level of consciousness was evaluated by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and outcome by the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at discharge and 6-36 months thereafter. The final

Between 1987 and 1989 there were approximately 5,000 cases of fatal and injury-sustained road traffic accidents, of which 2.3-3.0% were alcohol related (blood alcohol levels greater than the legal limit of 80 mg% ethanol). The offenders of alcohol-related accidents are mostly Chinese (> 79%), male (> 98%), and more often 30-40 years old. The majority of the alcohol-related accidents (> 74%) took place between 8 P.M. and 4 A.M. in fine weather and light traffic. Rear-end, head-on, and side-on collisions comprised > 60% of all the alcohol-related accidents, and losing control of vehicles approxi

Motorcyclists who are involved in accidents generally suffer severe multiple injuries, some of which are not readily apparent on initial examination. One such subtle injury is fracture, with or without dislocation, in the upper thoracic spine. The severe spinal cord damage produced by the injury is often overshadowed by cerebral or cervical injury. Proper diagnosis is further hampered by the fact that the upper thoracic region is difficult to examine radiographically on plain films, particularly when using portable equipment. Of a group of 14 motorcyclists having 26 fractures and/or dislocatio

Previous reports have failed to demonstrate a statistically significant adverse effect of acute ethanol intoxication in the well-resuscitated trauma patient. In the present study the prevalence of acute alcohol intoxication and its effect on outcome was analyzed in a homogenous population of young, previously healthy motorcycle accident victims (N = 134). The incidence of intoxication was 25%. The intoxicated cyclists were at fault for the accident 50% more often than the nonintoxicated cyclists and were found to wear helmets one third as frequently. Furthermore, the protective effect of helme

The anatomic distribution of fractures in this study showed more fractures of the condylar and parasymphysis/symphysis regions, with correspondingly fewer body and angle fractures, than in other reported studies. The site of fracture is related to the type of trauma involved. Altercations, in which most force is directed in a single blow to the lateral aspect of the jaw, tend to result more frequently in angle and body fractures and less often in condylar, symphysis, and alveolar fractures. Automobile accidents, which more frequently involve trauma to the anterior mandible, result in more frac

INTRODUCTION: In 2019, the World Health Assembly declared emergency care essential to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Few sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries have developed robust approaches to sustainably deliver emergency medical services (EMS) at scale, as high-income country models are financially impractical. Innovative reassessment of EMS delivery in resource-limited settings is necessary as timely emergency care access can substantially reduce mortality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed the Lay First Responder (LFR) program by training 1,291 pre-existing motorcycle t

This study analysed motorcyclist violation (MV) crashes on suburban roads of China to investigate how determinants affect MV crash injury severity and explore the temporal stability of determinants. Crash data from Xi'an, China (2015-2018) were utilized to investigate three MV crash injury categories: no injury, minor injury and severe injury. Motorcyclist-related, crash-related, roadway-related, environment-related and time-related characteristics were analysed utilizing a group of random parameters multinomial logit models with heterogeneity in means and variances. The temporal instability w

High-velocity traumatic amputations of the proximal upper extremity are devastating to the patient and represent an extreme surgical challenge to the treatment team. The hand surgeon must simultaneously battle devascularization with timely microvascular anastomosis, gross contamination with meticulous debridement, and amputation with stable fixation. In restoring a functional extremity, many of these goals are in contention with each other. This case describes a novel management strategy for a left transhumeral amputation sustained by a 23-year-old man in a motorcycle accident. The amputated a

Isolated trapezium fractures are a rare type of injury, accounting for approximately 4% of all carpal fractures. Due to their nonspecific symptoms and difficulty in detection with conventional radiography, these fractures are often underdiagnosed. This case report details a 22-year-old male who sustained a trapezium fracture after a motorcycle accident. The patient presented with wrist pain and mild edema, but radiographs were normal. However, computed tomography (CT) revealed a small fracture in the dorsal portion of the trapezium. Conservative treatment with wrist immobilization was administ

Delayed cardiac tamponade following blunt chest trauma is a rare incident, and we provide a report including a literature review for further discussion. The patient is a 56-year-old male. He fell off a motorcycle and sustained contusions to the left side of his chest. He presented to our emergency department. His consciousness was clear and vital signs were normal. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple left rib fractures, left hemothorax, and left pulmonary contusion, but no pericardial effusion was detected. He returned home, and stayed at rest for a few days. He walked for 15 minut
