Intracavernous injection of papaverine was tested in a group of 29 patients with multiple sclerosis and erectile dysfunction. Acceptable rigidity was obtained in 27 patients of whom 23 started to use self-injections as treatment. During an observation period of 5-12 months (mean 8.5 months) a total of 297 injections (3-35 per patient) were reported and 272 injections (92%) produced rigidity in 8-480 min. Analysis of DNA fragments of the CD8 gene following digestion with three restriction enzymes showed no differences between patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), familial MS and controls. These abnormalities suggest that any abnormalities in the expression of CD8 protein in MS are not likely to be due to a gross deletion or rearrangement of the CD8 gene.

The authors determined in 1984 by radioimmunoassay (INEP kit) the serum prolactin concentration in 76 multiple sclerosis patients (33 males and 34 females) aged from 21 to 53 years, with disease duration from 2 to 30 years. Platelet aggregation (PA) stimulated by encephalitogenic peptide (EP) and PA induced by ADP were measured in 83 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 70 control subjects with other neurological diseases (OND). EP-stimulated PA was significantly increased in MS patients as compared with the controls. There was no significant difference in ADP-induced PA between patients with MS and OND. The results are discussed in terms of EP-stimulated platelets playing a role in the pathogenesis of MS by affecting the venular permeability of the brain.

In a hospital-based study of 400 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), 42 per cent of patients who had had MS for 10 years or more had benign disease. Early age of onset and a long first remission were significantly associated with a good prognosis. Contrast sensitivity tests a basic visual function which is not examined by conventional visual acuity testing or visual evoked responses. Quantitative and qualitative (oligoclonal band) immunoglobulin abnormalities are one of the hallmarks of multiple sclerosis. The influence of pregnancy on multiple sclerosis was studied in 338 women by determining in each trimester of pregnancy and post partum the number of relapses and the corresponding relapse rate. A group of 202 patients with suspected, probable or definite multiple sclerosis was studied, using cranial computed tomography (CT). Atrophy alone, or in combination with white-matter and periventricular lucencies, and areas of contrast enhancement, were the main abnormal findings in 52% of patients. A report is given on 82 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) who were treated over a period of up to a maximum of eight years - average treatment 4-6 years.
