A case of aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva.

Aggressive angiomyxoma (AA) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of the female pelvis and vulva, which has a tendency for local recurrence. AA is occasionally misdiagnosed as Bartholin's gland cyst or abscess, lipoma, simple labial cyst, or soft tissue tumors. We describe a case of AA on the outside of the left labium majus pudendi in a 28-year-old female. We were able to make the preoperative diagnosis of AA by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US), and to perform complete surgical excision with a transperineal minimally invasive approach. The novelty of this case is the use of ultra

Benign sacrococcygeal teratoma with spinal canal invasion and paraplegia.

Sacrococcygeal teratomas can have a wide variety of clinical presentations depending on their size, vascularity, and degree of mass effect upon adjacent structures. Intradural invasion of a sacrococcygeal teratoma is a rare variant that has generally been associated with a favorable neurologic outcome. In this report, we present the case of a neonate with paraplegia secondary to a large Altman type III sacrococcygeal teratoma with extension into the spinal canal. The neoplasm was completely removed using a combined anterior and posterior approach after preoperative embolization of the lateral

Management of thymomas.

Thymoma is a rare neoplasm usually with an indolent growth pattern, however, local invasion and/or metastases may occur. The association with several paraneoplastic syndromes, especially myasthenia gravis, is noteworthy. Surgery has been the standard of care for early stage disease with high cure rates anticipated. The most important prognostic factors after resection are Masaoka stage, World Health Organization (WHO) histology, complete resection status and size. Multimodality therapy can result in long-term disease-free survival for patients presenting with locally advanced disease. Thymomas

Primary duodenal MALT lymphoma.

Primary duodenal MALT lymphoma (MALToma) is a very rare neoplasm arising from the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue of the duodenum. We report a 55-year-old woman with MALToma located in the descending duodenum and accompanying Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach. We performed operative resection due to involvement of the papilla of Vater and submucosal tumor infiltration. Despite wide mucosal spreading, postoperative examination revealed only a small amount of MALToma cells infiltrating into the submucosa. No invasion into the adjacent structure or metastasis to regional lymph nodes

Morphological comparison between benign keratinizing cystic squamous cell tumours of the lung and squamous lesions of the skin in rats.

Approximately 700 cases of keratinizing cystic squamous lung lesions in rats were investigated by light microscopy in order to clarify the nomenclature and classification of these lesions. The structure of benign keratinizing cystic squamous cell tumours of the lung was compared to that of cystic squamous lesions in the skin of rats, with consideration of data from the literature. We conclude that the reviewed keratinizing cystic squamous cell lesions of the lung are true neoplasms and that the growth pattern of these cystic lesions is inconsistent with that of a simple cyst. In the developmen

[Rare malignant tumors and pseudotumors of the prostate].

The authors presents an updated review of rare malignant tumours of the prostate other than adenocarcinoma, as well as of some diagnostic problems caused by inflammatory pseudotumours. Sarcomas, particularly rhabdomyosarcoma (in childhood) and leiomyosarcoma, represent 0.1 to 0.2% of all prostatic malignant neoplasms. Sarcomas show early local extension and vascular invasion. Treatment consists of combined surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Other types of even rarer tumours, either primary or metastatic, have also been described in the prostate (carcinoid, malignant melanoma, malignant ly

Incipient germ cell tumor in a cryptorchid testis.

A 13-year-old male who had bilateral cryptorchid testes since birth underwent testicular biopsies and subsequent left orchiectomy following a diagnosis of malignant germ cell tumor. No tumor mass was noted although the malignant cells were seen within the seminiferous tubules and the interstitium. Five recorded cases of in-situ or incipient germ cell neoplasms of the testes are reviewed; three were infertile, another had a cryptorchid testis, and the fifth was both infertile and cryptorchid. Two of these patients have developed frank carcinoma, which would suggest that the process represents a

The role of immune checkpoint inhibitors in the management of NMIBC: a scoping review of current status and future direction.

INTRODUCTION: Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is a malignancy with a significant recurrence and progression risk. While intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has remained the standard of care for decades, limitations in efficacy, tolerability, and global supply underscore the need for novel therapeutic strategies. Many patients relapse after BCG and are offered radical cystectomy, a highly morbid operation which some are unfit for or decline. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized neoadjuvant and advanced bladder cancer therapy. This has driven interest in ICI

Development and International Evaluation of an Artificial Intelligence-based Model (PROGRxN-BCa) Using the World Health Organization 2004/2022 Grading System to Predict Progression Risk and Improve Substratification for Non-muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Current non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) tools perform suboptimally in predicting progression risk to potentially lethal muscle-invasive disease. We aimed to improve risk assessment using artificial intelligence approaches (PROGression Risk assessment in NMIBC [PROGRxN-BCa]). METHODS: PROGRxN-BCa was trained using 14 clinicopathological features on 3324 NMIBC patients treated from 2005 to 2022 at four Canadian institutions. External testing was performed on 9335 patients treated from 2005 to 2023 across 30 North American and European institutions. The prima

The impact of second transurethral resection on survival outcomes in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer treated with bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Several guidelines recommended that second transurethral resection should be performed in patients with diagnosis of high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. However, therapeutic benefits of second transurethral resection before bacillus Calmette-Guérin intravesical instillation were conflicting amongst previous studies. We investigated the prognostic impact of second transurethral resection before bacillus Calmette-Guérin instillation in high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included 3104 non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer pa

Oncological impact of cystoscopic findings in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between cystoscopic findings and oncological outcomes in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) given that the oncological impact of quantity and quality assessment of tumours with cystoscopy has not been well verified. METHODS: Multiple databases were queried in May 2022 for studies investigating the association of oncological outcomes, such as recurrence-free (RFS), progression-free (PFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS), with cystoscopic findings, including multiplicity, size, and gross appearance of tumours in patients with NMIBC.

Evaluation of sarcopenia in patients receiving intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is associated with adverse outcomes for patients with muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), but less is known about its impact in the setting of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Sarcopenia, skeletal muscle density, and adipose tissue area have been studied as markers of malnutrition and can be determined radiographically. The purpose of this study is to characterize the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with NMIBC receiving intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). METHODS: Following institutional review board approval, patients with NMIBC having recei

Intra-arterial chemotherapy plus BCG, a promising combination adjuvant treatment for high-risk NMIBC.

PURPOSE: To develop a novel combination therapy for high-risk nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT), namely, intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) plus BCG immunotherapy, and to compare the feasibility and safety of the 2 therapies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on the data of 119 patients who were diagnosed with high-risk NMIBC and underwent TURBT in the past 5 years. Those who did not complete the treatment were excluded, and the remaining 98 patients were divided into 2 groups: both groups received intraves

Patients with Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer Previously Treated with Nephroureterectomy Have a High Risk of Recurrence after Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Intravesical Instillation Therapy.

BACKGROUND: There is a high incidence of intravesical recurrence after transurethral resection of bladder tumor for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is widely used to prevent recurrence and progression. There are two types of NMIBC: primary NMIBC and subsequent NMIBC after radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). We compared the clinical outcomes of BCG intravesical instillation therapy between the two types of NMIBC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included a total of 357 patients, who received BCG intravesical instillation the

Electromotive Drug Administration of Mitomycin C (EMDA/MMC) versus Intravesical Immunotherapy with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in Intermediate and High Risk Non Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although TURB of tumor (TURBT) by itself can eradicate a non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) completely, these tumors commonly recur and can progress to MIBC. It is, therefore, necessary to consider adjuvant therapy in most patients. The primary objective of the present study was to report our experience with EMDA/MMC and BCG, considering efficacy, progression, and recurrence, as adjuvant therapy in NMIBC patients; the secondary objective was to assess the efficacy of EMDA/MMC versus BCG as a comparative treatment. METHODS: Between April 2016 and February 2020, a series of

Impact of alternative diagnostic labels for melanoma in situ on management choices and psychological outcomes: protocol for an online randomised study.

INTRODUCTION: A diagnosis of melanoma in situ presents negligible risk to a person's lifespan or physical well-being, but existing terminology makes it difficult for patients to distinguish these from higher risk invasive melanomas. This study aims to explore whether using an alternative label for melanoma in situ may influence patients' management choices and anxiety levels. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a between-subjects randomised online experiment, using hypothetical scenarios. Following consent, eligible participants will be randomised 1:1:1 to three labels: 'melanoma in situ' (co
