To gain insight into the transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) among large migrant groups in The Netherlands, we studied the associations between their demographic and sexual characteristics, in particular condom use, and their sexual mixing patterns with other ethnic groups. An outbreak of hydranencephaly in aborted foetuses and newborn calves occurred following the 2007 epidemic of bluetongue serotype 8 (BTV8\net2006) in the Netherlands. In total 35 aborted foetuses and 20 live-born calves, submitted from September 2007 to May 2008, were examined pathologically. AIMS: The panencephalopathic type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (PECJD) has extensive abnormalities in cerebral white matter as well as the cortex. PECJD has rarely been described in Caucasians and debate continues on its classification and pathogenesis. We describe our experience of PECJD over a 14-year period of surveillance for CJD in the Netherlands and the UK.

The current practice in and the opinion about the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome by surgeons in the Netherlands was evaluated in respect of the extent to which electrodiagnostic studies are used or needed to confirm the diagnosis. Prevalences of parasitic infections in pigs from different housing systems may vary, due to their contact with the environment, and this might have consequences for food safety. In this study, 40 organic, 9 free-range and 24 intensive farms were selected and a total of 845 serum samples were tested for antibodies specific for Toxoplasma and Trichinella using ELISA assays.
