The inferior longitudinal fasciculus: anatomy, function and surgical considerations.

The inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) is a large association white matter tract that interconnects, in a bidirectional manner, the occipital cortex to anterior temporal structures. In view of both its pattern of cortical projections and its recently evidenced multilayered anatomical organization, the ILF has been supposed to be vital for maintaining a wide range of cognitive and affective processes operating on the visual modality. As tumors commonly damage the temporal cortex, an updated knowledge of the functional anatomy of this ventral tract is needed to better map and monitor on-line

Aberrant prefrontal cortical-striatal functional connectivity in children with primary complex motor stereotypies.

Motor stereotypies are rhythmic, repetitive, prolonged, predictable, and purposeless movements that stop with distraction. Although once believed to occur only in children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, the presence and persistence of complex motor stereotypies (CMS) in otherwise typically developing children (primary CMS) has been well-established. Little, however, is known about the underlying pathophysiology of these unwanted actions. The aim of the present study was to use resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate functional connectivity within fron

Altered functional connectivity in adolescent anorexia nervosa is related to age and cortical thickness.

INTRODUCTION: Functional networks develop throughout adolescence when anorexia nervosa (AN) normally debuts. In AN, cerebral structural alterations are found in most brain regions and may be related to the observed functional brain changes. Few studies have investigated the functional networks of the brain in adolescent AN patients.. The aim of this explorative study was to investigate multiple functional networks in adolescent AN patients compared to healthy age-matched controls (HC) and the relationship with age, eating disorder symptoms and structural alterations. METHODS: Included were 29

Functional Connectomics and Disease Progression in Drug-Naïve Parkinson's Disease Patients.

BACKGROUND: Functional brain connectivity alterations may be detectable even before the occurrence of brain atrophy, indicating their potential as early markers of pathological processes. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the whole-brain network topologic organization of the functional connectome in a large cohort of drug-naïve Parkinson's disease (PD) patients using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and to explore whether baseline connectivity changes may predict clinical progression. METHODS: One hundred and forty-seven drug-naïve, cognitively unimpaired PD patients were e

Analysis of Dynamic Network Reconfiguration in Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Based Multilayer Network.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been reported exist abnormal topology structure in the brain network. However, these studies often treated the brain as a static monolithic structure, and dynamic characteristics were ignored. Here, we investigated how the dynamic network reconfiguration in ADHD patients differs from that in healthy people. Specifically, we acquired resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from a public dataset including 40 ADHD patients and 50 healthy people. A novel model of a "time-varying multilayer network" and metrics of recruitment and

Altered Amygdala-prefrontal Connectivity in Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain: Resting-state fMRI and Dynamic Causal Modelling Study.

Chronic nonspecific low back pain (cNLBP) is a leading contributor to disease burden worldwide that is difficult to treat due to its nonspecific aetiology and complexity. The amygdala is a complex of structurally and functionally heterogeneous nuclei that serve as a key neural substrate for the interactions between pain and negative affective states. However, whether the functions of amygdalar subcomponents are differentially altered in cNLBP remains unknown. Little attention has focused on effective connectivity of the amygdala with the cortex in cNLBP. In this study, thirty-three patients wi

Regulation of depression-related behaviors by GABAergic neurons in the lateral septum through periaqueductal gray neuronal projections.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious and widespread mental illness worldwide. The abnormality of neuronal networks may contribute to the etiology of MDD. However, the neural connections underlying the main symptoms of MDD need further elucidation. Here, we found that GABAergic neurons in the lateral septum (LS) were activated by chronic unpredictable stress (CUS), with increased numbers of ΔFosB-labeled neurons. LS neuronal activity was modulated using a chemogenetic approach. Activation of LS neurons caused a depressive phenotype, as shown by increased immobility in the forced swim te

Structural and functional brain networks of individual differences in trait anger and anger control: An unsupervised machine learning study.

The ability to experience, use and eventually control anger is crucial to maintain well-being and build healthy relationships. Despite its relevance, the neural mechanisms behind individual differences in experiencing and controlling anger are poorly understood. To elucidate these points, we employed an unsupervised machine learning approach based on independent component analysis to test the hypothesis that specific functional and structural networks are associated with individual differences in trait anger and anger control. Structural and functional resting state images of 71 subjects as we

Parcellation-based modeling of the supplementary motor area.

INTRODUCTION: The supplementary motor area (SMA) plays an important role in the initiation and coordination of internally and externally cued movements. Such movements include reaching, grasping, speaking, and bilateral hand coordination. While many studies discuss the SMA and its relationship to other parts of the motor network, there is minimal literature examining the connectivity of the SMA outside of the motor network. Using region-based fMRI studies, we built a neuroanatomical model to account for these extra-motor connections. METHODS: Thirty region-based fMRI studies were used to gene

Topography of the Anxious Self: Abnormal Rest-Task Modulation in Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by social anxiety/fear, self-attention, and interoception. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrate increased activity during symptom-sensitive tasks in regions of the default-mode network (DMN), amygdala (AMG), and salience network (SN). What is the source of this task-unspecific symptom-sensitive hyperactivity in DMN? We address this question by probing SAD resting state (rs) changes in DMN including their relation to other regions as possible source of task-unspecific hyperactivity in the same regions. Our findings show the fol

Altered dynamics of the prefrontal networks are associated with the risk for postpartum psychosis: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Postpartum psychosis (PP) is a severe mental disorder that affects women in the first few weeks after delivery. To date there are no biomarkers that distinguish which women at risk (AR) develop a significant psychiatric relapse postpartum. While altered brain connectivity may contribute to the risk for psychoses unrelated to the puerperium, this remains unexplored in PP. We followed up 32 AR and 27 healthy (HC) women from pregnancy to 8-week postpartum. At this point, we classified women as AR-unwell (n = 15) if they had developed a psychiatric relapse meeting DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, or im

Negative motor networks: Electric cortical stimulation and diffusion tensor imaging.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the networks of Negative motor areas (NMAs) using electric cortical stimulation and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: Twelve patients with intractable focal epilepsy, in which NMAs were identified by electrical cortical stimulation, were enrolled in this study. Electric stimulation at 50Hz was applied to the electrodes during motor tasks to identify the NMAs. DTI was used to identify the subcortical fibers originating from the NMAs found by electrical stimulation. RESULTS: NMAs were found in lateral frontal areas (premotor area (PM) and precentral

Altered functional connectivity of the thalamus induced by modified electroconvulsive therapy for schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been shown to be effective in schizophrenia (SZ), particularly in drug-refractory cases or when rapid symptom relief is needed. However, its precise mechanisms of action remain largely unclear. To clarify the mechanisms underlying modified electroconvulsive therapy (mECT) for SZ, we conducted a longitudinal cohort study evaluating functional connectivity of the thalamus before and after mECT treatment using sub-regions of thalamus as regions of interest (ROIs). METHODS: Twenty-one SZ individuals taking only antipsychotics (DSZ group) for 4 weeks

Prism Adaptation Modulates Connectivity of the Intraparietal Sulcus with Multiple Brain Networks.

Prism adaptation (PA) alters spatial cognition according to the direction of visual displacement by temporarily modifying sensorimotor mapping. Right-shifting prisms (right PA) improve neglect of left visual field in patients, possibly by decreasing activity in the left hemisphere and increasing it in the right. Left PA shifts attention rightward in healthy individuals by an opposite mechanism. However, functional imaging studies of PA are inconsistent, perhaps because of differing activation tasks. We measured resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) in healthy individuals before and afte

Improvement in prefrontal thalamic connectivity during the early course of the illness in recent-onset psychosis: a 12-month longitudinal follow-up resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has shown a mixed pattern of disrupted thalamocortical connectivity in psychosis. The clinical meaning of these findings and their stability over time remains unclear. We aimed to study thalamocortical connectivity longitudinally over a 1-year period in participants with recent-onset psychosis. METHODS: To this purpose, 129 individuals with recent-onset psychosis and 87 controls were clinically evaluated and scanned using rs-fMRI. Among them, 43 patients and 40 controls were re-scanned and re-evalua

Sleep inconsistency between weekends and weekdays is associated with changes in brain function during task and rest.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep deprivation and circadian disruptions impair brain function and cognitive performance, but few studies have examined the effect of sleep inconsistency. Here, we investigated how inconsistent sleep duration and sleep timing between weekends (WE) and weekdays (WD) correlated with changes in behavior and brain function during task and at rest in 56 (30 female) healthy human participants. METHODS: WE-WD differences in sleep duration and sleep midpoint were calculated using 1-week actigraphy data. All participants underwent 3 Tesla blood-oxygen-level-dependent functional Ma

Greater functional connectivity within the cingulo-opercular and ventral attention networks is related to better fluent reading: A resting-state functional connectivity study.

Executive functions are higher-order cognitive abilities that affect many of our daily actions, including reading. A two-system model for cognitive control comprises a bottom-up system composed of the dorsal and ventral attention networks and a more evolved top-down system involving the frontoparietal and cingulo-opercular networks. We examined both within- and between-network functional connectivity of these four networks in 26 8-12-year-old children with readong difficulties and 30 age-matched typical readers using resting-state functional MRI. Fluency and nonfluency behavioral reading measu

EEG and MEG primers for tracking DBS network effects.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment method for a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It involves implantation of stimulating electrodes in a precisely guided fashion into subcortical structures and, at a later stage, chronic stimulation of these structures with an implantable pulse generator. While the DBS surgery makes it possible to both record brain activity and stimulate parts of the brain that are difficult to reach with non-invasive techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) provide complementary information from other brain
