Dysfunctional variants of ABCG2 create strong individual and population risks for progression of hyperuricemia: the potential for implementation of genome-personalized nursing.

Gout, a common disease, develops after prolonged hyperuricemia with elevated serum uric acid (SUA) levels. Sex, overweight/obesity, heavy drinking, and aging all increase risk. Common dysfunctional variants (polymorphisms) in the ABCG2/BCRP gene are major genetic causes of gout/hyperuricemia. Early management would thus have potential benefits for public health. Several studies report the effectiveness of nurse-led care for gout management. We evaluate here the individual and population genetic effects of ABCG2 in 9244 Japanese study participants, in all of whom ABCG2 variants had a higher pop

Facilitators and Barriers to the Implementation of a Digital Pain Assessment Tool in Pediatric Oncology Practice: A Qualitative Evaluation of a Quality Improvement Project.

Background: Most children and adolescents with cancer experience acute pain, and many experience longer-lasting chronic pain, negatively impacting health-related quality of life and resulting in long-term morbidity. Digital apps can aid in enhancing pain assessment and management by offering children and adolescents with cancer an accessible tool to describe their pain as a multifaceted biopsychosocial construct. Pain Squad is a useable, acceptable, and psychometrically sound multidimensional cancer pain assessment app for children and adolescents with cancer. This project aimed to evaluate th

Eat Walk Engage: Enabling acute care teams to deliver consistent fundamentals of care for older people.

AIMS: Fundamentals of care are particularly important for older people in acute inpatient settings, who are at increased risk of serious hospital-associated complications like delirium and functional decline. These complications occur due to interactions between clinical complexity and the complex processes and context of hospital care and can be reduced by consistent attention to the fundamentals of care. This paper aims to illustrate of how multi-level nursing leadership of fundamentals of care can be supported to emerge within complex multidisciplinary delivery systems in acute care. DESIG

Engaging Service Users in Co-Designing a Nurse-Led Weight Talk Tool for Low- and Medium-Secure Mental Health Inpatient Settings: A Participatory Intervention Development Study.

Approximately 80% of individuals in secure mental health units are overweight or obese, yet nurses often lack practical guidance on how to initiate and sustain weight-related conversations in these complex settings. This study aimed to co-design an evidence-based, nurse-led weight talk tool with service users and nursing staff, and to evaluate its acceptability and usability in low- and medium-secure inpatient care. A multi-stage, iterative design was undertaken. Initial evidence informed development, followed by a person-centred co-design process involving service users and staff through work

Child neglect and abuse: a global glimpse within the framework of evidence perspective.

AIM: This systematic review was conducted in order to integrate evidence-based knowledge and experience related to child neglect and abuse into the nursing literature. BACKGROUND: The negative and intense effects of neglect and abuse on an individual can last into adulthood. Nurses who are in close contact with such cases have an important role to play in detecting child neglect and abuse and supporting the families involved. When nurses fulfil this role, it is important that evidence-based information and interventions are known to ensure that the process is a healthy one. DATA SOURCES: Med

Effect of Triage Nurse Initiated Radiography Using the Ottawa Ankle Rules on Emergency Department Length of Stay at a Tertiary Centre.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of triage nurse initiated radiographs using the Ottawa Ankle Rules (OAR) on emergency department (ED) throughput. We hypothesized OAR use would reduce median ED length of stay (LOS) by 25 minutes or more. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at a tertiary centre ED with an annual census of over 90,000 patients. Adult patients presenting within 10 days of isolated blunt ankle trauma were eligible. Participants were randomly assigned to standard triage or OAR application by 15 explicitly trained triage nurses. Our primary outcome was ED LOS. Se

Can curative or life-sustaining treatment be withheld or withdrawn? The opinions and views of Indian palliative-care nurses and physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Decisions to withdraw or withhold curative or life-sustaining treatment can have a huge impact on the symptoms which the palliative-care team has to control. Palliative-care patients and their relatives may also turn to palliative-care physicians and nurses for advice regarding these treatments. We wanted to assess Indian palliative-care nurses and physicians' attitudes towards withholding and withdrawal of curative or life-sustaining treatment. METHOD: From May to September 2008, we interviewed 14 physicians and 13 nurses working in different palliative-care programmes in New D

Gender-based discrimination shapes psychological safety and professional identity in clinical settings: a qualitative study of nursing, midwifery, and medical students.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based discrimination remains a persistent structural challenge in health professions education and may shape students' access to learning opportunities, sense of belonging, and professional identity formation. Psychological safety is essential for participation in clinical learning; however, little is known about how gendered experiences are perceived to influence psychological safety, professional identity, and resilience among nursing, midwifery, and medical students. METHODS: This qualitative study explored how nursing, midwifery, and medical students experience gender-b

Pressure ulcer PUSH score and traditional nursing assessment in nursing home residents: do they correlate?

BACKGROUND: Over a decade ago, the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP, 1997) recommended a new tool, the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) tool to document ulcers and monitor the healing process. Yet, traditional nursing observation remains standard practice in chronic care, thus prompting this correlational study between PUSH and traditional documentation of pressure ulcers. METHODS: Data were cross-tabulated through a retrospective chart review of all residents with stage II-IV decubiti at a 672-bed skilled nursing facility, between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2006. Implications of policy and management decisions on access, quality, and the type of services for the elderly in the United States.

America has no conscious overall health policy. What we have is a system which encourages doctors to perform medical procedures on people, especially in hospitals, and which places little or no emphasis on a person's responsibility for his or her own health. There is no incentive whatsoever for doctors, except in HMOs, to provide the elderly with primary care or consultations on preventative health care. there is no reimbursement under Medicare for this type of service, and a financial disincentive exists for the doctor in that a healthier patient is less likely to use a physician's services.

Development and Validation of the Health Belief Model-Based Occupational Exposure Risk Perception Scale for Nursing Staff.

BACKGROUND: Nursing staff frequently encounter serious occupational exposure risks that may adversely affect both their physical well-being and mental health. Their awareness of these risks plays a pivotal role in shaping protective behaviors and influencing how they recognize and respond to workplace hazards. However, existing assessment tools have several limitations, including a lack of robust theoretical foundation and an inability to reflect the complexity of contemporary clinical environments. METHODS: This multiphase study developed and validated a scale based on the Health Belief Mode
