Ultrastructural and histochemical properties of the olfactory system in the japanese jungle crow, Corvus macrorhynchos.

Although it has been commonly believed that birds are more dependent on the vision and audition than the olfaction, recent studies indicate … f the nasal cavity (NC) and had the histological and ultrastructural features like other birds. The olfactory bulb (OB) of the crow was remarkably small and did not possess the olfactory ventricle. The left and right halves of the OB were fused in many cases. In the lectin histochemistry, soybean agglutinin (SBA) and Vicia villosa agglutinin (VVA) stained a smal …

The olfactory organ modulates gonadotropin-releasing hormone types and nest-building behavior in the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.

Direct olfactory inputs to any of the known gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) containing neurons have not been demonstrated. Therefore, … tes. DiI application to the olfactory nerve labeled inputs primarily to the glomerular layer of the olfactory bulbs and extrabulbar inputs to the forebrain but not to GnRH neurons. These results provide evidence that the olfactory rosette is crucial for modulating nest-building behavior through second-order olfactory pathways interacting with GnRH1 and GnRH2 neu …

Olfactory ensheathing cells are the main phagocytic cells that remove axon debris during early development of the olfactory system.

During development of the primary olfactory system, axon targeting is inaccurate and axons inappropriately project within the target layer or overproject into the deeper layers of the olfactory bulb. As a consequence there is considerable apoptosis of primary olfactory neurons during embryonic and postnatal development and axons of the degraded neurons need to be removed. Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are the glia of the primary olfactory nerve and are known to phagocytose axon debris in the adult and postnatal animal. However, it is unclear when phagocytosis by OECs first commences. We i…

The arrest of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone neuronal migration in the genetic arhinencephalic mouse embryo (Pdn/Pdn).

From previous observations, it was suggested that non-attachment of the olfactory nerve to the telencephalon blocked the induction of the olfactory bulbs in genetic arhinencephalic mouse embryos (Pdn/Pdn). The olfactory nerve ends in a tangle beneath the forebrain in these embryos. From these observations, we speculated that the migration of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) neurons might be disturbed in the olfactory nerve. A mass of LHRH neurons was observed in the end of the olfactory nerve fibers, but LHRH neurons were found in the hypothalamus in Pdn/Pdn embryos on day 16 of ge…

Orthodromic field potentials and recurrent inhibition during anoxia in turtle brain.

Recent evidence suggests that suppression of electrical activity, with the likely reduction of energy use, provides a necessary strategy for prolonged anoxic tolerance of turtle brain. The present study was aimed toward defining mechanisms underlying anoxia-induced suppression of electrical activity in turtle brain. Goals were to determine whether effects of anoxia were selective to excitatory or inhibitory processes and to test the hypothesis that enhanced inhibition underlies suppression of orthodromic field potentials in olfactory bulb. Amplitudes of "conditioning" and "test" responses, pro…

A systematic-review of olfactory deficits in neurodevelopmental disorders: From mouse to human.

Olfactory impairment is a common clinical motif across neurodevelopmental disorders, suggesting olfactory circuits are particularly vulnerable to disease processes and can provide insight into underlying disease mechanisms. The mouse olfactory bulb is an ideal model system to study mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disease due to its anatomical accessibility, behavioral relevance, ease of measuring circuit input and output, and the feature of adult neurogenesis. Despite the clinical relevance and experimental benefits, olfactory testing across animal models of neurodevelopmental disease has bee…

Intraglomerular inhibition maintains mitral cell response contrast across input frequencies.

Odor signals are transmitted to the olfactory bulb by olfactory nerve (ON) synapses onto mitral/tufted cells (MTCs) and external tufted cells (ETCs); ETCs provide additional feed-forward excitation to MTCs. Both are strongly regulated by intraglomerular inhibition that can last up to 1 s and, when blocked, dramatically increases ON-evoked MC spiking. Intraglomerular inhibition thus limits the magnitude and duration of MC spike responses to sensory input. In vivo, sensory input is repetitive, dictated by sniffing rates from 1 to 8 Hz, potentially summing intraglomerular inhibition. To investiga…

Olfactory networks: from sensation to perception.

Olfactory networks, comprised of sensory neurons and interneurons, detect and process changes in the chemical environment to drive animal behavior. Recent studies combining genetics with behavioral analyses and imaging in worms, flies and mice have revealed new insights into the mechanisms of olfaction. In this discussion, we focus on three interesting findings. First, sensory neuron responses to odor are modulated by neuropeptides. This modulation might serve to extend the range of responses of the sensory neurons and also to integrate internal state information into the chemosensory circuit.

Ultrastructural organization of receptor cell axons in frog olfactory nerve.

Repeated odorant or electrical stimulation of the frog olfactory nerve leads to long-lasting reduction of excitability of the receptor neurons. In the turtle olfactory nerve electrical stimulation causes an increase in extracellular potassium concentration due to the efflux of potassium from active axons. Elevated potassium concentration depolarizes an axon membrane and inactivates it. If axons travel parallel to each other in the nerve for extended distances, changes in ionic concentration due to activity in one axon will reduce excitability of its neighbors. This phenomenon may have effects

Effect of anosmia on reproduction in male and female wolves (Canis lupus).

Anosmia was produced in two female and three male wolves by transection of the olfactory peduncle and was confirmed by their inability to detect meat, urine, feces, anal-gland secretions, and fish emulsion. All operated animals continued to investigate the environment with their noses, to interact normally with other pack members, and to feed at levels which maintained presurgical body weights. No effect was found on reproductive physiology (females: estradiol or progesterone concentrations, ovulation, pregnancy or parturition; males: testosterone, testicular recrudescence or sperm numbers, mo

The risk of olfactory disturbance from conchal plate injury during ethmoidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Even though the olfactory function usually is improved or unchanged after ethmoidectomy, some patients complain of olfactory disturbance, which may be caused by direct injury to the olfactory nerves. However, the detailed anatomic pathway of the olfactory nerves that leave the olfactory mucosa and after going through the cribriform plate insert into the olfactory bulb is uncertain. In the studies of lateral nasal wall, we referred to the thin bone that connects the middle, superior, and supreme turbinates to the skull base as the "conchal plate." We undertook this study to determin…

Virtual reconstruction of cranial endocasts of traversodontid cynodonts (Eucynodontia: Gomphodontia) from the upper Triassic of Southern Brazil.

The brain endocasts of the late Triassic (Carnian) traversodontids (Eucynodontia: Gomphodontia) Siriusgnathus niemeyerorum and Exaeretodon riograndensis from southern Brazil are described based on virtual models generated using computed tomography scan data. Their skull anatomy resembles that of other non-mammaliaform cynodonts, showing an endocranial cavity that is not fully ossified. A "V-shaped" orbitosphenoid, neither fully developed nor ossified is present in E. riograndensis. The nasal cavity is confluent with the encephalic cavity. Thus, the anterior limit of the olfactory bulbs is not …
