The vagus nerve innervates many organs, and most, if not all, of its motor fibers are cholinergic. However, no one knows its organizing prin … c neurons within discrete subregions of the gastrointestinal tract. This discovery reveals that the parasympathetic nervous system utilizes a striking division of labor to control autonomic function.

Harsh parenting is a significant predictor of youth aggression and delinquency. However, not every child exposed to adverse parenting develops such problem behaviors. Recent developmental evolutionary models suggest that variability in stress response reactivity to parenting, reflected by autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning, may affect the impact of adverse parenting on youth behavioral adjustment. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the ANS moderate the association between parenting and aggressive and delinquent behavi

Patients with anxiety disorders have a lower heart rate variability (HRV) than healthy controls. Low HRV is associated with cardiovascular disease and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The aim of the present study was to investigate if HRV in patients with agoraphobia with or without panic disorder can be influenced by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). 73 patients with agoraphobia with or without panic disorder were included in the study. Heart rate (HR) and HRV were recorded at rest before and after CBT and during in-vivo exposure. No changes in HR and HRV were observed thr

Thought to be an autoimmune inflammatory CNS disease, multiple sclerosis (MS) involves multiple pathologies with heterogeneous clinical presentations. An impaired neurovisceral integration of cardiovascular modulation, indicated by sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, is among common MS clinical presentations. ANS dysfunction could not only enhance MS inflammatory and neurodegenerative processes, but can also lead to clinical symptoms such as depression, fatigue, sleep disorder, migraine, osteoporosis, and cerebral hemodynamic impairments. Therefore, fact

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that almost exclusively involves motor neurons although autonomic dysfunction has also been reported. We present an 84-year-old female with no documented history of heart disease, who was admitted with negative T waves in the electrocardiogram precordial leads mimicking myocardial ischaemia. No other abnormalities were shown in the rest of the cardiologic evaluation, suggesting autonomic nervous system dysfunction. A neurophysiological study demonstrated acute and chronic denervation in multiple muscles with normal

Evidence indicates that activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) suppresses physiological responses associated with motion sickness. Research also shows paced breathing increases PNS activation; the current study examines the use of paced diaphragmatic breathing (DB) training to quell motion sickness symptoms. Healthy participants (N = 60) were pre-screened for motion sickness susceptibility. Participants were then randomly assigned to either a control condition, focusing on environmental awareness, or to an experimental condition implementing paced DB. Following this, participan…

One of the hallmarks of type 2 diabetes is that pancreatic beta cells fail to release sufficient amounts of insulin in the presence of elevated blood glucose levels. Insulin secretion is modulated by many hormones and neurotransmitters including acetylcholine, the major neurotransmitter of the peripheral parasympathetic nervous system. The physiological role of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors expressed by pancreatic beta cells remains unclear at present. Here, we demonstrate that mutant mice selectively lacking the M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtype in pancreatic beta cells displa…

Urinary continence and voiding are complex physiological processes and require the coordination of all three efferent areas of the nervous system (parasympathetic, sympathetic, somatic). The pudendal nerve contains efferent as well as afferent fibers, the former ones having their origin in Onuf's nucleus. A number of studies see a link in the central modulation of lower urinary tract activity through 5-HT and NE receptor agonists as well as antagonists. Previous information about the modulation of the lower urinary tract in humans has been obtained from animal experiments. Duloxetin, a combine

The physiological sexual excitation is mediated both by the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system. The antagonism between testosterone (Tt) and estrogens (Es) as well as the fact that the dynamics of the sexual excitation in the male are antagonistic to those in the female are nowadays well-known; hence, the hypothesis was emitted that the sympathoparasympathetic sexual excitation is bihormonal mediated, consisting in a very active sexual hormone associated with a weak antagonistic hormone. Most studies show a serotonergic (ejaculatory) involvement in premature ejaculation (PE). N…

Twenty-seven members of a family with dominantly inherited Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTD) were examined. Fifteen members had CMTD and 13 of these had varying amounts of myotonic pupillary abnormalities similar in some ways to Adie tonic pupil syndrome. Those with graver neurologic disease showed greater pupillary abnormalities. Ten of the 15 patients had pupillary constriction with methacholine chloride (Mecholyl) and some of these had extensive iris atrophy. Several affected patients received symptomatic relief from 0.025% pilocarpine. Seven other patients with CMTD who were not related t

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gasotransmitter that contributes to the regulation of peripheral nervous system (PNS) function. H2S is produced by several enzymes whose expression changes under different physiological and pathological conditions, influencing how peripheral neurons respond to environmental and internal signals. H2S modulates neuronal excitability through its actions on ion channels and through interactions with other gasotransmitters, shaping sensory, autonomic, and pain-related pathways. In autonomic circuits, H2S adjusts sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. Through these act

The facial nerve is the seventh cranial nerve and consists of motor, parasympathetic and sensory branches, which arise from the brainstem through 3 different nuclei (1). After leaving the brainstem, the facial nerve divides into 5 intracranial segments (cisternal, canalicular, labyrinthine, tympanic, and mastoid) and continues as the intraparotid extracranial segment (2). A wide variety of pathologies, including congenital abnormalities, traumatic disorders, infectious and inflammatory disease, and neoplastic conditions, can affect the facial nerve along its pathway and lead to weakness or p

Kidney diseases are associated with many cardiovascular risk factors, such as anaemia, inflammation and chronic volume overload. Changes in the sympathovagal balance are common findings in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In particular, sympathetic hyperactivity is linked with an increase in resting heart rate leading to myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis. The latter increases the risk of sudden cardiac death from fatal arrythmias and therefore assessment of both sympathetic and parasympathetic tones could be clinically relevant in ESRD patients. Heart rate variability and other

In the past two decades, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA)-an index of parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)-mediated cardiac control-has emerged as a reliable peripheral biomarker of emotion regulation (ER). Reduced RSA and excessive RSA reactivity (i.e., withdrawal) to emotional challenge are observed consistently among individuals with poor ER capabilities, including those with various forms of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, and those with specific psychopathological syndromes, including anxiety, phobias, attention problems, autism, callousness, conduct disorder, depressio…

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous active vasodilatation is a cholinergic nerve mediated function of the sympathetic nervous system and the disturbed function of cholinergic neurotransmission is known as a prominent feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
METHODS: To assess this relationship, skin blood flow (SkBF) and other haemodynamic parameters were determined by a simple vasodilatory test, isometric handgrip exercise (IHG), in 22 late-onset sporadic type AD and 20 aged control persons (AC).
RESULTS: Significantly higher cutaneous vascular resistance and decreased SkBF were found after the stimulus in t

Ten narcoleptic patients that had never been treated previously and ten healthy volunteers of comparable age underwent 48-h polygraphic recording to assess the effects of wakefulness and sleep on beat-to-beat heart rate variability by means of power spectrum analysis. The study revealed decreased power in the low frequencies (LF) during sleep (whereby an increase of the power in this band is associated with sympathetic activation) compared with wakefulness, with minimal values during stage 3-4 non-REM sleep and higher levels during REM sleep, both in patients and controls. Significantly reduce

Disturbances of autonomic nervous system functions are common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and may develop as a result of pathology in centers of autonomic regulation such as the hypothalamus, brainstem, and sympathetic ganglia. We examined the relationship between the degree of motor disability, as determined from the Hoehn and Yahr scale (1967), and the presence of pandysautonomia, as determined by the assessment of noninvasive cardiovascular reflexes, in 29 unmedicated PD patients (mean age: 72.0 years, SD = 8.9). In addition, we investigated the relationship of pandysautonomia

A 29-year-old man without organic heart disease who had a history of six episodes of syncope following sudden cessation of strenuous exercise over the last 18 years was reported. Resting electrocardiogram and 24-hour electrocardiographic monitoring did not show any rhythm disturbance or ischemic changes. Sinus node recovery time, sinoatrial conduction time and A-V conduction were normal on electrophysiologic study. Asystole with syncope occurred immediately following sudden cessation of strenuous exercise and following release of intrathoracic pressure during Valsalva's maneuver performed afte

We examined the patterns of coexistence of immunoreactivity to the neurokinin-1 (NK(1)) tachykinin receptor, nitric oxide synthase, and neuropeptides in the sphenopalatine and otic ganglia of guinea pigs using a combination of multiple-labeling immunohistochemistry and pathway tracing in vitro. Most neurons had immunoreactivity to vasoactive intestinal peptide (85-96%) and neuropeptide Y (60%). Subpopulations of vasoactive intestinal peptide-immunoreactive neurons also had immunoreactivity to nitric oxide synthase (37-48%) or enkephalin (25-35%), but these formed mutually exclusive populations
