Folliculotropic Metastatic Melanoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Folliculotropic metastasis of cutaneous melanoma is rare, with only 5 published case reports in the English language literature since it was first described in 2009. We report a 41-year-old man with a primary cutaneous melanoma of the right upper preauricular region with metastatic spread to the parotid gland and pulmonary lymph nodes. Excision of the primary lesion was performed and immunotherapy was initiated. Sixteen months later, the patient presented with 2 new lesions of the left forehead and left neck. Histopathological examination was consistent with folliculotropic dermal deposits of

Expression and localization of calpain 3 in the submandibular gland of mice.

OBJECTIVES: Calpains comprise a family of intracellular Ca2+-dependent cysteine proteases and are considered to play roles in various physiological phenomena with limited proteolytic activities against specific substrates. We herein revealed the expression and localization of calpain 3, the muscle-type calpain, in the submandibular gland (SMG) of mice. DESIGN: The expression of the mRNA for conventional, ubiquitous calpains 1 and 2 and skeletal muscle-specific calpain 3 was examined in the major salivary glands of mice using RT-PCR, and the expression and localization of calpain 3 protein was

HLA-alleles associated with increased risk for extra-pulmonary involvement in sarcoidosis.

Genetic factors influence the risk for disease as well as the clinical picture seen in sarcoidosis and especially the genes localized to the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region on chromosome 6 are of importance. The aim of this study was to further investigate associations between HLA-DRB1 alleles and the risk for extra-pulmonary manifestations (EPMs), i.e. engagement of the skin, superficial lymph nodes, eyes, nervous system, kidneys, hypercalcemia, parotid and salivary glands, heart, liver, spleen and bone marrow in Scandinavian sarcoidosis patients. One thousand patients with together with

Clinical significance of surgical resection for the recurrence of esophageal cancer after radical esophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to clarify the clinical significance of surgical resection for recurrent lesions after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. METHODS: Recurrence was detected in 113 of 365 consecutive patients who underwent surgical resection for esophageal cancer, and some treatment was performed for recurrence in 100 of the 113 patients. The treatments were classified into two groups: chemotherapy and/or radiation with surgery (surgery group, n = 14) and chemotherapy and/or radiation without surgery (no surgery group, n = 86). The outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS:

First Bite Syndrome: a little known complication of upper cervical surgery.

INTRODUCTION: First Bite Syndrome (FBS) is a rare pain syndrome sometimes occurring after surgery of the upper cervical region. It presents as excruciating pain, triggered at the beginning of a meal by chewing, swallowing or even simple contact with generally acidic food, waning on subsequent bites and recurring with identical features after pausing for several minutes or at the next meal. OBJECTIVES: Retrospective review of 17 patients who developed FBS after upper cervical surgery. RESULTS: Seventeen patients developed FBS between 1999 and 2010 following surgery for paraganglioma in eight

Treatment of temporomandibular joint ganglion cyst.

Ganglion cysts of the temporomandibular joint are very rare and always misdiagnosed as synovial cyst, parotid gland tumor, or other cystic lesions. They present with pain, swelling, or dysfunction. Image studies could facilitate to identify the tumor mass from the adjacent soft tissue, but a definitive diagnosis could be made from the pathologic report.A 59-year-old woman presented to the clinics with a chief complaint of a painless swelling mass in the right preauricular region of 3-month duration. Computed tomography was performed, which showed a small radiolucent lesion adjacent to the righ

Fine-needle aspiration cytology: a reliable tool in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions.

BACKGROUND: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is used as the main initial diagnostic investigation for lumps in the head and neck region. Major salivary glands and some minor salivary glands are easily accessible; therefore, they are optimal targets for FNAC. The aim of this study was to discuss the advantages and pitfalls of FNAC as compared to histopathology in the salivary gland lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 127 FNAC were carried out on salivary gland lesions from January 2006 to December 2010--a 5-year period. Histopathological follow-up data were obtained in 56 cases. Perineural invasion in adenoid cystic carcinoma: Its causation/promotion by brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a common salivary gland neoplasm with a lengthy clinical course and often late local recurrences after surgical resection. This is accounted for histologically by its infiltrative capacity and distinct propensity for perineural invasion. The expression of biological markers may help explain the clinicopathologic course in ACCs. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a growth factor known to be involved in neurogenesis. The aim of this study is to elucidate the expression of BDNF in ACCs, which is currently unknown. Twenty-nine cases of primary ACCs of the

Mapping of linear epitopes of human papillomavirus type 16: the E1, E2, E4, E5, E6 and E7 open reading frames.

Certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), especially HPV type 16, are associated with proliferative lesions of the cervix uteri that can progress to malignancy. In order to map the linear epitopes of the HPV-encoded proteins, we have synthesized the predicted amino acid sequences of the open reading frames (ORFs) in the early region of HPV 16, as a set of 94 synthetic 20-residue peptides overlapping each other with 5 amino acids. The peptides were tested for reactivity with IgA, IgG and IgM antibodies in the sera of 30 patients with HPV 16-carrying cervical neoplasia. The EI ORF had only lo

Using feasibility dose-volume histograms to reduce intercampus plan quality variability for head-and-neck cancer.

The purpose of this work is to objectively assess variability of intercampus plan quality for head-and-neck (HN) cancer and to test utility of a priori feasibility dose-volume histograms (FDVHs) as planning dose goals. In this study, 109 plans treated from 2017 to 2019 were selected, with 52 from the main campus and 57 from various regional centers. For each patient, the planning computed tomography images and contours were imported into a commercial program to generate FDVHs with a feasibility value (f-value) ranging from 0.0 to 0.5. For 10 selected organs-at-risk (OARs), we used the Dice sim

Pleomorphic adenoma of the parapharyngeal space: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the parapharyngeal space (PPS) are rare, accounting for less than 0.5% of all head and neck neoplasms. Their diagnosis and management remain challenging due to the complex anatomy of this region. Pleomorphic adenoma is an uncommon benign tumor in the PPS and can originate from various structures, most commonly the deep lobe of the parotid gland, but also from ectopic or accessory salivary tissue, and more rarely from minor salivary glands. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice, allowing precise evaluation of the tumor's extent and its relation

Organ-specific local cytokine release syndrome after anti-CD19 CAR-T therapy with salivary gland involvement: a case report, literature review, and a diagnostic alert for tocilizumab-associated cervical swelling.

Background. Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) is the most frequent toxicity after chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy and typically presents as a systemic inflammatory syndrome. In recent years, a localized form of CRS (L-CRS), most commonly involving the craniocervical region, has been increasingly recognized. L-CRS may occur with or without overt local tumor involvement and can progress to airway impairment, requiring prompt recognition and treatment. Case presentation. We report two cases of patients with refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated with anti-CD19 CAR

Refined Concept of Motor Supply to the Medial Periorbital Area Relevant to Periorbital Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Mimetic muscles in the medial periorbital area have been thought to be innervated solely by the angular nerve. Recently, however, the upper medial palpebral branch and lower palpebral branch were reported as additional motor suppliers in this area. This study aimed to define all the motor nerve systems passing through the medial canthal area. METHODS: Motor nerve branches that passed through the medial canthal region were identified and traced thoroughly from the parotid gland to their destinations under a surgical microscopic field in 74 hemifaces. The courses, anatomical positio
