DiGeorge's syndrome is characterized by partial or complete absence of the parathyroid and thymus glands and is often associated with other developmental anomalies, particularly of the structures arising from the third and fourth pharyngeal pouches. The temporal bone findings in three cases of DiGeorge's syndrome are presented. Patients with this condition have a high incidence of Mondini dysplasia in both ears, sometimes with other anomalies of the external or middle ears. Hearing may range from normal to profound deafness and may manifest sensorineural, conductive, or mixed losses of varying

We examined clinical and laboratory data and the liver pathology of 48 patients in whom porphyria cutanea tarda was related to alcohol ingestion, estrogen use and pregnancy, or was idiopathic. Biochemical test results, when abnormal, tended to be mild in most cases, with less than two-fold elevations of serum aminotransferases and alkaline phosphatase and mild hyperbilirubinemia. Fatty change, liver cell and Kupffer cell hemosiderosis and glycogenation of hepatocyte nuclei were frequent histologic findings in the 58 liver specimens studied. Alcoholic hepatitis, chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis …

Selected examples of animal models for human connective tissue diseases are reviewed, with emphasis on those which can be verified by genetic, immunologic, and biochemical studies. Desnick et al. have stated that the study of animal models in inborn errors of metabolism will "have a dramatic impact on the future development and evaluation of effective therapies for a variety of human enzyme diseases." It is hoped that these discussions, including comments on the importance of animal models for specific human diseases of the connective tissue, will yield significant benefits in human health.

The pathological findings in 50 cases of non-Rhesus hydrops are presented. In 19, pregnancy terminated before the twenty-eighth week of gestation; there were five chromosomally abnormal fetuses and a further six with structural abnormality in this group. Three of 31 infants from the more mature group survived, 16 were stillborn and 12 died in the neonatal period. Nineteen infants had malformations, 14 of these being cardiovascular malformation. Five infants had evidence of intra-uterine infection. Intra-uterine heart failure is the commonest cause of the hydrops.

The histological features of cystoid macular edema in an early stage are demonstrated in the eye of a 54-year-old patient with an active ciliary body melanoma. Separation of the posterior vitreous face and the inner limiting membrane with accumulation of an exudate in the resulting space, petaloid folding of the inner retinal layers, swelling as well as microcystoid degeneration of Henle's fiber layer, and vertical folding of the outer retinal layers with separation of the central cones from the pigment epithelium are observed.

A case of traumatic ocular perforation and aphakia resulting in enucleation after six weeks is used to demonstrate histopathological details of an early stage of a typical foveal involvement with grossly visible petaloid swelling of the central retina, separation of the inner limiting membrane with some exudate, massive swelling and early cystoid degeneration of Henle's fiber layer and a vertical retinal fold of the outer retinal layers extending downward from the foveola. This demonstration is important in view of its possible relationship to the clinical entity of cystoid macular edema.

Literature review and report of personal cases concerning the ocular physiopathological problems of pregnant women. Are studied especially chorioretinal perturbations: surgical and medical retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, choroiditis with pseudohistoplasmosis and toxoplasmosis. Are also studied the variations of the visual acuity, ocular tumors and pituitary tumors.

Circulatory disorders, which are well documented in most parts of the human body, are not well documented in the inner ear, although they are expected to occur. It has been previously shown that experimental occlusion of the labyrinthine artery in animals results in severe degenerative changes, fibrosis, and new bone formation in the cochlea. Accordingly, this paper presents presumptive evidence that depriving the human cochlea of its blood supply after surgical removal of an acoustic tumor results in severe degenerative changes that progress to total ossification of the cochlear spaces. This

Analysis of 374 cases of enchondroma, 42% of which were localized in the short bones of the hand. The findings in radiology and pathology are presented and discussed, with special attention to the difficulty of classifying these tumors histologically and distinguishing them from chondrosarcoma. The recurrence rate in the short bones of the hand was 9%, and 19% in the long tubular bones. It was especially high after mere currettage of the tumor.

A case of pseudohypoparathyroidism has been investigated. Indirect evidence allows to eliminate a defect of renal 1 alpha-hydroxylase as the determining factor of this condition. Similarly, the increased size of the mean surface area of the cross-section of periosteocytic lacunae, as determined on decalcified sections of bone obtained by transiliac biopsy, shows the osteocytes to be sensitive to the endogenous PTH, discarding cAMP response to PTH in bone as a prerequisite for PTH action on bone. The authors conclude from these data and from previous experiments that the defect of parathyroid f
