Recovering alcoholic fathers with a positive family history of alcoholism and their 10-15 year-old sons were assessed on a variety of personality measures and compared to a matched group of nonalcoholic fathers with a negative family history of alcoholism, and their sons. Assessment instruments for the sons included the Personality Inventory for Children, High School Personality Questionnaire, Junior Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire. Comparable questionnaires were administered to the fathers: the MMPI, 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire, Eysenck P

Male pupils identified as behaviorally disordered, learning disabled, and educable mentally retarded, as well as nonidentified normal boys, were rated by their teachers on the Behavior Problem Checklist. Analyses of the ratings indicated significant differences for pupil category, Behavior Problem Checklist dimension, and category by dimension interaction, but no significant differences for age alone or in interaction with other factors. Categories of pupils were best discriminated from one another on the basis of Conduct Disorder and Personality Problem dimensions of the Behavior Problem Chec

Among the psychotic symptoms in juvenile drug-consumers one can find autonomous, i.e. drug-independent developments, whose connection with the drug-abuse is to be assessed in differing ways. A beginning psychosis can be modified in its actual symptoms by drug-consumption. On the other hand one must consider the manifestation of a latent psychosis or purely symptomatic psychosis, which, in its symptoms, can hardly be distinguished from schizophrenia. Finally drug-induced personality-changes can develop together with secondary psychotic symptoms. Psychotic symptoms are determined and influenced

BACKGROUND: Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is the study of the interaction between psychological processes and the nervous and immune systems of the human body. The impact of psychological factors on the immune system and the role of this system in Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) are confirmed. Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is arisen due to the failure of blood and oxygen to the heart tissues.
AIM: The present study aimed to describe psychoneuroimmunological processes which contribute to CAD and CHD progression.
METHOD: Such psychological risk factors like stress, depression and type D personality

The present study extends previous cross-sectional findings by examining the predictive validity of positive and negative schizotypy in a young adult sample at a three-year follow-up. Schizotypy and schizophrenia share a comparable multidimensional structure with positive and negative dimensions being the most strongly supported factors. Previous cross-sectional and longitudinal studies employing the psychometric high-risk strategy indicated that schizotypy is a useful method for identifying risk and resilience factors for the development of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology. In the prese

The frequent occurrence of depressive symptoms in patients with borderline personality disorder has generated considerable interest in the nature of the relationship between borderline personality disorder and the depressive disorders. Data from the perspectives of phenomenology, biology, family history, course of illness, comorbidity patterns, and treatment response have been brought to bear on the question. Reviews based on research available by 1985 and 1991, respectively, arrived at differing conclusions: (1) that both disorders shared common but non-specific sources, and (2) that the two

Specialized literature and belles lettres have been dealing increasingly with psychographs and biographies of cancer victims for whom a psychopathological condition is assumed to have paved the way for illness. In support of this assumption, authors cite what is supposed to be an unbroken chain of reports on the relationship between melancholy and cancer since antiquity. The fact that the views of ancient medicine have little in common with current understanding of such key concepts as melancholy and hypochondria is revealed by comparing the explanations of these terms from different periods.

In order to evaluate risk factors for adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder ("frozen shoulder') a prospective study was carried out in neurosurgical patients, in whom there is a high incidence of capsulitis. Ninety-nine patients were admitted into the study, most of whom had surgical treatment for sub-arachnoid haemorrhage. Ninety-one patients (92 per cent) were followed up at six months, and of these 23 (25.3 per cent) had developed adhesive capsulitis, which was bilateral in three. Three patients developed the shoulder-hand syndrome. By comparing the patients with capsulitis at six months with

The authors think, that psychological perturbations in women during the period immediately preceding and following childbirth brings about deepseated personality changes that will determine the future relationship between the mother and her child and all subsequent children. Hospitalization of the mother and child together is resorted to in three types of case: for the classic post-partum psychosis, for psychotic mothers showing serious personality troubles, and for early deviations in the mother-child relationship. For most children the alternative is being taken into care, or being placed in

OBJECTIVE: As repetitive behaviours in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) can significantly interfere with one's daily functioning, continued research on these behaviours is needed.
METHODS: This study examined the occurrence of repetitive motor movements in toddlers (17-37 months) with ASD and atypical development and the relationship between stereotypies and sensory impairment.
RESULTS: Children with ASD (n = 13) exhibited significantly more repetitive behaviours than the non-ASD group (n = 12). Greater percentages of endorsement were evident for the ASD group on nearly all ite

'Nurturing the brain' is an emerging research field integrating brain science, child care and education, which also involves child neurology. It has emerged from the recent remarkable progress in brain science and strong social demands for improvements in child care and education. This article reviews the current status of three major research themes in this field. First, developmental disorders represented by attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism and Asperger syndrome often introduce difficulties in child care and education, which are to be addressed by appropriate assessment and t

BACKGROUND: Childhood parental abuse is an established risk factor for adulthood generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), but the personality mechanisms explaining this pathway are underinvestigated. Based on developmental psychopathology and triple vulnerability models, this study evaluated whether neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness mediated the 18-year prospective paths from maternal and paternal abuse to adulthood GAD severity. Each abuse source was tested independently.
METHOD: Community adults (N = 3293) (M age = 45.61 years, standard deviation [SD] = 11.41, range = 20-86; 54.95

AIMS: This meta-analysis synthesizes empirical research on the association between alcohol consumption, operationalized as both volume and frequency, and Five Factor Model of Personality Traits.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on June 18, 2025, in PsycINFO and PubMed. The search strategy employed the following terms: tiab("big 5" OR "big five" OR "5 factor" OR "five factor") AND tiab(alcohol). Studies meeting predefined inclusion criteria were included in both a narrative synthesis and a quantitative meta-analysis.
RESULTS: Six studies met the inclusion criteria and wer

Subjective emptiness is a state characterized by persistent feelings of unfulfillment and disconnection from the external world. Traditionally associated with borderline personality disorder, subjective emptiness is increasingly recognized as a transdiagnostic construct linked to adverse clinical outcomes and substantial psychosocial impairment. Despite its relevance, specific instruments for assessing this construct remain scarce. To address this gap, Price et al. (2022) developed the Subjective Emptiness Scale (SES), a five-item self-report measure designed to capture the core features of em

BACKGROUND: The mental health burden among adolescents has been increasing, impacting individuals even before formal diagnosis of common mental disorders. Although personality traits, as key indicators of mental health conditions, play a crucial role in the development of mental disorders, there is a gap regarding the trait-to-symptom pathways and similarities and differences between adolescents and young adults.
METHODS: A total of 860 adolescents and 1751 young adults participated in this study. The Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory assessed the Big Five traits, while depression and an

There is increasing focus on how to induce and measure positive affective states in animals and the development of social license to operate has brought this to the forefront within equestrianism. This study aimed to utilise a range of methods to induce and measure positive affect in horses in real-world settings. Twenty healthy horses were scored for personality, exposed to four induction methods (wither scratching, high value food provision, positive reinforcement training and the addition of an affiliative conspecific), and data collected on their behaviour (QBA and ethograms) and physiolog

BACKGROUND: The concepts of masculinity and femininity have historically shaped gender roles, leading to inequality and gender-based discrimination. Women's autonomy, defined as the ability to make independent choices across various life domains, remains inadequately measured by existing scales. This study addresses this gap by developing and validating the Women Autonomy Scale (WAS).
METHODS: The development and validation of the WAS involved four phases with a total of 2,252 adult women from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. These phases included exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirm
