Evolution of consanguinity in the Bishopric of Lugo (Spain) from 1900 to 1979.

BACKGROUND: The levels of consanguinity in human populations are known to be influenced by demographic and geographical factors, and by socio-cultural customs that govern spouse choice. Within the general model applicable to the populations of Western Europe, Galicia (north-west Spain) is a region that is especially interesting, due to its geographical and historical peculiarities that could have conditioned its behaviour pattern with respect to consanguinity. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The object of this paper is to analyse the evolution of the consanguinity structure levels in the rural population

[Selected psychosocial factors and the sexual development of girls].

In a group of 771 Czech girls aged 16 to 18 years who were examined by means of an interview, the influence of three psychosocial factors on their sexual development was studied. Through statistical analysis of data it was found that probands living in towns had their first sexual intercourse significantly earlier (p < 0.004) than village girls and further they had more experience with cunnilingus and fellatio. Their level of education and that of both parents was significantly higher than in probands living in villages. However, in the second study we ascertained that sexual development of st

Accelerating birth timing to access cash transfers? Evidence from households in extreme poverty.

There has been a sustained rise in cash transfer programs to the poor, and burgeoning interest in interventions promoting early childhood development. We draw together these trends to study whether open enrolment interventions targeting cash transfers to pregnant mothers unintentionally induce those not pregnant to accelerate birth timing in order to start receiving the cash. Our study context is rural Northern Nigeria, where households have high demand for liquidity because they are reliant on volatile earnings from agriculture, are subject to frequent natural and man-made aggregate shocks, a

Cocoa cultivation as an engine of rural development: Impact on the configuration of livelihoods strategies of rural households in Colombia.

Rural conditions in Colombia have changed in recent years, and rural households have had to redesign their livelihood strategies (LS). Cocoa cultivation has accompanied this process of LS configuration, with a differentiated role in each household. This research analyzes the incidence of cocoa cultivation in the LS of rural households in the Colombian departments of Caquetá, Huila, Meta, and Santander. A semi-structured interview and a survey were applied in 406 rural households with cocoa production, examining the types of household LS, the specific household-level assets for cocoa production

Analysis of household waste production in Ecuador: Limitations for sustainable management in local communities.

Municipal solid waste management is one of the greatest challenges for environmental sustainability and well-being in developing countries, where the infrastructure and financial resources required to carry out such services are often lacking. The design of solutions that adequately respond to local needs must be based on quality information about the quantity and composition of the generated waste and current management practices. This study evaluated domestic waste generation and its management in 81 communities in Ecuador based on sampling at the source and population surveys. An average ho

Modeling how and why aquatic vegetation removal can free rural households from poverty-disease traps.

Infectious disease can reduce labor productivity and incomes, trapping subpopulations in a vicious cycle of ill health and poverty. Efforts to boost African farmers' agricultural production through fertilizer use can inadvertently promote the growth of aquatic vegetation that hosts disease vectors. Recent trials established that removing aquatic vegetation habitat for snail intermediate hosts reduces schistosomiasis infection rates in children, while converting the harvested vegetation into compost boosts agricultural productivity and incomes. We develop a bioeconomic model that interacts an a

Understanding hard-to-reach communities: local perspectives and experiences of trachoma control among the pastoralist Maasai in northern Tanzania.

As progress to eliminate trachoma is made, addressing hard-to-reach communities becomes of greater significance. Areas in Tanzania, inhabited by the Maasai, remain endemic for trachoma. This study assessed the effectiveness of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) through an ethnographic study of trachoma amongst a Maasai community. The MDA experience in the context of the livelihoods of the Maasai in a changing political economy was explored using participant observation and household interviews. Factors influencing MDA effectiveness within five domains were analysed. 1) Terrain of intervention: Hum

Invasion of Wolbachia at the residential block level is associated with local abundance of Stegomyia aegypti, yellow fever mosquito, populations and property attributes.

Wolbachia can suppress dengue and control mosquito populations and this depends on the successful invasion of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes into local populations. Ovitrap data collected during the recent invasion of wMel-infected Stegomyia aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) (Linnaeus) into Gordonvale near Cairns, Australia, were used to identify variables that help predict the success of localized invasion. Based on the variance in Wolbachia frequencies across Gordonvale as well as at another release site at Yorkeys Knob in comparison to simulations, it was estimated that on average 2-4 females con

Opportunity cost of tobacco consumption on household nutrition in India: A state-level analysis.

Background: The consumption of tobacco in low-income countries is linked to poverty and malnutrition, particularly in India, where 14% of the population suffers from undernourishment. This study aims to assess the opportunity costs of tobacco expenditure by quantifying nutritional losses and potential enhancements in household-level food energy status if funds allocated for tobacco were redirected towards food consumption in all Indian states. Database and Methodology: This study is based on secondary data obtained from NSSO 68th Round, 2011-12. The analysis involves the calculation of the cos

Housing and household characteristics associated with malaria vectors abundance and clinical malaria incidence in a semi-urban and a rural area of Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: The risk of malaria transmission varies between rural and urban areas. Environmental characteristics and habitat structure can explain this variation. Understanding these factors is crucial for the informed selection of existing and new vector control tools. This study investigated how housing and household characteristics affect vector abundance and malaria incidence in a semi-urban and rural setting of Burkina Faso. METHODS: CDC light traps were used to sample indoor mosquitoes from July to October 2021 in 355 randomly selected houses in semi-urban and rural areas of the Nouna h
