BACKGROUND: People with serious mental illness are disproportionately affected by smoking and face barriers to accessing smoking cessation treatments in mental health treatment settings. Text-based interventions are cost-effective and represent a widely accessible approach to providing smoking cessation support.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify key factors for adapting text-based cessation interventions for people with serious mental illness who smoke.
METHODS: We recruited 24 adults from mental health programs who had a serious mental illness and currently smoked cigarettes or had quit smoki

Advances in kidney transplantation have transformed survival and quality of life for women with end-stage renal disease, necessitating a focus on long-term health care for this population. Female kidney transplant recipients (KTR) experience a unique spectrum of gynecologic issues shaped by persistent hormonal dysregulation, lifelong immunosuppression, and complex surgical history. These factors contribute to increased rates of abnormal uterine bleeding, endometrial hyperplasia, and early menopause. Furthermore, common conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain, and pelvic organ p

Precision medicine and precision global health in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have not yet been described and could take into account how all known determinants improve diagnostics and treatment for the individual patient. Precision public health would lead to the right intervention in each VL endemic population for control, based on relevant population-based data, vector exposures, reservoirs, socio-economic factors and other determinants. In anthroponotic VL caused by L. donovani, precision may currently be targeted to the regional level in nosogeographic entities that are defined by the int

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a condition affecting reproductive-age women and associated with dysmenorrhea, pelvic organs dysfunction, pelvic pain, and infertility. The real epidemiology of endometriosis remains underestimated. No data are available on prevalence of endometriosis in Kazakhstan. Therefore, the aim of this was to investigate the epidemiology, complications, surgical management approach, and outcomes of endometriosis in Kazakhstan by analyzing large-scale Kazakhstani healthcare data from the Unified Nationwide Electronic Health System (UNEHS).
METHODS: A population-based study a

Alzheimer's disease is the most common dementing illness affecting over 4 million Americans. As the population ages, dentists and other health care providers will be faced with the daunting task of managing an increasing number of people with this disease. Currently, there are no definitive medications to treat this disease, although there are a number of recent drugs which may help to alleviate some symptoms. This article reviews the current medical treatment and the dental concerns which face the dentist, patient, and family. Suggestions for dental management are given along with practical r

It is critical to identify disparities in health care, including orthopaedic pathology, to ensure equitable care across all populations. Recent research shows that White, socially nondeprived, male patients with private insurance are more likely to undergo surgical procedures for rotator cuff disease after a minimum of 6 months of nonoperative management, and race and low income are associated with delays in access to health care and worse outcomes. Moreover, many practitioners and researchers do not record or report important socioeconomic factors. Health care policies must ensure equitable a

People who are homeless are particularly vulnerable to health disparities. Rather than using population statistics to highlight the prevalence or severity of the suffering of people who are homeless, 28 undergraduate students each conducted an in-depth interview with an individual who relied on a local homeless shelter to cope with everyday life. The interview explored the participants' health concerns and strategies for health management. Due to equipment failure and incomplete recording, only 16 interviews are included in this study. The author adopted thematic analysis while focused on pres

After being virtually eradicated in Europe, thousands of cases of measles in the population of Spanish origin have appeared in the last 3 years. We describe the cases diagnosed in the north of Madrid between January and June 2011. A total of 22 cases are reported, 18 of them grouped in 2 outbreaks (2 nurseries). The primary attack rate was 29% in the main outbreak. All cases were in unvaccinated patients (median = 14 months). Genotype D4 was predominant (95%). There was a 45% complication rate and 45% were admitted to hospitals. The Public Health Service recommended isolating cases and vaccina

Over a two-day period in March 1991, more than 23,000 Albanian refugees arrived without warning in the southern Italian port of Brindisi. A simple surveillance system was established within days of their arrival to monitor health problems that were expected to have a high frequency, were of concern to the Italian health care system because of potential spread to the local population, and were susceptible to therapeutic or preventive measures. The most commonly encountered health problems were pediculosis and scabies. Despite poor sanitary conditions, only one outbreak of gastrointestinal disea

INTRODUCTION: Challenges associated with COPD increase patients' risk of physical immobility and emotional distress, perpetuating a cycle of symptomatic living that hinders patients' self-management and adherence to a treatment regimen. There is limited evidence available on how discrete behavioral and health risk factors contribute to the physical and mental distress experienced by people living with COPD.
PURPOSE: This secondary data analysis of 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) sought to identify subgroups of people with COPD who were at the highest risk for physical

RMSF, a tickborne infection caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, produces severe and fatal disease in humans and dogs. Since the beginning of the 21st century, cases have risen dramatically, most notably in Mexico and Brazil, where outbreaks occur in urban centers including cities with populations of > 1,000,000 persons. Reported case fatality rates can exceed 50%. Factors consistent with high case fatality include lack of awareness of disease ecology, limited capacity for diagnosis, and delay in appropriate antimicrobial treatment. The emergence of urban hyperendemic foci has been leveraged by 2

OBJECTIVE: In the absence of national and European guidelines on the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with interstitial lung disease (ILD), the Italian Society of Rheumatology decided to develop national clinical practice guidelines on the management of patients with RA-ILD in accordance with the requirements of the National Guideline System of the National Institute of Health.
METHODS: The development process included a systematic review of the available evidence and its adaptability to the Italian context, followed by a consultation with experts in rheumatology, respiratory diseases,

Insects, ticks, and mites represent a threat to animal health globally, mainly due to their role as vectors of pathogens. Among the most important diseases, those transmitted by mosquitoes (e.g., malaria and arboviral infections) and ticks (e.g., Lyme borreliosis, babesiosis, and viral haemorrhagic fever) have a huge impact on human health. The principal methods available for reducing the public health burden of most vector-borne diseases are vector-based intervention relying to insecticides and acaricides. However, the use of these products is challenged by the introduction of invasive specie

OBJECTIVE: Evidence-based management guidelines for communication and swallowing disorders following pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) are scarcely available, potentially resulting in suboptimal outcomes. To improve clinical care of this population, a multidisciplinary guideline development committee was formed to develop evidence-based recommendation (EBR) and consensus-based recommendation (CBR) for the management of speech, language, and swallowing disorders during the first year of recovery.
METHODS: A 3-round Delphi survey was completed by the committee to reach agreement (80% conse

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional collaborative practice competency (ICPC) is key to providing safe, high-quality, accessible, patient-centred care. Effective delirium management, particularly, requires a multi-component intervention, including the use of interprofessional teams at care point. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom approach for improving ICPC in simulation-based delirium case management.
METHOD: An embedded mixed-methods study was designed to investigate the effects of the flipped classroom approach on health professionals' performance in del
