Evaluation of the association between postural control and sagittal curvature of the spine.

INTRODUCTION: Balance is key to controlling body posture. Balance is typically assessed by measures of the body's vertical orientation, obtained by balancing out the forces acting on different body segments. The ability to maintain balance is assessed by evaluating centre of pressure (CoP) displacement; such assessments are typically used to evaluate responses to a treatment process. PURPOSE OF STUDY: This study evaluated the efficiency of compensatory reactions in children according to the extent of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The study enrolled 312 children…

Spinal postural alignment measurements using markerless digital photography.

BACKGROUND: A device that can measure posture alignment repeatedly is important for the prevention of hyperkyphosis. OBJECTIVE: We devised a markerless measurement method for hyperkyphosis using digital photography and investigated the correlation with other noninvasive measurements and the validity and accuracy of this method. METHODS: The study included 27 participants. The craniovertebral angle in supine (CVAS) and craniohorizontal angle in supine (CHAS) were calculated from digital photographs of the head and neck areas of the studied subjects with ImageJ. The correlations of CVAS and CH…

Influence of visual biofeedback and inherent stability on trunk postural control.

BACKGROUND: For individuals who never achieve independent standing, rehabilitation is focused on trunk posture and balance control. Visual biofeedback has the potential to augment sitting balance training, however previous work in this area has been limited to standing. RESEARCH QUESTION: To what extent do different types of visual biofeedback influence trunk sway in sitting? METHODS: Twelve healthy young adults sat on an articulating bench. During 'sway referencing' trials, the bench tilted up and down in proportion to trunk sway in the frontal plane. This paradigm increased difficulty of t…

Correlations between Malocclusion and Postural Anomalies in Children with Mixed Dentition.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between malocclusion and body posture anomalies. The original sample involved 127 children (45 males and 82 females) with mixed dentition. Clinical examination of oral cavity was performed by an orthodontist, who recorded molar and canine relationship, cross-bite, lower middle-line deviation, and centric relation (CR) considering mono or bilateral contacts in CR. Orthopedic examination of the body posture was clinically carried out by an orthopedist who detected anomalies such as scoliosis, false scoliosis or paramorphism, kyph…

Treatment of Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) and Related Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a newly defined disorder of functional dizziness that in the International Classification of Diseases in its 11th revision (ICD-11) supersedes phobic postural vertigo and chronic subjective dizziness. Despite efforts to unify the diagnosis of functional (somatoform) dizziness, patients will present with a variety of triggers, perpetuating factors, and comorbidities, requiring individualized treatment. This article will review different treatment strategies for this common functional neurological disorder and provide practica

The effect of zolpidem on cognitive function and postural control at high altitude.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep is altered at high altitude leading many mountaineers to use hypnotics in order to improve sleep efficiency. While after a full night at altitude the short-acting hypnotic zolpidem does not appear to alter cognitive function, residual adverse effects should be considered following early waking-up as performed by mountaineers. We hypothesized that zolpidem intake at high altitude would alter cognitive function 4 hours after drug intake. METHODS: In a randomized double-blind controlled cross-over study, 22 participants were evaluated during two nights at sea level and tw

Postural time-to-contact as a precursor of visually induced motion sickness.

The postural instability theory of motion sickness predicts that subjective symptoms of motion sickness will be preceded by unstable control of posture. In previous studies, this prediction has been confirmed with measures of the spatial magnitude and the temporal dynamics of postural activity. In the present study, we examine whether precursors of visually induced motion sickness might exist in postural time-to-contact, a measure of postural activity that is related to the risk of falling. Standing participants were exposed to oscillating visual motion stimuli in a standard laboratory protoco…

Effects of unexpected visual motion on postural sway and motion sickness.

Motion sickness is thought to occur when the brain's assumptions about incoming sensory information do not match the actual signals received. These signals must involve the vestibular system for motion sickness to occur. In this paper, we describe an experiment in which subjects experienced unexpected visual motions, or perturbations, as they navigated a virtual environment (VE) while standing and wearing a head mounted display (HMD) or while viewing a monitor. We found that postural instability, as measured by a balance board, increased with time only when perturbations were present. HMD user

Postural Heart Rate Changes in Young Patients With Vasovagal Syncope.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recurrent postural vasovagal syncope (VVS) is caused by transient cerebral hypoperfusion from episodic hypotension and bradycardia; diagnosis is made by medical history. VVS contrasts with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), defined by chronic daily symptoms of orthostatic intolerance with excessive upright tachycardia without hypotension. POTS has recently been conflated with VVS when excessive tachycardia is succeeded by hypotension during tilt testing. We hypothesize that excessive tachycardia preceding hypotension and bradycardia is part of the vasovagal respon

Postural tachycardia in hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: A distinct subtype?

INTRODUCTION: It is not clear if patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) differ from patients with POTS due to other etiologies. We compared the results of autonomic testing and healthcare utilization in POTS patients with and without hEDS. METHODS: Patients with POTS+hEDS (n=20) and POTS controls without hypermobility (n=20) were included in the study. All patients underwent autonomic testing, and the electronic medical records were reviewed to determine the number and types of medications patients were taking, as well as the number of outpatient,

Can postural abnormality really respond to levodopa in Parkinson's disease?

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal postures affect motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD), potentially compromising the quality of life. The clinical efficacy of dopaminergic medications remains uncertain. Knowing what type of abnormal posture clearly responds to dopaminergic medication would facilitate the clinical management of PD. We investigated whether abnormal posture responded to dopamine challenge testing. METHODS: We studied 24 consecutive patients with PD who had anterior trunk flexion (ATF) (n=13), antecollis (n=4), or lateral trunk flexion (LTF) (n=7). Levodopa was infused intravenously over…
