Organization of escape movements from overhead threats in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).

Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were presented with overhead visual stimuli in different environmental situations. The organization of escape movements was investigated with video-based image analysis methods. In Experiment 1, gerbils in an open field established a home base and organized their escape trajectories with reference to both the home base and the location of the stimulus. In Experiment 2, gerbils were provided pairs of refuges. They used these refuges as home bases and organized their responses with reference to the home base. In Experiment 3, pairs of gerbils were tested

Emotional communication in close relationships.

Emotional communication patterns characterizing interactions between partners in close relationships were investigated by asking 29 couples who were married or living together to engage in a videotaped discussion of a problem they were having in their relationship. In a later experimental session, partners identified specific communications that they believed had an important influence on the discussion and then rated the communications in terms of the feelings the communicator intended to convey and the recipient's reactions. Partners attempted to reciprocate both the positive and negative fe

How one family perceives another: the relationship between social constructions and problem-solving competence.

This paper delineates a rarely studied but important family process: how a family perceives and understands the relationships in other families it knows. We hypothesize that these perceptions of other families are fundamental components of a family's shared construing of its social world. Families differ in how they perceive other families, specifically, and in their approach to construing or apprehending their social world, generally. We have hypothesized that these general differences also play a crucial role in shaping the style and competence of family problem-solving. A family's approach

Youth aggressive/disruptive behavior trajectories and subsequent gambling among urban male youth.

This study examines the association between aggressive/disruptive behavior development in two distinct developmental periods-childhood (i.e., Grades 1-3) and early adolescence (i.e., Grades 6-10)-and subsequent gambling behavior in late adolescence up to age 20. The sample consists of 310 urban males of predominately minority and low socioeconomic status followed from first grade to late adolescence. Separate general growth mixture models were estimated to explore the heterogeneity in aggressive/disruptive behavior development in the aforementioned two periods. Three distinct behavior trajecto

Effectiveness of behavioral parent therapy in preschool children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a behavioral parent therapy (BPT) program in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using multidimensional evaluations, the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Teacher Report Form (TRF). Between 2001 and 2005, the parents of 21 preschool children with ADHD were divided into six groups and participated in a series of 11 BPT sessions. Before and after BPT, the parents completed the CBCL, and the teachers completed the TRF. The behavioral and emotional problems of the children showed improvement after the BPT

Time Perspectives and Gambling in Adolescent Boys: Differential Effects of Present- and Future-Orientation.

Adolescent boys are characterised by increased risk-taking behavior, including a relatively high propensity to develop problem gambling habits. The association between gambling and sensitivity to immediately available rewards is well-established, suggesting that gamblers are less influenced by potential future consequences than non-gamblers. Nevertheless, existing studies have considered present- and future-orientation as two ends of the same continuum, and have not investigated the possibility that present and future perspectives might make independent contributions to gambling behavior. In t

School Discipline as a Consequence of Violent Victimization in Adolescence: Understanding the Mediating Roles of Head Injury and Behavior.

Pathways from violence to head injury and poor long-term outcomes have been found among numerous populations, however, have not yet been widely examined with youth exposed to violence. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are linked to a range of consequences salient to adolescent development and well-being, such as impulsivity, academic abilities, and emotional processing. This gap in research has led to a missed opportunity to understand the consequences of youth victimization, particularly within the academic setting. The current study examined whether head injury and problem behaviors mediate t…

Self-Regulation and Executive Functioning as Related to Survival in Motor Neuron Disease: Preliminary Findings.

OBJECTIVE: Disease progression varies widely among patients with motor neuron disease (MND). Patients with MND and coexisting dementia have shorter survival. However, implications of mild cognitive and behavioral difficulties are unclear. The present study examined the relative contribution of executive functioning and self-regulation difficulties on survival over a 6-year period among patients with MND, who scored largely within normal limits on cognitive and behavioral indices. METHODS: Patients with MND (N = 37, age = 59.97 ± 11.57, 46% female) completed the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task as

Youth Problem Drinking: The Role of Parental and Familial Relationships.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use continues to be an important global public health problem and adolescence seems to be a decisive period of time in the development of drinking patterns into adulthood. While most studies concentrate on frequency and amount of alcohol, fewer studies address "problem drinking." Gathering information on youth's alcohol-related behavioral consequences is especially important. OBJECTIVES: Current research focuses on gathering information on the background of problem drinking behavior with special attention to parental/familial relationships. METHODS: The survey was conduct

Leveraging Random Forests explainability for predictive modeling of children's conduct problems: insights from individual and family factors.

Conduct problems are among the most complex, impairing, and prevalent challenges affecting the mental health of children and adolescents. Due to their multifaceted nature, it is important to develop predictive models that capture the intricate interactions among contributing factors. This longitudinal study aims to: (1) evaluate the utility and effectiveness of Random Forest models for classifying children with varying levels of conduct problems, (2) analyze the interactions between individual and family variables in predicting high levels of conduct problems, and (3) determine the most releva

Editorial: Genetic Predisposition to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Increases the Risk of Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties.

Our understanding of the clinical impact and the long-term risks of having attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has improved recently, with large-scale epidemiological studies showing that individuals with ADHD are at increased risk of suicidal behavior, educational underachievement, substance misuse, and car accidents,1 as well as at increased risk of psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorder.2 It may be that having ADHD predisposes to educational underachievement and adversity later in life and thus predisposes to the development of other psy

Association between sleep disturbances and challenging behavior in children and adolescents with Angelman syndrome.

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with severe symptoms and associated comorbidities. It is caused by the inactivity or lack of the UBE3a gene. Symptoms of the syndrome include intellectual disability and developmental delay. The current study investigated sleep disturbances (SD) in children and adolescents with AS, associations between SD and possible predictors of SD. Variables examined included age, gender, newborn and infancy history, challenging behavior, type of therapy received, genetic type of AS, and seizures. The sample included data from 109 participants with a

Intelligence, motoric and psychological outcomes in children from different ART treatments: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Subtle abnormalities in children's intelligence, motor skills, and psychology from various assisted reproductive treatments (ARTs) might be underdiagnosed. Understanding the prognosis of intelligence, motor skills, and psychology in children from ART would provide parents with reasonable expectations and enable them to plan relevant support to achieve the optimum potential in ART children. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases until April 13, 2021, to identify relevant studies. Thirty-four studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Impacts of psychopathic traits dimensions on the development of indirect aggression from childhood to adolescence.

Children who show elevated levels of indirect aggression (IA) from childhood to adolescence are at increased risks of experiencing detrimental outcomes. Some studies suggest that psychopathic traits could act as a predisposing vulnerability in the development of IA, but the contributions of all three dimensions of psychopathic traits in explaining developmental trajectories of IA from childhood to adolescence remain unclear. This study aimed to determine if the three dimensions of psychopathic traits during childhood (i.e., callous-unemotional, narcissism-grandiosity, and impulsivity-irrespons

Do Children Think it is Important to Predict Learning and Behaviour Problems, and Do They Think Genetic Screening Has a Role to Play in This?

This study explores how capable young children are of thinking about a potential future that uses DNA screening to assess an individual's likelihood of experiencing learning or behaviour difficulties. Puppets and a scenario-based approach were used to ask children aged 4-10 (n = 165) whether they thought DNA screening might be helpful or harmful. A content analysis derived six categories: (1) 'Worried about being - and being seen as - different'; (2) 'Beliefs about the origins of learning and behaviour'; (3) 'Testing is harmful'; (4) 'Testing could help'; (5) 'How soon is too soon for testing?

Study Preregistration: Understanding the Etiology of Externalizing Problems in Young Children: The Roles of Callous-Unemotional Traits and Irritability.

Externalizing behavioral problems in young children are associated with later delinquency and crime,1 which can cause burdens at both personal and socialeconomic levels. The heterogeneity of externalizing problems emphasizes the importance of examining the etiological mechanisms that underlie externalizing problems and related behaviors. The present study focuses on 2 risk factors for externalizing behavioral problems in early childhood: callous-unemotional traits (CU), characterized as a lack of guilt and empathy,2 and irritability, a tendency to show anger and frustration.3 Behavioral geneti
