Encoder-free hexapod dead reckoning on sand using learned inertial correction.

For inexpensive legged robots traversing remote natural terrain, minimal-sensing localization strongly affects autonomous range and search efficiency. Although proprioceptive sensors such as inertial measurement units (IMU) are compact and widely used on robotic platforms, direct integration of noisy inertial measurements causes small sensor errors to propagate into large pose estimation errors, limiting their use as independent dead reckoning sensors. In this work, we address drift in encoder-free dead reckoning by combining body-frame acceleration profiles from a compact multi-IMU array with

Functional spatial organization of antennal hair plate sensilla and their development in crickets.

Antennae of insects are essential mechanosensory organs that facilitate active tactile exploration and spatial navigation. Hair plate sensilla at the base of the antenna flagellum provide proprioceptive inputs to detect the antennae's position. In hemimetabolous insects, such as crickets, the first instar immediately after hatching also possesses antennae; however, the developmental dynamics and spatial organization of antennal hair plates remain poorly understood. We present a comprehensive three-dimensional analysis of the antennal hair plates in crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) across develop

Investigation regarding the physiological effects of cobalt on physiological functions in Drosophila, crayfish, and crab: Behavioral, cardiac, neural, and synaptic properties.

Cobalt, a metallic element found naturally in the earth's crust, is essential to survival. It is the active center of cobalamins such as vitamin B12 and is also a micronutrient for bacteria, algae, and fungi. The effects of cobalt (II) chloride (CoCl2), the inorganic form of cobalt, are dependent on the dosage. High dosage or chronic exposure to CoCl2 can have negative effects, such as carcinogenic properties, intoxication, and "beer drinker's cardiomyopathy." This investigation was designed to test the effects of acute, high-concentration in cobalt exposure on physiological functions in Droso

Sublaminar stabilization (stapling) of the caudal cervical instability in Yorkshire terrier-A case report.

This case report describes the long-term outcome of surgical treatment of rare spinal instability in small-breed dogs. A 2-year and 7-month-old male Yorkshire terrier, weighing 1.5 kg, was presented with tetraparesis and proprioceptive deficits, neck pain, and intact deep pain sensation for a clinical examination. The conservative treatment had been unsuccessful for 20 months. A diagnosis of C6-C7 instability with a slight vertebral subluxation was made, which led to the decision about sublaminar stabilization. The Kirschner wire was placed on both sides of the spinous processes from C5 to T1

The tangled threads: Unveiling the interplay between the sense of body ownership and the sense of agency in impacting the bodily-self representation in eating disorders.

The feeling of owning a body (body ownership) and controlling its actions (sense of agency) contributes to the emergence of the bodily-self … ly-self representation when the RHI enlists hand movements, leading to a stronger visual-capture of proprioception. This study contributes to understanding the intricate link between body ownership and agency, shedding light on the role of voluntary actions in driving the sense of self in EDs.

Long-term effects of concussion on attention, sensory gating and motor learning.

The current work aimed to understand the behavioral manifestations that result from disruptions to the selective facilitation of task-relevant sensory information at early cortical processing stages in those with a history of concussion. A total of 40 participants were recruited to participate in this study, with 25 in the concussion history group (Hx) and 15 in the control group (No-Hx). Somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) were elicited via median nerve stimulation while subjects performed a task that manipulated their focus of attention toward or away from proprioceptive cues. Participant

fNIRS-Based Differences in Cortical Activation during Tool Use, Pantomimed Actions, and Meaningless Actions between Children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties with tool use and pantomime actions. The current study utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to examine the neural mechanisms underlying these gestural difficulties. Thirty-one children with and without ASD (age (mean ± SE) = 11.0 ± 0.6) completed a naturalistic peg-hammering task using an actual hammer (hammer condition), pantomiming hammering actions (pantomime condition), and performing meaningless actions with similar joint motions (meaningless condition). Children with ASD exhibited poor praxis performance (pr

A scoping review of the different types of exercise programs proposed for the improvement of postural balance in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), which is the most common type of scoliosis, is a progressive disease that occurs in children aged 10-16 years. Abnormal curvature in AIS provokes spinal asymmetry of the upper body alignment and might deteriorate postural balancing and control ability. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of exercise interventions on balance and postural stability in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: Embase, Scopus, Pubmed (Medline) and Web of Science databases were searched using the terms idiopathic scoliosis, physiotherapy, and balance.

Is the Integration Problem in the Sensoriomotor System the Cause of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis?

PURPOSE: The reason behind the balance control disorder seen in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has been suggested as a central nervous system dysfunction, yet it has not been investigated in detail whether this problem originates from sensory, motor, or from both systems. This study aimed to reveal the differences in the pathways that provide proprioceptive sense, motor control, and coordination between these 2 systems in female individuals with AIS. METHODS: Brain Diffusion Tensor Imaging was applied to 30 healthy individuals and 30 Lenke type 1 AIS patients. All of the individuals in

Muscle spindles of the multifidus muscle undergo structural change after intervertebral disc degeneration.

PURPOSE: Proprioceptive deficits are common in low back pain. The multifidus muscle undergoes substantial structural change after back injury, but whether muscle spindles are affected is unclear. This study investigated whether muscle spindles of the multifidus muscle are changed by intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration in a large animal model. METHODS: IVD degeneration was induced by partial thickness annulus fibrosus lesion to the L3-4 IVD in nine sheep. Multifidus muscle tissue at L4 was harvested at six months after lesion, and from six age-/sex-matched naïve control animals. Muscle spin

Effect of sensory-motor latencies and active muscular stiffness on stability for an ankle-hip model of balance on a balance board.

To achieve human upright posture (UP) and avoid falls, the central nervous system processes visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive information to activate the appropriate muscles to accelerate or decelerate the body's center of mass. In this process, sensory-motor (SM) latencies and muscular deficits, even in healthy older adults, may cause falls. This condition is worse for people with chronic neuromuscular deficits (stroke survivors, patients with multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease). One therapeutic approach is to recover or improve quiet UP by utilizing a balance board (BB) (a rotati

Causal Dynamics of Scalp Electroencephalography Oscillation During the Rubber Hand Illusion.

Rubber hand illusion (RHI) is an important phenomenon for the investigation of body ownership and self/other distinction. The illusion is promoted by the spatial and temporal contingencies of visual inputs near a fake hand and physical touches to the real hand. The neural basis of this phenomenon is not fully understood. We hypothesized that the RHI is associated with a fronto-parietal circuit, and the goal of this study was to determine the dynamics of neural oscillation associated with this phenomenon. We measured electroencephalography while delivering spatially congruent/incongruent visuo-
