OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety of intravenous cyclophosphamide (CYP) used in severe and refractory juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM).

A study was conducted by house-to-house visit during 2nd and 3rd round of IPPI in Nov and Dec 2000 in two slums adjacent to Medical College Kolkata. Total houses visited in these two rounds were 2836 and 611 children were immunised at home. Mothers of 503 children (who did not receive IPPI dose at booth on NIDs) were interviewed. To evaluate the application of Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) pulse sequence to increase the sensitivity of detecting tubers in tuberous sclerosis patients compared with fast spin-echo T2-weighted (FSET2W) image, we obtained 12 magnetic resonance (MR) images in 10 patients (mean age = 57.7 months old). We report the brain magnetic resonance imaging findings in the case of a 5-year-old boy with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). Fluid-attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging revealed multifocal abnormal cortical signals which were difficult to see on conventional T1- and T2-weighted images. Although the patient was in an advanced clinical stage of disease and had severe cortical atrophy, FLAIR imaging demonstrated characteristic findings of MELAS.

By means of reflexion pulse oximetry the arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) of 100 fetuses intrapartum was measured in a high-risk group and compared with clinical parameters.
