PURPOSE: To assess radiation therapy and chemotherapy in the treatment of invasive thymoma and thymic carcinoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 1981-1995, 43 patients received irradiation after total (n = 23) or subtotal (n = 20) resection. Tumors were thymic carcinoma (n = 10) or invasive thymoma (n = 33). Masaoka stage was II in 10 patients, III in 14, and IV in 19. Median total dose applied was 50 Gy (range, 10-72 Gy). Seventeen patients (five with stage III and 12 with stage IV) also received chemotherapy.

The authors report a case of mitro-aortic valvulopathy associated with single-vessel coronary disease, both probably caused by thoracic irradiation, initially for Hodgkin's lymphoma, and later for carcinoma of the breast. The patient was subjected to aortic valve replacement with a mechanical prosthesis, partial mitral annuloplasty and myocardial revascularization. This report underscores the importance of long-term follow up of patients subjected to mediastinal radiotherapy, because of the significant cardiac morbidity caused by this type of treatment.

Chronic proctitis is a well-known complication of therapeutic irradiation. The results of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) used in the treatment of chronic radiation proctitis are reported. From 1992 to 1995, 14 patients with chronic radiation-induced proctitis were treated with HBO2. Nine patients were treated in a monoplace chamber at 2.0 atm abs (203 kPa O2), and five patients were treated at 2.36 atm abs (239 kPa O2). Thymic lymphomas develop in C57BL/Ka mice within 36 weeks after split-dose X-irradiation. The aim of the primary treatment of chronic radiation enteritis is to control active intestinal damage. Total parenteral nutrition and systemic glucocorticoid should be used when radiotherapy has been performed within the preceding year, in the case of extensive and severe intestinal damage, without fistula or bleeding. Symptomatic treatment depends on the pathophysiological analysis of diarrhea and compensation of malabsorption.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiometers and polysulphone film badges were used to study scattered UV radiation from sunlight underneath a shade-cloth of a size about 70 x 100 cm2. The transmittance of erythemal UV radiation through the shade-cloth was found to be 0.14 +/- 0.03. Skin reactions associated with radiation therapy require frequent nursing assessment and intervention. Preventive interventions and early management can minimize the severity of the skin reaction. It consists of 900 patients who were repeatedly injected intravenously with known dosages (microCi/kg) of the alpha-particle emitter Ra-224 for the intended treatment of tuberculosis and ankylosing spondylitis between 1943 and 1952/1965. 682 patients had been treated as adults after the age of 20 years, and 218 hat been injected as "juveniles" aged 20 years or younger. The 20 year experience with diagnosis and management of radiation colitis at the Gastroenterology Department of the Hospital Oncológico "Padre Machado" is presented. Of 404 cases, 98% were treated for carcinoma of the cervix. The most frequent symptoms were rectal bleeding (71%) and changes in the intestinal habitus (27.2%). Symptoms were present from one month to one year prior to radiation. Flexible sigmoidoscopy in 77.5% of patients showed Grade I and II actinic disease, and X Ray studies sowed Grade II and III in 80%. Thirty eight patients required surgical treatment.
