Accounting for shared and unshared dosimetric uncertainties in the dose response for ultrasound-detected thyroid nodules after exposure to radioactive fallout.

Dosimetic uncertainties, particularly those that are shared among subgroups of a study population, can bias, distort or reduce the slope or significance of a dose response. Exposure estimates in studies of health risks from environmental radiation exposures are generally highly uncertain and thus, susceptible to these methodological limitations. An analysis was published in 2008 concerning radiation-related thyroid nodule prevalence in a study population of 2,994 villagers under the age of 21 years old between August 1949 and September 1962 and who lived downwind from the Semipalatinsk Nuclear

Oleanolic acid combined with olaparib enhances radiosensitization in triple negative breast cancer and hypoxia imaging with 18F-FETNIM micro PET/CT.

The heterogeneity of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) results in the worst prognosis among breast cancer types, making its treatment strategy very challenging. A recent study showed that oleanolic acid (OA) has a radiosensitizing effect on tumor cells, but it does not show a good clinical effect when used alone in radiotherapy. The cytotoxicity of radiotherapy can be enhanced by modulating DNA repair, so new treatment options are being investigated to inhibit DNA repair pathways and sensitize tumors to radiation. Radiation induces DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), and inhibition of Poly (AD

Periacetabular osteotomy: validation of intraoperative fluoroscopic monitoring of acetabular orientation.

During periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) the acetabulum is reorientated and the correction monitored by one or more anteroposterior pelvic radiographs. Obtaining these images is time consuming and requires additional technical and personal resources. Such disadvantages could be overcome with the use of fluoroscopy. However, information obtained from fluoroscopy should have the same quality when compared to standard pelvic radiography. Our purpose was to define a suitable fluoroscopy setup and compare the information obtained from the fluoroscopic images to that obtained from a traditional anterop

Relationship between dose in vivo of ethylene oxide and exposure to ethene studied in exposed workers.

1. In vivo doses of ethylene oxide, arising from ethene exposure, in plastic industry workers were estimated through hemoglobin adducts. The ethene exposure was assessed through person-worn monitors. The metabolic conversion of ethene to ethylene oxide was estimated from the exposure dose/in vivo dose ratio. 2. Two studies were done: In the first study hemoglobin adducts were determined in samples collected on one occasion in exposed groups and exposure doses were estimated by using exposure data from the hygienic surveillance program. The second study applies a newly developed study design wi

Breath-holding treatments in tomotherapy with active breathing coordinator: A first case report.

PURPOSE: Respiratory motion poses a significant challenge in radiation therapy for thoracic and abdominal malignancies. For tomotherapy machines, it is even more challenging due to the 10-s warm-up time before initiating the treatment beams. A recent tomotherapy system upgrade has reduced this warm-up time to 0.5 s for the TomoDirect delivery mode, enabling the feasibility of performing breath-holding treatments. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of performing breath-holding treatments on a tomotherapy machine with spirometry technique. METHODS: A patient with gastric mucosa-assi

Monitoring of Lung Involvement in Rheumatologic Disease.

The monitoring of lung involvement in patients with connective tissue diseases is central to optimal long-term management and is directed towards: (a) the detection of supervening lung involvement not present at presentation and (b) the identification of disease progression in established lung disease. For both goals, accurate surveillance requires multi-disciplinary evaluation with the integration of symptomatic change, serial pulmonary function trends and imaging data. Evaluated in isolation, each of these monitoring domains has significant limitations. Symptomatic change may be confounded b

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Postoperative Fracture Healing Process without Metal Artifact: A Preliminary Report of a Novel Animal Model.

Background. Early radiological diagnosis and continual monitoring are of ultimate importance for timely treatment of delayed union, nonunion, and infection after bone fracture surgery. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could provide superior detailed images compared with X-ray and computed tomography (CT) without ionizing radiation, metal implants used for fracture fixation lead to abundant artifacts on MRI and thus prohibit accurate interpretation. The authors develop a novel intramedullary fixation model of rat femoral fracture using polyetheretherketone (PEEK) threaded rods and inve

Cumulative radiation dose from medical imaging procedures in patients undergoing resection for lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Radiation dose from diagnostic imaging procedures is not monitored in patients undergoing surgery for lung cancer. Evidence suggests an increased lifetime risk of malignancy of 1.0% per 100 millisieverts (mSv). As such, recommendations are to restrict healthcare and radiation workers to a maximum dose of 50 mSv per year or to 100 mSv over a three-year period. The purpose of this study was to estimate cumulative effective doses of radiation in patients undergoing lung cancer resection and to determine predictors of increased exposure. METHODS: We identified 94 consecutive patients

Effects of low doses and low dose rates of external ionizing radiation: cancer mortality among nuclear industry workers in three countries.

Studies of the mortality among nuclear industry workforces have been carried out, and nationally combined analyses performed, in the U.S., the UK and Canada. This paper presents the results of internationally combined analyses of mortality data on 95,673 workers (85.4% men) monitored for external exposure to ionizing radiation and employed for 6 months or longer in the nuclear industry of one of the three countries. These analyses were undertaken to obtain a more precise direct assessment of the carcinogenic effects of protracted low-level exposure to external, predominantly gamma, radiation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of low-dose irradiated autologous peripheral blood reinfusion (LDIAPBR) on a rat model of radiation-induced leukopenia. METHODS: The rats were randomly divided into four groups. In the LDIAPBR group, LDIAPBR was performed 1 day before modeling (10% of the total circulating blood volume was withdrawn, irradiated with 100 mGy ex vivo, and completely reinfused). Meanwhile, the normal group and model group only underwent blood withdrawal and reinfusion of the same proportion without blood irradiation. Except for the normal group, all groups were subjected to

Trichostatin A mitigates acute and late effects of radiation in intestine by regulation of DNA damage repair and Wnt/TGFβ/Smad signaling.

PURPOSE: Radiation accidents and misuse of nuclear weapons elevate the risk of development of acute life-threatening injuries as well as their late effects are noted in survivors. Currently, no countermeasure agents are available for the management of radiation-induced GI injury (RIGI) in humans. In the present study, the radiomitigative potential of Trichostatin A (TSA) was evaluated against acute and late RIGI. METHODS: 15 Gy gamma radiation was delivered to the whole abdomen of C57BL/6 mice, followed by intravenous TSA (150 ng/kg) administration after 1 h and 24 h. Acute changes were check

Non-invasive stereotactic body radiation therapy for refractory ventricular arrhythmias: an institutional experience.

BACKGROUND: Initial studies have reported excellent safety and efficacy for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in patients with refractory ventricular tachycardia (VT). METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective analysis of eight consecutive patients who underwent SBRT for refractory, scar-related VT. The anatomic target for radioablation was defined based on surface 12-lead ECG VT morphology, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and electroanatomic mapping data when available. The target volume treated and the prescribed radiation dose (15-25 Gy) was based on the combined clinical

Post-Irradiation Treatment with a Superoxide Dismutase Mimic, MnTnHex-2-PyP5+, Mitigates Radiation Injury in the Lungs of Non-Human Primates after Whole-Thorax Exposure to Ionizing Radiation.

Radiation injury to the lung is the result of acute and chronic free radical formation, and there are currently few effective means of mitigating such injury. Studies in rodents indicate that superoxide dismutase mimetics may be effective in this regard; however, studies in humans or large animals are lacking. We hypothesized that post-exposure treatment with the lipophilic mitochondrial superoxide dismutase mimetic, MnTnHex-2-PyP5+ (hexyl), would reduce radiation-induced pneumonitis and fibrosis in the lungs of nonhuman primates. Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) received 10 Gy whole thorax irr

[Impact of the women's press on the attitudes of readers toward ultraviolet radiation--a survey of law and psychology students].

UNLABELLED: Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) leads to negative consequences including sunburn, carcinogenesis and photoaging. Therefore, educational campaigns promoting safe tanning and sunscreens are necessary. Helpful with this regard might be mass media including women's magazines, which for young people are important source of information on health, beauty and lifestyle. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of women's press in the attitude of non-medical students toward ultraviolet radiation (UV) as well as to analyse articles about tanning and skin pr

Hounsfield units variations: impact on CT-density based conversion tables and their effects on dose distribution.

PURPOSE: Determination of dose error margins in radiation therapy planning due to variations in Hounsfield Units (HU) values dependent on the use of different CT scanning protocols. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Based on a series of different CT scanning protocols used in clinical practice, conversion tables for radiation dose calculations were generated and subsequently tested on a phantom. These tables were then used to recalculate the radiation therapy plans of 28 real patients after an incorrect scanning protocol had inadvertently been used for these patients. RESULTS: Different CT parameter set

Vitamin D protects keratinocytes from deleterious effects of ionizing radiation.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy can induce severe skin responses that may limit the clinically acceptable radiation dose. The responses include erythema, dry and moist desquamation, erosions and dermal-epidermal blister formation. These effects reflect injury to, and reproductive failure of, epidermal cells and may also be due to dysregulation of the tissue remodelling process caused by excessive proteolytic activity. Calcitriol, the hormonally active vitamin D metabolite, protects keratinocytes from programmed cell death induced by various noxious stimuli. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether calcitriol p

Experience with dose escalation using CHARTWEL (continuous hyperfractionated accelerated radiotherapy weekend less) in non-small-cell lung cancer.

Results from the multicentre randomized trial of CHART (continuous, hyperfractionated, accelerated radiotherapy) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) showed a significant increase in survival (P=0.004) compared with conventional radiotherapy and a therapeutic benefit relative to late radiation-induced morbidity. However, 60% of patients died because of failure to control locoregional disease. These findings have stimulated interest in assessing the feasibility of dose escalation using a modified CHART schedule. Acute and late morbidity with a CHARTWEL (CHART WeekEnd Less) schedule of 54 Gy in

PET-guided therapy: synergies, strategies, and future directions in external beam radiation therapy and radiopharmaceutical therapy.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) has evolved from a purely diagnostic modality into a cornerstone of precision radiation oncology. PET now informs patient selection, target delineation, treatment personalization, and post-therapy evaluation across External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) and Radiopharmaceutical Therapy (RPT). Radiotracers provide quantitative data on tumor biology, heterogeneity, receptor expression, and therapeutic response, enabling a shift from morphology-based to biology-driven oncology. PET-guided therapy is increasingly used to select patients for molecular radiotherapy,
