Systemic factors contributory to retinal vein occlusion.

This study was undertaken in 79 patients with retinal vein occlusion to assess the different systemic mechanisms contributing to the occlusion, namely, intrinsic vessel disease and abnormalities of the blood constituents and blood viscosity. In 55 patients older than 50 years of age, important associations were hypertension, abnormal results on glucose tolerance test, hyperlipidemia, chronic lung disease, and elevated serum IgA levels. In the 24 patients younger than 50 years of age, male incidence was high and important associations were head injuries, hyperlipidemia, and the use of estrogen-

Tortuosity of arterioles and venules in quantifying plus disease.

BACKGROUND: Plus disease is the major criterion for laser treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. ROPtool is a computer program that traces retinal blood vessels and measures their tortuosity. Our objectives were to determine (1) whether examiners could accurately discriminate between arterioles and venules and (2) whether tortuosity sufficient for plus disease and pre-plus disease was assessed most accurately by considering arterioles, venules, or both. METHODS: One hundred retinal vessels were identified in 25 images randomly selected from 184 total images. Three pediatric ophthalmologists…

Acute effects of daily red wine consumption on retinal and cerebral blood flow in healthy young adults and an animal model.

Acute effects of a daily dose of red wine may cause deterioration of visual function; however, there is limited information on healthy individuals. This study aims to investigate acute effects of daily red wine consumption on visual function and retinal microvasculature in healthy young adults through a randomised self-controlled design and to explore the molecular mechanisms using an animal model. In healthy young adults' study, twenty-seven adults with follow-up at baseline, 0·5 h and 2 h after consuming 300 ml of either red wine or water underwent blood biochemistry, visual function, morpho

Nighttime Systolic Blood Pressure a Major Factor of Retinal Vascular Caliber Changes in Patients With Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Changes in retinal vessel caliber are crucial for detecting early retinopathy, a significant cause of blindness in individuals with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (T2DM). This study aims to evaluate the changes in retinal vessel caliber and identify factors associated with these changes in recently diagnosed T2DM patients. METHODS: The study included newly diagnosed T2DM patients (within 6 months of diagnosis) who were free of antidiabetic treatment (except metformin) and matched individuals based on age and blood pressure (BP). Data collected included somatometric measurements, BP (off

Adaptive optics imaging of the retinal microvasculature.

The eye has long been recognised as the window to pathological processes occurring in the brain and other organs. By imaging the vasculature of the retina we have improved the scientific understanding and clinical best practice for a diverse range of conditions, ranging from diabetes, to stroke, to dementia. Mounting evidence suggests that damage to the smallest and most delicate vessels in the body, the capillaries, is the first sign in many vasculopathies. These are the most critical vessels involved in the exchange of metabolites with tissue. Accurate assessment of retinal capillary structu
