Borrelia valaisiana - a candidate human pathogen? Insights from the tick-borne diseases STING study.

BACKGROUND: Borrelia (B.) valaisiana is a tick-borne spirochete within the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. In Sweden, it occurs in Ixodes ricinus ticks, but its role as a human pathogen remains uncertain. In the Tick-Borne Diseases STING study conducted during 2007-2015, adult participants from Sweden and the Åland Islands, Finland, provided ticks, blood samples for serological analyses, and questionnaires at inclusion and at a 3-month follow-up. Medical records were reviewed for those seeking care. Ticks were characterised, feeding duration assessed, and pathogens detected by real-ti…

Clinical canine Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) infections are associated with highly elevated total IgG ELISA titers and convalescent Th2 immune responses.

Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), which is transmitted through species belonging to the Ixodes ricinus complex. Canine Lyme Disease (CLD) is an established clinical entity in the USA. In Europe, an unambiguous diagnosis is rarely made, although it has been shown that dogs can be naturally infected and develop antibodies against B. burgdorferi (s.l.). The relation of Borrelia total IgG, IgG2, and IgG1 specific antibodies and the incidence of symptoms was studied in a prospective cohort study. In a tick-dense area in the Netherlands, 84 dogs in 4 age cohorts were follo…

Mixed-sex clusters on grass blades: breeding strategy of the ornate dog tick, Dermacentor reticulatus.

BACKGROUND: The ornate dog tick Dermacentor reticulatus is second only to the hard tick Ixodes ricinus in terms of importance as a vector of infectious organisms, especially of Babesia canis, the agent of canine babesiosis. Both the geographical range and local densities of D. reticulatus are steadily increasing in many regions of Europe. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that D. reticulatus possesses an efficient breeding strategy that allows for a rapid increase in tick numbers and densities through the formation of mixed-sex clusters/aggregations while questing in the environme…

Spotted fever group rickettsiae and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato seropositive individuals with or without Lyme disease: A retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Ixodes ricinus tick is the main vector of Borrelia burgdorferi and tick-borne encephalitis virus in Switzerland. Spotted fever group Rickettsiae (SFG) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum have been detected in Swiss ticks, however, information about the extent and clinical presentation of these infections in humans is scant. METHODS: Indirect fluorescent antibody tests for SFG rickettsiae and Anaplasma phagocytophilum were performed on serum samples of 121 Borrelia burgdorferi seropositive patients with and without Lyme disease and 43 negative controls. RESULTS: Out of 121 Borrelia …

The absence of the drhm gene is not a marker for human-pathogenicity in European Anaplasma phagocytophilum strains.

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium that replicates in neutrophil granulocytes. It is transmitted by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex and causes febrile illness in humans and animals. The geographical distribution of A. phagocytophilum spans the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. However, human disease predominantly occurs in North America but is infrequently reported from Europe and Asia. In North American strains, the absence of the drhm gene has been proposed as marker for pathogenicity in humans whereas no information on the presence…

A preliminary molecular survey of Babesia divergens and first evidence of Theileria annulata in cattle from Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Babesia divergens causes human babesiosis in Europe where the parasite utilizes cattle as animal reservoir and Ixodes ricinus as tick vector. Importation of infected animals and passive carriage of infected ticks through migratory birds can lead to tick/pathogen geographic expansion and emergence of diseases in naïve land. Given the information that Saudi Arabia imports cattle from the European countries and that two global bird flyways pass through the country geographic coordinates, we speculate that B. divergens might be introduced into the Kingdom. Therefore, the aim of…
