Mindfulness, rumination and post-traumatic growth in a Chinese cancer sample.

A multiple mediation structural equation model was used to test the relationship between mindfulness, deliberate rumination, intrusive rumination and post-traumatic growth (PTG) among Chinese cancer patients. Data were collected from 309 cancer patients in China (61.2% male, 38.8% female), who completed questionnaires comprising the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, the Event Related Rumination Inventory and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory. The multiple mediation structural equation model showed that deliberate rumination partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and PTG. Ho

Night-time rumination in PTSD: development and validation of a brief measure.

Background: Pre-sleep cognitive activity and arousal have long been implicated in the maintenance of insomnia. However, despite high comorbidity between insomnia and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pre-sleep thoughts in PTSD and their associations with disturbed sleep, have not yet been investigated. Objective: This study presents the development and preliminary validation of a brief self-report measure of the content of trauma-related pre-sleep thoughts: the Trauma Thoughts before Sleep Inventory (TTSI). Methods: Participants (N = 285) were recruited online into five groups: three group

The Complex Interplay Between Emotion Regulation and Work Rumination on Exhaustion.

This study examined the interplay between emotion regulation strategies (reappraisal and suppression) and work-related rumination (affective work rumination and detachment from work) on exhaustion. In all, 1985 participants from three human service occupations (psychologists, teachers, and ministers) completed the web-based survey. The results showed that reappraisal and detachment from work had a negative relation to exhaustion, whereas the relation between suppression and affective work rumination to exhaustion were positively directed. Moreover, results of mediation analyses showed that the

Rumination network dysfunction in major depression: A brain connectome study.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a central feature of major depressive disorder (MDD). Knowledge of the neural structures that underpin rumination offers significant insight into depressive pathophysiology and may help to develop potential intervention strategies for MDD, a mental illness that has become the leading cause of disability worldwide. METHODS: Using resting-state fMRI and graph theory, this study adopted a connectome approach to examine the functional topological organization of the neural network associated with rumination in MDD. Data from 96 participants were analyzed, including 51 pa

Executive functioning and rumination as they relate to stress-induced cortisol curves.

Better executive functioning may be associated with more adaptive stress responses than worse executive functioning, potentially due to less propensity for rumination. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that better executive functioning would be associated with decreased total cortisol output (AUCg) and cortisol sensitivity with respect to increase/decrease (AUCi) in response to a stressor, and that this association is mediated by stress task rumination. Participants completed measures of inhibition, updating/monitoring, and cognitive flexibility, a social-evaluative stressor, and a self-

Awareness and rumination moderate the affective pathway to paranoia in daily life.

Numerous cross-sectional studies found psychosis to be associated with less awareness of emotions, a decreased use of adaptive (e.g. reappraisal) and an increased use of maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) strategies (e.g. suppression). In this study, we tested whether state levels of emotion awareness and momentary use of specific ER strategies moderate the link between negative affect at one timepoint (t-1) and paranoia at the next timepoint (t) in a six-day experience sampling study. Individuals with psychotic disorders (n = 71) reported on the presence of paranoia, negative affect, emotion

How Does Rumination Impact Cognition? A First Mechanistic Model.

Rumination is a process of uncontrolled, narrowly focused negative thinking that is often self-referential, and that is a hallmark of depression. Despite its importance, little is known about its cognitive mechanisms. Rumination can be thought of as a specific, constrained form of mind-wandering. Here, we introduce a cognitive model of rumination that we developed on the basis of our existing model of mind-wandering. The rumination model implements the hypothesis that rumination is caused by maladaptive habits of thought. These habits of thought are modeled by adjusting the number of memory ch

Functional connectivity of reflective and brooding rumination in depressed and healthy women.

Ruminative thinking is related to an increased risk for major depressive disorder (MDD) and perpetuates negative mood states. Rumination, uncontrollable negative thoughts about the self, may comprise both reflective and brooding components. However, only brooding rumination is consistently associated with increased negativity bias and negative coping styles, while reflective rumination has a less clear relationship with negative outcomes in healthy and depressed participants. The current study examined seed-to-voxel (S2.V) resting-state functional connectivity (FC) in a sample of healthy (HC)

A longitudinal view of rumination, poor sleep and psychological distress in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence and negative impact of psychological problems during adolescence, examining transdiagnostic factors that may have scope to positively influence a variety of psychological problems is imperative. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal relationship between rumination and psychological distress and whether sleep mediated this relationship over a 2 year period. METHODS: Participants were 1620 high school students in the 7th and 8th grade at baseline from 17 public schools in three middle Sweden communities. Students completed quest

Attention Bias in Rumination and Depression: Cognitive Mechanisms and Brain Networks.

Depressed individuals exhibit biased attention to negative emotional information. However, much remains unknown about (1) the neurocognitive mechanisms of attention bias (e.g., qualities of negative information that evoke attention bias, or functional brain network dynamics that may reflect a propensity for biased attention) and (2) distinctions in the types of attention bias related to different dimensions of depression (e.g., ruminative depression). Here, in 50 women, clinical depression was associated with facilitated processing of negative information only when such information was self-de

Decline of maternal antibodies to small ruminant lentivirus in goat kids.

We carried out this study to determine for how long small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV)-specific antibodies can be detected by three commercial ELISA kits in goat kids after suckling infected does in field conditions. Forty-one kids born to SRLV-seropositive asymptomatic does were blood sampled prior to colostrum consumption, and then weekly for 6 months in total. The sera were screened with three commercial ELISA kits: whole-virus ELISA (wELISA), recombinant transmembrane and capsid antigen ELISA (TM/CA-ELISA), and surface antigen ELISA (SU-ELISA). All but one kid were seronegative in all three

Group Rumination: Social Interactions Around Music in People with Depression.

One of the most important roles that music serves in human society is the promotion of social relationships and group cohesion. In general, emotional experiences tend to be amplified in group settings through processes of social feedback. However, previous research has established that listening to sad music can intensify negative emotions in people with tendencies to rumination and depression. This study therefore investigated the phenomenon of ruminating with music, and the question of whether listening to sad music in group settings provides social benefits for emotionally vulnerable listen

[Rumination syndrome: Diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties of a not so uncommon disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Rumination syndrome is an uncommon gastrointestinal functional disorder that may be difficult to diagnose, as not many physicians are aware of this condition. In many cases, patients undergo numerous tests and are prescribed several treatments based on erroneous diagnoses. When the correct diagnosis is eventually made, therapy for the syndrome can be difficult and complex because of its multifactorial nature. The aim of this study was to present our experience with this condition, by presenting an analysis of the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic data of our patients. PATIEN

Linking attentional control and PTSD symptom severity: the role of rumination.

Although deficits in attentional control have been linked to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the mechanism that may account for this association has not been fully elucidated. The present study examined rumination as a mediator of the relationship between attentional control and PTSD symptoms. Veterans with PTSD and trauma-exposed veterans without PTSD completed measures of attentional control, rumination, and PTSD symptom severity. As predicted, the findings showed that veterans with PTSD reported significantly lower levels of attentional control than veterans without PTSD. Veterans wit

Children's Rumination to Sadness and Anger: Implications for the Development of Depression and Aggression.

The current study examined the transdiagnostic nature of rumination in the development of childhood depression and aggression by examining the relation between two forms of rumination, sadness and anger, in a single study and assessing their unique and shared behavioral correlates. A community sample of 254 children (ages 7-14, 50.4% female, 66.5% Caucasian) completed self-report measures of rumination and depressive symptoms, and peer nominations of aggressive behaviors. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to assess unique and shared behavioral correlates. Anger rumination uniquel

The interaction between 5-HTTLPR genotype and ruminative thinking on BMI.

Negative affect or stress is often found to increase energy intake for high palatable energy-rich foods and hence weight gain. Reduced brain serotonin (5-HT) function is known to increase stress vulnerability and the risk for eating-related disturbances. A short (S) allele polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) is associated with a less efficient functioning brain serotonin system and therefore higher stress vulnerability. It has been suggested that this genotype may be directly linked to an increased risk for weight gain and/or obesity. However, a high amount of variability

Rumination time and monitoring of health disorders during early lactation.

The objective was to evaluate the association between changes in daily rumination time (dRT) and early stages of disease during early lactation and to assess the performance of two proposed disease detection indices. This cohort study included 210 multiparous Holstein cows at the University of Florida Dairy Unit. Cows were affixed with a neck collar containing rumination loggers providing rumination time. The occurrence of health disorders (mastitis, metritis, clinical hypocalcemia, depression/dehydration/fever (DDF), digestive conditions, lameness and clinical ketosis) was assessed until 60 d

Molecular characteristics and prevalence of small ruminant lentiviruses in goats in Japan.

Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs), which comprise caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) and maedi-visna virus (MVV), are prevalent in goats and sheep worldwide, including in Japan. However, little is known about the molecular characteristics of goat lentiviruses in Japan. In this study, a molecular and phylogenetic analysis of the long gag region was performed. The phylogenic tree demonstrated that all samples belonged to SRLV subtype B1. Two clusters were identified, with one cluster distinct from previously reported strains of subtype B1. In addition, several alterations in the amino
