An assay device for the rapid detection of Leptospira-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies in human sera is presented. The sensitivity (85.8%) and specificity (93.6%) of the assay compared well (91.9% agreement) with those of an IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay routinely used in the serodiagnosis of leptospirosis. The sensitivity of the assay varied with the stage of the disease. The assay uses stabilized components and is simply performed by the addition of serum and sample fluid to the sample well of the assay device. The assay is read after 10 min, and a positive result is obtain

Paragonimiasis in endemic areas can be diagnosed by clinical symptoms. However, the diagnosis should always be confirmed by microscopic examination of the sputum or stool in order to find Paragonimus eggs. Within recent years marked advances in diagnosis of paragonimiasis have been made. Two new approaches comprising a genetic probe and immunological tests have been developed with claims to be as good or better than microscopic examinations. This report reviews these two areas, especially in paragonimiasis caused by Paragonimus heterotremus and P. westermani. In addition, problem areas in assa

A serological and bacteriological study was performed with sera taken from 2,228 swine from six states in Venezuela. None of the animals were vaccinated against brucellosis, and the prevalence of the disease varied from 5 to 89% on farms located in these states. Our studies indicated that the animals could be categorized into four groups depending on the degree of reactivity in serological tests. Brucella suis biovar 1 was isolated from the lymph nodes, spleens, and semen samples of seropositive animals and identified by oxidative metabolic techniques. B. suis could not be isolated from tissue
