Sheep milk-borne epidemic of tick-borne encephalitis in Slovakia.

A study of an outbreak of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in a natural focus of this infection at ZAvada village (Slovakia) led to the conclusion that apparently the epidemic was caused by consumption of fresh sheep cheese and infection of persons occurred by the alimentary route. To our knowledge, this is the first record of this source of infection in man.

Erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and glutathione deficiency in sheep.

Erythrocytes of 145 sheep representing six breeds were assayed for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. All sheep had erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase values similar to glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficient erythrocytes of man. Mean erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase levels ranged from 0.65 to 1.54 micromoles of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate per gram of hemoglobin per minute. Many of these sheep also had low levels and/or unstable reduced glutathione. Sheep with low levels of erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and reduced glutathione…

Listeriosis in sheep. Listeria monocytogeńes in sheep fed hay or grass silage during pregnancy. Immunological state, white blood cells, total serum protein and serum iron.

A comparison was made between a hay fed group, consisting of 23 ewes, and a grass silage fed group of 22 ewes, all pregnant. Excretion of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) in the faeces and milk, antibody titres in sera and whey and delayed hypersensitivity against Lm, and several blood components were determined. The animals had previously been exposed to Lm, and Lm was isolated from the faeces from several animals when the experiment started. No significant difference in number of excretors between the 2 groups was found during the experimental period. The haemagglutination titres in both sera and

Production and characterisation of monoclonal antibodies to Brucella melitensis cytosoluble proteins that are able to differentiate antibody responses of infected sheep from Rev. 1 vaccinated sheep.

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were produced to Brucella melitensis cytosoluble proteins (CP) with apparent molecular masses of 12, 24 and 28 kDa (CP12, CP24 and CP28) which were previously shown by immunoblotting to differentiate antibody responses of infected sheep from those of B. melitensis strain Rev. 1 vaccinated sheep. These MAbs were derived from mice infected with virulent smooth (S) B. melitensis strain H38. Most MAbs obtained were directed to CP28, which indicated (as was shown in infected sheep) that this protein was also highly immunogenic in mice. A large number of MAbs that showed…

Domestic sheep show average Coxiella burnetii seropositivity generations after a sheep-associated human Q fever outbreak and lack detectable shedding by placental, vaginal, and fecal routes.

Coxiella burnetii is a globally distributed zoonotic bacterial pathogen that causes abortions in ruminant livestock. In humans, an influenza … e risk of future outbreaks. In this study, we assessed bacterial shedding and seroprevalence in 100 sheep from an Idaho location associated with a 1984 human Q fever outbreak. We observed 5% seropositivity, which was not significantly different from the national average of 2.7% for the U.S. (P>0.05). Furthermore, C. burnetii was not detected by quantita …

Pharmacokinetics of Flunixin and Tolfenamic Acid in Experimental Endotoxemic Awassi Sheep.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetic alterations of flunixin and tolfenamic acid in experimental endotoxemic sheep. METHODS: The study was conducted on 12 healthy Awassi sheep. The sheep were divided into two equal groups, tolfenamic acid (n = 6) and flunixin (n = 6), and the study in each group was carried out in two stages. The initial stage involved the intravenous (IV) administration of flunixin and tolfenamic acid to healthy sheep at doses of 2.2 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg, respectively. In the second stage, sheep were administered LPS (E. coli O55:B5, 10 µg…
