Prosthetic reconstruction after wide resection of tumors of the proximal humerus presents a unique challenge. The shoulder is a complex articulation, and patients have high expectations for postoperative function. The goal of this study is to compare functional outcomes, oncologic outcomes, and complication rates for 2 reconstructive methods. Forty patients with proximal humeral tumors were reviewed retrospectively. Proximal humeral endoprosthesis (PHE) was used for 21 patients, and reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) was used for 19 patients. Clinical results, oncologic outcomes, and complica

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the bone union process after arthroscopic bony Bankart repair (ABBR) in shoulders with a subcritical glenoid defect of 13.5% or larger.
METHODS: Bone union process after ABBR performed from 2011 to 2018 were retrospectively investigated in 47 athletes younger than 30 years with a subcritical glenoid defect, who underwent CT at least twice postoperatively. The change of bone union between first CT within 6 months and final CT later than 6 months was investigated, especially noticing bone fragment size (≥7.5% versus <7.5%).

Background and purpose - Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is used for treating cuff arthropathy, displaced proximal humeral fractures (PHF), and in revision shoulder surgery, despite sparse evidence on long-term results. We assessed stability of the glenoid component in reverse TSA, using model-based RSA.Patients and methods - 20 patients (mean age 76 years, 17 female), operated on with reverse TSA at Oslo University Hospital, in 2015-2017 were included. Indications for surgeries were PHFs, malunion, cuff arthropathy, and chronic shoulder dislocation. RSA markers were placed in the sc

BACKGROUND: Glenoid morphology and dysplasia have been extensively described in conjunction with shoulder arthritis. Dysplastic glenoids have a substantial inherent retroversion, a deficient posteroinferior rim, a short scapular neck, and an inferior inclination of the joint surface. The effect of dysplasia on fracture surgery has not been reported to the same extent.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man presented with a proximal humeral fracture. The patient was scheduled for osteosynthesis. The head was deemed unrepairable at the time of surgery and the operative plan changed to replace the

The purpose of this article is to review the key imaging findings in major categories of pathology affecting the shoulder joint including hydroxyapatite deposition disease, rotator cuff interval pathology, acromioclavicular joint pathology, glenohumeral osteoarthrosis, and synovial inflammatory processes, with specific emphasis on findings that have associated pitfalls in imaging diagnosis. The pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of the above mentioned categories of pathology will be reviewed, followed in each section by a detailed pictorial review of the key imaging findings in each c

Sixty-five patients underwent magnetic resonance (MR) shoulder arthrography. Forty-eight of these patients underwent examination under anesthesia (EUA). MR images were retrospectively evaluated for signs felt to be imaging indicators of shoulder instability, including evaluation of various capsular measurements and the presence of glenoid labral tears, as well as Hill-Sachs fractures. Statistical analysis of the results showed that no correlation between capsular indicators with EUA-documented instability was found. However, there was a statistically significant correlation between the presenc

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: We present an anterograde nailing system for humeral shaft fractures: the long Telegraph(R) nail. This nail enables static or dynamic anteroposterior distal locking and is easy to insert with the special aiming device.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study concerned 148 patients who underwent surgery between September 1998 and February 2005, 86 women, men age 68 years and 62 men, mean age 53 years. After excluding patients lost to follow-up and pathological fractures, we analyzed 104 files to determine the rate of nonunion as a function of distal locking or not and dynamic ver

BACKGROUND: An association between coracoid fracture and glenohumeral instability with both a seizure disorder and the subsequent development of coracoid nonunion has not previously been recognized. This is clinically important as patients with a seizure disorder and glenohumeral instability frequently require a primary osseous reconstructive procedure, such as coracoid osteotomy and transfer to the anterior glenoid rim (the Bristow-Latarjet procedure), to address glenoid osseous deficiency. We report on coracoid fracture nonunion in five patients with a seizure disorder and anterior glenohume

Bilateral anterior shoulder dislocation (BASD) is a rare condition typically associated with a history of trauma. This case report presents a patient with BASD resulting from trauma and discusses treatment options. A 51-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency department following a fall from a height. Radiographic examination revealed BASD and a comminuted intra-articular fracture of the distal end of the left radius. The patient did not have any other additional pathologies. After a preoperative evaluation, the patient was urgently taken to the operating room, where both shoulders

Background This study aimed to rationalize the surgical instrument trays (SITs) used in some trauma and orthopedic (T&O) procedures to reduce unnecessary costs. Methods SITs for several T&O procedures at our trust were assessed to judge the utility of each instrument. SITs for hip, knee, and shoulder arthroscopy, dynamic hip screw (DHS), rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilization, total shoulder arthroplasty (TSR), and proximal humerus fracture fixation were reviewed. Infrequently used and irrelevant instruments were removed to minimize the number of used trays for each procedure. A qualitati

BACKGROUND: Several modifications to the original Grammont reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) design have been proposed to prevent distinctive issues, such as both glenoid and humeral lateralization. The aim of this systematic review was to determine rates of problems, complications, reoperations, and revisions after onlay lateralized humeral stem RSA, hypothesizing that these are design related.
METHODS: This systematic review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA statement guidelines. A literature search was conducted (1 January 2000 to 14 April 2020) using PubMed, Cochrane Reviews,

Of 161 patients with 162 shoulders operated on during a thirty-year period (1946 to 1976), 124 were re-examined and twenty-one answered a questionnaire. The lesions found at surgery were separation of the capsule from the anterior glenoid rim in 85 per cent, a Hill-Sachs lesion of the humeral head in 77 per cent, and damage to the anterior glenoid rim (including fracture) in 73 per cent. There were five recurrences (3.5 per cent) after repair by the method described in the 145 shoulders that were followed. Only one of the forty-six patients with dislocation on the dominant side and one of the

Although solitary plasmacytomas may occasionally present as collar bone swellings or fractures, multiple myeloma involving clavicle is extremely rare. Ten to forty per cent of multiple myeloma cases are asymptomatic and are incidental diagnoses. Our case report describes an entirely benign presentation like chronic shoulder pain masquerading advanced myeloma, thereby posing a significant diagnostic dilemma. We present a 48-year-old man who presented with chronic bilateral shoulder pain with no history of trauma and was eventually diagnosed with advanced multiple myeloma and pathologic fracture

BACKGROUND: The use of operative treatment for clavicular fractures is increasing, despite varying results in previous studies. The aim of this study was to compare plate fixation and nonoperative treatment for displaced midshaft clavicular fractures with respect to nonunion, adverse events, and shoulder function.
METHODS: In this multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial, patients between 18 and 60 years old with a displaced midshaft clavicular fracture were randomized between nonoperative treatment and open reduction with internal plate fixation. The primary outcome was evidence
