Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a severe incurable disease of the nervous system. Currently only methods of palliative care for the patients with this disease are available. Few medications for the pathogenetic therapy are registered in some countries, i.e. riluzole, edaravon, sodium phenylbutyrate/taurursodiol as well as tofersen (conditionally). A novel short-chain alcohol dehydrogenase from Tarenaya hassleriana labeled as putative tropinone reductase was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli. Purified recombinant protein had molecular weight of approximately 30 kDa on 12% sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. BACKGROUND: The German S1 guidelines from 2009 contain a variety of recommendations for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report the results of our diagnostic procedures and treatment of 32 international patients in autumn 2010 in northern Afghanistan.
RESULTS: Giemsa stain confirmed the clinical diagnosis within 24 hours. Eleven simple lesions and one larger ulcer responded well to cryotherapy and intralesional sodium stibogluconate. More complex lesions in 19 patients responded well to oral miltefosine. One patient refused outpatient therapy.

The effects of mercuric chloride and methyl mercuric chloride on the motility of human spermatozoa in vitro were investigated. Organic as well as inorganic mercury compounds decreased the percentage of motile spermatozoa. After 15 min. incubation with 40 microM mercuric chloride a significant decrease in sperm motility was observed. Less than 5% of spermatozoa were motile after 30 min. of exposure to 20 microM methyl mercuric chloride. These effects could not be attenuated by addition of 5 microM sodium selenite. alpha-(2-Thienylidene)-gamma-aryl-delta beta,gamma-butenolides 1 are prepared by condensing thiophene-2-aldehyde with beta-aroylpropionic acids in sodium acetate-acetic anhydride mixture. The butenolides react with ammonia in ethanol to give the corresponding 5-oxo-2-pyrrolines 2. Hydrazine hydrate reacts with the butenolides 1 with the formation of the corresponding acrylic acid hydrazides 3. Ring closure of the latter hydrazides with hydrochloric/acetic acid mixture gives the pyridazinones 4. The biological activity of the synthesized compounds is tested against bacterial and yeast strains.
